One thing that I’ve noticed and that has me kind of excited is that it seems like almost everyone we’ve brought in is a good to very good passer. It will be fun to see how our offense flows next season if Devries can bring it all together.

Transfer Portal w IU Interest

To be fair, Rice did that all the time too and it’s something Woodson should have nipped early in the season. IMO a better coach (hopefully Devries if he returns) wouldn’t let him take that shot. -

Also how much more playing time do we have to offer? I could be wrong but I would expect a guy like Freeman is aiming to be a featured starter somewhere. -

A recruiting victory over Kentucky in the first month of the job is a HUGE win for Devries! LETS GOOOOO things are looking up now -

Man I don’t get all the hate for this guy wanting to get paid. He pretty much has one year to lock in some serious earnings in his life so you have to take advantage. Besides, there is no reason a guy who wants to maximize his earnings can’t also work his a$$ off. Last year we had a bad culture that led to sub par attitudes and underperformance and that was on Woodson. This year it’s on Devries to make sure we’re getting guys who actually play hard all season. -

We hearing this anywhere else yet? -
Touched on this a bit in the other thread but where do we slot this guy? Doesn’t seem like he is a perfect fit as a 5 defensively though I love what his offense brings to the table.

So…. Does anyone have an idea on who we’re actually pursuing at this point? Seems that Flory is still on the board but likely leaning to Auburn? -

Darian DeVries - New IUBB Head Coach
Hoosier Roots replied to iubb's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I’m all for IUBB becoming a force in regional HS ball again and I hope in coming years we will be a presence at these events. Right now the focus has to be on building the program and putting a roster and coaching staff together. Going to the state game would just be showing face when we have nothing else in order. -
Darian DeVries - New IUBB Head Coach

Unless we think there is a significant contributor for next year’s roster in one of those games, that’s not a good use of his time now imo. He isn’t a politician. Let’s not demand public appearances from the guy when we don’t even have a team yet for next year. -
If this coaching search is at the point that is rumored and we’re looking at either Brownell or a Ben McCollum that is leaning towards Iowa, Scott needs to at least start kicking the tires on Wade. The dude can flat out coach and would be a top option to win immediately here. The problems with the NCAA are moot, and in my opinion he just happened to be the guy who got hammered for something that every other successful program was doing. His problems aren’t even in the same jurisdiction as someone like Beard. If we’re serious about winning and bringing the program back to prominence, Wade is an obvious candidate. The guy would likely kill it here and is rumored to be very interested in the job.

Think we see a program that doesn’t try to compete on talent but instead goes for something similar to the Bo Ryan model where you have very disciplined players that know their defined role in a broader system, maybe with a few special talents sprinkled in depending on the year. Just like Drake, i believe it will be more teams that are greater than just the sum if their parts. I dont know if it would work at IU but I think it will at Iowa.

Wade to NC State. Would be surprised if he doesn’t have that program at a consistent level of success.

Believe this is going to be an absolute problem for the B1G, if not by next year then definitely in 3 or 4 years. Curious to see how much recruiting overlap we end up with due to the shared Iowa roots. Hopefully ole D squared kills it so much here that we won’t even remember that McCollum was a serious candidate for IU.

I definitely wouldn’t be in destitute over a devries hire, but if we’re taking an Iowa guy I think I’d rather have BM. The thing that sticks out with McCollum over all the other guys in his “tier” is that he didn’t just build a good winning program, he built something that was absolutely dominant. I don’t think you can completely discount that just being due to the level of competition. I think we all want to be back to that level and id rather take someone who already knows how to build a dominant program over someone who is still figuring out how to build a great one. -

The demand that the coach also has to be a salesman/ politician/ CEO is ridiculous and harms the program imo. let’s get a guy that’s a terrific basketball coach and let him focus on just that. -

There’s still time to bully the administration into hiring Wade… -

I just cant see BB being the end result of this coaching search. First, the political capital spent to force out a former star player held in high regard by the university had to have been massive. There’s no way we do that to hire someone who is not a clear upgrade what so ever. Second, the fan reaction is going to be awful. All the air is going to be sucked out of the program before he would even get on campus. We would be back to paying millions to have above average teams at best, if the NIL is even still there. This would be a disaster. -

Drew and Otz should make the fanbase ecstatic. McCollum at least means we’re willing to take risks to get back to an elite level. Once we get to Brownell and Collins, the upside case is tough to sell imo. -

Either the national media is totally clueless on this one or we are about to get the absolute rug pulled out from under us. Would really like to see Wade pop up in these drops. -
If the NCAA had actually maintained a level playing field it would be different but at that point it was obvious that most of the programs that were succeeding at a high level were blatantly playing by different rules and the NCAA had little interest in stopping it from happening aside from some easy targets. This issue is more about the lack in of credibility from the NCAA than breaking rules for me.

He got in trouble for paying players. That’s a ridiculous thing to hold against a guy at this point, we just had a coach who’s only success over four years can be attributed to being able to pay players. Bring him on and let him pay all the players he can.
