  1. Well, I think the answer to the original question is shown by the fact that UI isn't even mentioned in most of the replies. I think they (UI) confuse rival with teams you hate. As for football, I'm kind of like the OP - I don't really follow any team closely. I try to watch IU football if I'm not busy, but 40 years of striving for mediocrity hasn't encouraged me to be invested in the program. If the administration and A.D. would finally get serious about the actual building of a competitive team (and not just on facilities), i.e. do whatever it takes to lure a proven big time coaching staff, I might finally be seriously excited. If Northwestern can do it, there's no reason IU can't.
  2. Yep. It really does seem smoky as hell. And that is a good thing.
  3. Wow. Meyer giving us the nod? This means one of two things: 1) We're truly on the verge of getting a couple of blockbuster commits, or 2) Jerry is so concerned that he's trying to jinx us. Either way things are looking up!
  4. No, I don't support such an action. However if there is any type of future NCAA violation (from the most incidental to severe), I suggest absolutely NO cooperation or information to the NCAA. That's not to say no action should be take - the university should take appropriate actions and/or penalties but simply describe it as "done to prevent the appearance of impropriety". No need to suffer greater punishment than other schools that have no integrity (I'm looking toward Chapel Hill) are subject to.
  5. I agree 100%. Beyond the athletic department, I doubt the administration or trustees at UL were aware of and definitely not supportive of those activities. On the other hand, it certainly appears that the higher ups at UNC are completely fine with providing academically questionable courses. One might think a conscientious president of a university would self-impose penalties or at least a public rebuke of what was going on. Yet, it's just go Heels, we're innocent and great! Disgusting, IMO.
  6. We should designate HH as "Indiana Basketball History 101" and award credits to any athletes, students, or future students in attendance. (Not an original thought - paraphrased from something read elsewhere).
  7. I wonder if this will shift the general attitude from UK being the biggest cheating program to UNC? Worse yet, does it even matter?
  8. Rule #1 going forward: 1. Never, Never, NEVER ever self-report or cooperate in any way with to/with the NCAA. In fact, if they conduct an investigation threaten to appeal and take it to court preemptively and that will kill the inquiry.
  9. It seems like it will be a "day of reckoning" whenever the NCAA gets off the pot. Either a historically successful program gets an appropriate penalty for significantly breaking the rules, or once and for all the NCAA will confirm their refusal to enforce those same rules. The delay (reluctance) to release the findings seems to be a sign that there's some real sphincter spasms going on at NCAA headquarters.
  10. With the current embarrassment of corrupt recruiting in the news, it wouldn't seem to be a good climate for issuing a weak punishment. But hey, it's the NCAA, they'll likely find a way!
  11. What about Keds? Chuck Marlowe used to play "Kedso the Clown" a long, long time ago.
  12. I was reading a bit on RR yesterday and the UK fans are pounding their chests about being above board. Now, I understand this is typical fan behavior but some of their reasoning is laughable. My favorite is that only the other schools have to cheat (presumably out of desperation) trying to keep up with Cal's prowess. Wow.
  13. One aspect about improper benefits is this: the top players know who's getting money and where it's coming from. My memory is failing me but I remember an interview (likely Mark Montieth) with a former IU player from the glory years talking about players from other teams asking him "how much did you get?" and them not believing him when he said nothing. In those years coaches and boosters gave out the sugar and it evolved into shoe companies and sports agents.
  14. Hmmmmm. Now this could grow legs.
  15. I guess one thing I'm not certain of is what info beyond evidence for prosecution would the NCAA be privy to? Would (will) the feds provide incidental info that pertains to NCAA violation? I'd love for as much investigation and information be shared so that as many cheaters as possible can be punished. From reading around the internet, it seems some think that the FBI is going to delve deep into NCAA violations and I'm not sure that is the case.
  16. I think one thing to bear in mind is that the FBI is concerned with investigating federal criminal activity (obviously). They probably aren't concerned with simply stopping recruiting corruption. Any additional info that comes from their investigation and prosecution will need to be addressed by the NCAA.
  17. I'm not so sure Tom Crean would accept that job. It would be priceless to see him turn them down.
  18. Fred might want to check on Georgia Southern's availability that day. UL basketball might be swinging from a rope by then.
  19. Man, I have to feel our chances with Romeo have to be really good now. Logically, we should be an odds on favorite - if it was a two-way battle between us and UL, I don't see how another school immediately steps into it with the same odds. Of course, it's never over until it's over and things can change, but you gotta feel cautiously optimistic.
  20. If the FBI uncovers records of payments to players, and these are substantial sums of money, won't those players be in jeopardy of being charged with tax evasion (or at least failure to report income)?
  21. I'd imagine there'll be a lot of singing 'canaries' and soon.
  22. Indeed. I think we've all felt suspicious about NCAA basketball for a while. Those that have been skirting the rules need to be ferreted out and punished - no matter who they are or what school they're associated with.
