I think many people are getting wrapped around the turnover where Hummel mentioned lots of contact. We turned it over 13 times. I can recall 4 (TJD dribbling off his leg, TJD tossing it over Kopp's head, JHS trying to takeout the shot clock, Gallo's bad pass to Race) where we might have had pressure but there wasn't a foul. Which is easier to control - a little discipline that would cut down on the majority of your turnovers or forcing the officials to call a foul that forced a few of the turnovers? That's ballgame. TJD, for some reason, decided he was going to bring the ball down in the paint. I believe that accounted for several of his TOs and missed shots in the first half.

Outside of the obvious things (turnovers, shooting, defending) we'll need to limit our fouls in the tourney too. We've fouled at a pretty high rate all season and if we play the same way in the tourney we will make an early exit. The turnover trend will be a major factor too. The last major concern I have is with teams (like NW) that have several guards where we can't hide Kopp on defense and he's not taking and making shots on offense.

I remember hearing analysts mention how team x can't wait to get to the tourney so they're not playing conference foes. The translation there was they play a different style that is more conducive to winning than football on the hardwood. As long as the Big 1.o keeps bringing in the $$$ and coaches like Painter, Izzo, and whoever is at Wiscy has influence we'll have this type of "basketball."

Modern basketball when your AA post is getting doubled, revolutionary. Looks like we attempted that but a few things happened: - TJD dribbled it off his leg when the official brought the triple team - TJD forgot Kopp wasn't 7'6" and tossed it over his head when the official blitz from the safety position - When Kopp actually had the open look he either bricked it (it happens) or didn't take the shot (hence the low 3FGA)

Kopp is fine as long as he can defend a shooter. When they got the switch for Kopp on Buie we should have just given them two points and taken ball out to save time. I guess it was good that we only gave up twos and not threes late in the second half with that switch. It was an issue last season and has been an issue against most halfway athletic wings he's attempted to guard. He does spread the floor a bit and we don't have any other great options. Such is life with a flawed team.

Absolutely, give credit to NW for taking away our one consistent offensive weapon with a quick double. We responded by tossing it all over the gym, taking bad shots, forgetting we actually had to rebound, and giving up some really good looks or allowing them to get to the rim. Crazy stat - NW had 19 rebounds at the half and only 6 in the second. The players and coaches getting all those turds out at halftime (some call them halftime adjustments) seemed to payoff as we FINALLY got TJD moving in the second half. It's almost like this is the first time we've faced this all season.

I actually believe the officiating does play a role in the natty drought in an indirect way. If you're an extremely talented player are you looking to play in a more free flowing game that's played in much of the ACC, SEC, and PAC12 or are you looking to through on the pads in the Big 1.o? Location, cash, and other factors play into it.

There is a lot that goes into winning outside of effort like talent, coaching, experience, etc.; however, you play the percentages. Teams who play smart and with effort will increase their chances of winning (i.e. controlling what they can control). There will be games your shots don't fall and the opponents will. You can increase the odds your shot will fall by taking good open shots and making good passes to those open players (not tossing it all over the gym). You decrease your opponents chances of making shots by being in the same zip code when they take them and by playing team defense when your wing gets switched onto a guard that is going to score on him every time. We didn't do those things in the first half or in crunch time therefore we lost.

No, it wasn't just about effort but it played a part as well as concentration. I know it's easy to blame the refs for all our TOs, missed FTs, awful shots (Tamar says hi), and lack of defense. We played with some good effort in the second half but lacked concentration during stretches too. (we're still waiting for JHS pass to come back to earth along with wherever Gallo was tossing his pass to).

You're right, the team gave full effort in that first half. Every NW shot was a circus shot they just got lucky and they just absolutely mauled us the entire first half without us getting a call. They brought out that big fan that effected our FTs. Couldn't believe when they brought their managers on the court to help defend us too! Wicked crazy to see them defend so well. That football player coming out of the stands to tackle TJD was sick! Amazing we got called for a foul every time we got within 5' of them. We haven't fouled all season and this game was exactly the opposite! We you play with the effort and concentration we did in the first half on the road in the Big 1.o you leave it up to others to decide the game. We didn't control what we could control in the first half.

Our bad play in the first half was pretty constant yea? Just like the first game against NW if we play a full 40 with effort and concentration we win, probably rather easily. I get it these are young people but when you play a full 38 minutes like we did in the first game and a full half like we did in this game you're not controlling what you can control. I guess I'm picking and choosing similar to the team with their effort and concentration?
