He had a chance to play for Archie Miller. I can’t blame any recruit for not jumping on that chance. Now he has the chance to play for Mike Woodson. Kids commit to the coach more than anything.
-
The portal isn’t just a one way street. Loyalty from players is going to be less than it has been in the past because if they’re not playing much they can transfer to another school and play immediately. That’s going to impact coaches’ decisions moving forward. Galloway is ok with his position right now, but will he still be ok with it after a year of riding the bench? Will he be ok with Coach Woodson bringing in more guys who will play over him? You never know. It’s going to be harder to count on guys being ok with not playing much in years 1 and 2 and then hopefully contributing in years 3 and 4 when they can leave and play immediately. So, give a year or two of Brooks every time. We know he can contribute right now.
-
I strongly disagree that Brooks is only a “slightly better player” than Trey Galloway. Anyway, I don’t see the two as mutually exclusive. You build a good culture but you’re still looking to maximize your talent. No one is irreplaceable and the players know that. Plus, Keion Brooks is very good friends with our best player. The culture would be fine.
-
And this past season he outscored and out rebounded our returning 4 in fewer minutes per game. Woody has a great personality. You don’t get praise from so many former players of his without one. He’s the opposite of Crean in that department. Do you legitimately believe that forcing out an Indiana kid he never recruited would keep top Indiana talent away from IU if we’re consistently top 4 or 5 in the conference?
-
Calipari recruits Indiana and hasn’t struggled to pull top talent out of the state despite pushing players out. We see it differently and that’s fine. If we get Brooks then awesome. If not, I’m happy with the team that we have. We’ll see what happens.
-
I’m sorry, but the whole “burning bridges by making coaches mad” thing is overblown. Do you think John Calipari worries about ‘burning bridges’? He pushes out 5 stars and reloads every year. Do you think Coach K worries about burning bridges? Say Keion comes in next year and helps IU win a Big Ten title or make a tournament run. Do you really think the good that would do to recruiting would be outweighed by the bad from making one coach mad? Because I certainly don’t. Big 10 basketball is the big time. You always need to be looking for ways to improve your roster or else you’re going to get passed up by other teams. Especially now that the transfer portal is going to be permanent.

His dad coaches at Culver Academy. Other than Trey, how many guys have we gotten from there? None come to mind. Woody came in and landed a top 25 guard from IMG Academy in a matter of weeks. I don’t think he’s worried about a bad relationship with one Indiana high school coach dooming his recruiting. With his NBA resume, if he succeeds here he will have elite players fighting over spots. Besides, this is different from recruiting a player and then pushing him out. Woody never recruited Trey. We want to be a blue blood, well that’s how blue bloods operate. John Calipari has run off players far better than Trey Galloway and he’s recruiting just fine. I’m not even saying that I hope Trey gets pushed out. But if the chance to get Keion is there, and Trey is the cost, it’s a no brainer. We’re a top 25 team and a legit conference contender next year if that happened. That’d be a helluva outcome after where we were a month ago.
-
Nope. Who is it?
-
I just don’t really see it. No offense to Trey, but players like him are a dime a dozen. We can land players who have those same intangibles but also have more talent. He was a 3 star recruit ranked outside the top 150. If things go well for him then he could play that role as a senior, but he doesn’t have the shooting or the raw athleticism that some guys who outplay their rankings have. Woody wants to win now, and with his age his shelf life at IU is about a decade more or less. Does he want to wait around and see if Galloway develops, or does he want to get as much talent as he can right now? When you’re a new coach coming in with the portal, your first worry is crap are all these guys going to leave? Now that that’s obviously not a problem, he can be picky. I think he’d take Brooks over Galloway in a heartbeat. They’re both Indiana kids, and one is a lot better than the other.
-
I think we need to be realistic about Galloway’s trajectory, too. He’s a 6’4 wing who can’t shoot and doesn’t have great athleticism. He shot 31% from 3 and 63% from the free throw line in high school. As a senior, he shot 23% from 3 and 58% from the line. His free throw and three point percentages got worse as he progressed through high school. I know some see him as a potential Will Sheehey type, but Sheehey was 6’7, pretty athletic, and a serviceable shooter. Sheehey also struggled as a senior when he was no longer surrounded by elite talent. Woodson isn’t going to keep a kid around just because he’s from Indiana if he doesn’t think he’ll help the team.
-
What about Brooks makes you think he’s a head case?
-
Because at the end of the day Coach Woodson is trying to get IU back to national prominence and we need high-level players to do that. Keion hasn’t lived up to his rankings but the staff must see something there (assuming these rumors are true). I completely see where you’re coming from man. If I’m being honest, I wasn’t a fan of it when I first heard the rumors either. Keion’s recruitment left a bad taste in my mouth. He had his chance to come here and he scorned us for UK instead. But at the end of the day, coaches aren’t going to see it the same way that fans do. None of our coaches were even here when IU was recruiting Keion. I’m still skeptical that he’ll be at IU, but if he is I think he will help us win games.
-
They were 6-10 in the 16 games that he played, for whatever that’s worth. He had a 23/11 game against Tennessee. He shot 80% from the line last year. He’s athletic. Look at the poster he puts this Vanderbilt player on at 1:20. I don’t know how much he would play next season here, but it would be more than Galloway would play. Keion’s only a grade ahead too, so theoretically he’d still have 3 more years of eligibility.
-
I mean, he played 24 mpg and averaged 10 points and 7 rebounds a game last year. While dealing with injuries. He hasn’t lived up to his top 25 ranking, but he’s a better player than Galloway is. (If that’s who we’d be choosing between).
-
Kinda how I feel, to be honest. I don’t really like it, but at the end of the day your goal is to put the best team you can on the court. You upgrade if you can.
-
Oh wow, for real? Absolutely horrible. It unfortunately looks like the Clarke news is true but I hadn’t seen anything about Boston.
-
I’d hate to lose someone who wants to be a Hoosier like Trey. I’ll always like kids who choose to come here and don’t waver in their commitment. With that said, we need talent infusions to compete at the level we want IU to play at. We haven’t had that in recent years. Talent wise, Keion is definitely an upgrade. Trey is a poor shooter. He was a 3 star recruit, #157 in his class. Not really the level of recruit we want to be bringing in. So, I’m conflicted. Might as well wait to see if it happens before deciding how I feel.

Reports that Terrence Clarke from UK died in a car accident today... Just terrible. Hope the reports are wrong.
-
Are these potential losses guys who did not enter the portal ?
-
*searches through your posts to see who your favorite player is* lol
-
Honestly kind of tired of the Keion Brooks rumors (not from people on here or anything, just in general). He's had over a month to decide to enter the transfer portal and he hasn't so far. We had several spots open. He easily could've decided to take one, but he didn't. Now we're full. A 6'7 tweener who can't shoot isn't really what this team needs, anyway.
-
It’s not hard to improve when you go 2-16 in the conference your first year. He’s 14-40 in the SEC the past three years. I know it’s Crean’s style to not count the first three years of his tenure at schools, but that’s really bad.

7 person signing class in 2019... That's the Tom Crean I know.

Mike Woodson and His Coaching Staff

I for one am so relieved that Gregg Doyel approves of our assistant hire.
