Entertaining game. Both teams defend hard. Didn’t see anything offensively that gets me real jazzed about either guy. Ball screen, drive and kick. Same thing every other coach runs.

    Candidate Thread: Thad Matta

Bro... you coach college ball and don’t know how good Matta is? Also, look around. Game hasn’t changed except maybe for the worse Xs and Os wise. Guys from the 80s and 90s still dominating: Izzo, Pitino, K, Williams, Few, Tony Bennett running stuff his dad came up with in the 80s, etc... Cmon man...

Yep. And I hate to talk ill of the man, but Stevens isn’t above failure either. He’s never recruited the high major, 1-and-done scene. For example, had Archie gotten a all-big level 4yr starter at guard instead of Romeo, he’s probably still the coach today. Stevens got pretty lucky with the Howard and Hayward recruitments. And Stevens at the pro level has had his problems with the exact type of 1-and-done talent (eg. kyrie, tatum, jb) he’d have to navigate at IU. All candidates have risks. You hire the best you can.

Lol... I can remember when he was the hot young coach and all the message board arguments about firing Davis early to get Matta.
  5. .675 at TT. .550 in conf. Not bad, but not as impressive when you back the minor leagues out. For comparison Matta was like .733/.655 at OSU.
  6. Can’t wait for the winner of this game to be named the definite knee-jerk reaction best available IU coaching candidate. Loser is worse than Moser!

    Candidate Thread: Thad Matta

People are worried about Mattas health and want a 75 yr old man run out of his last job for making racially insensitive comments? I’d love to hear the rationale on that one.

    Candidate Thread: Thad Matta

We’re not going to know that. Only Matta knows. And dolsons job to vet. We wouldn’t even offer if both weren’t convinced 100%. So if he’s hired feel confident they both are convinced he’s healthy. speculation otherwise is pointless.

Agree. Absolute home-run if we’re getting the same guy that was at osu. Homerun.

This guy is a fool and trolling IU fans for attention. Not sure why some are intent on giving it to him.

Most National media guys are basketball idiots and few have sources. They’re probably reading this board and regurgitating stuff.

He’s 1b to Stevens 1a IF healthy. In fact his floor is higher than Stevens by virtue of actually having navigated major div recruiting before. And he managed it well! I think Stevens ceiling is higher which is why he was the golden child.
  13. Depends on how much he values history, recruiting upside, etc.... If UT offered Tom Allen $10 mil per to coach football don’t you think he’d at least think about it?

    Candidate Thread: Porter Moser

You say that now. But when Matta, musselman and fife publicly turn us down you’ll be building the moser shrine in front of assembly hall.

Great leader of men. Gotta think if his xs and os were better they’d never have been stuck in Egypt in the first place!

    Candidate Thread: Mike Woodson

No... we’re talking about if he’s a respected basketball coach by some of the best coaches in the world. He is. Nobody is seriously considering a 63yr old with no college experience for the IU job. You can separate the two things. Just like some don’t want him here, most of the candidates IU has left couldn’t get an interview for most of the jobs Woodson has had.

I agree with that. His sets look good. Very beilien-ish. Big, big step up to a job like iu tho. That’s why ADs get the big bucks and front row seats. Just going off resume, I’d choose musselman over Moses if forced to. Going off the eye test, I’d probably go Moses. I like their offensive movement.

Musselman was run out of the NBA. Not a deal killer but something to look into. And he has one 20 win season in a P5 conf. His record at Nevada is nice, but its MM success. Alford was .750 at New Mexico. Shaka .740 at VCU. So on and so forth. Not a bad candidate, but it’s essentially betting on a MM darling again.

    Candidate Thread: Mike Woodson

Do you know how ridiculous this sounds? Take a second and go look at the coaches who have hired him—paid him good money for his coaching services—in the NBA. Multiple championship coaches and several known as top Xs and Os guys have thought Wodson was a good addition to their staff. Unless you’re anonymously Greg Popovich secretly posting here, Ima have a hard time taking your assessment here seriously. (And even though I’m defending an iu guy on an iu board, I still feel compelled to say, he’s not my ideal candidate either.)

Recruiting is the obvious question mark. Hard to believe he wouldn’t recruit the heck out of the Indy area. But any coach who can’t recruit is dead in the water in college.
  21. If Alabama took that approach they never would’ve gotten Saban. He waffled a lot. Reportedly, the AL AD flew down there and held Saban and his agents hand as they called Miami ownership and then immediately flew Saban back to Tuscalussa before he could change his mind.

He took over two awful franchises and had higher winning percentages than the guy before and after. Look at the coaches who hired him as an assistant. Some of the best coaches in the NBA continually hire him as part of their staff. His resume craps on guys like Smart and Mussleman. In the NBA you don’t get to choose your players. Stevens will likely be under .500 this year and it’s due to roster. Woodson has taken over crappy rosters and coached them up as well as anyone. It is why hes respected around the league. At 63 and not having coached in college, I don’t particularly want him either. But people crapping on his resume or coaching chops don’t know what they are talking about. It’s fine if you don’t want him as coach, but what’s with hating on an alum who is well respected in NBA coaching circles?
  23. Like Archie and Alford he’s a good mid major coach. Not good enough for prime time. His pressing system was never going to work there, but credit him for abandoning it. That offense is a mess without turnover created transition tho (the case for most pressing coaches).
  24. He’s been offered big time jobs up and down the west coast including UCLA. I don’t think he’s ever really entertained them. He just loves Gonzaga. They are lucky.
  25. Stevens goes before Ainge. Easily. But he can get another coaching job easy, too. Rest of your theory sounds plausible.
