IUBB vs Tennessee Tech - 11/25/20 @ 8:00 ET on BTN
ray replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I hear people praising Lander, but Phinisee outplayed Lander tonight. I’m not suggesting Lander didn’t impress me, especially considering his youth (although, Galloway impressed me the most of the freshman by a rather large margin...just everything about how he moved without the ball and was constantly hustling), but statistically Phinisee was the better point guard (tonight). That could change. One game isn’t enough to suggest much. Phinisee 24 mins 12 pts 5-8 (2-3 3pt) 5 rebs 2 ast 0 TO + 28 Lander 14 mins 5 pts 2-5 (1-4 3 pt) 0 rebs 2 ast 0 TO +14 Both played well and under control. Durham had 2 TOs but led the way in +/- at +30, followed closely by TJD with +29 and Phinisee +28. (Not that I put a lot of weight on the whole +/-, especially considering Galloway made zero mistakes but due to 3 fouls he ended with only +5). Durham’s line would have been great if it wasn’t for poor 3-pt % which was below his typical night, and the two TOs. 28 mins 9 pts 4-9 (1-5 3pt) 6 rebs 4 ast 1 steal Phinisee and Durham had 11 rebs at the guard spot. Considering IU struggled on the boards tonight far more than expected, it was good to see this. The two veteran guards out rebounded the entire rest of the team combined 11-10 (Franklin, Lander, Leal, Geronimo, Galloway, Hunter, and Thompson) with the exception of TJD who had 11 himself and was true to form. It will be interesting to see how the roster and PT breaks down, but IU will have to be better on the boards, hit FTs and shoot better from the perimeter. I was very impressed with TJD (as we should expect) and all the freshman (most notably Galloway who seemed to make no errors and looked much more experienced than a freshman typically does on his first night). Hunter will make his way, I hope. Leal will hit those shots, I hope...as will Durham. Lander looks under control. We’ll see him come into his own, I’m sure. Race needs to be back to beast mode on the boards because Brunk will play more if he can’t. Let’s hope the coach and three players on TT didn’t spread the virus to other TT players before this game. -

As much as I would like to watch some Hoosiers on the hardwood, I don't know if I can agree that a game against Tennessee Tech is worth the risk knowing their coach has tested positive. Yes, I know, I'll hear many of you tell me how safe it is to have an opposing team with players potentially in an incubation period breathing heavily on IU's roster because they'll all be tested again...or that with my fearful approach we wouldn't have any games to watch...but my point isn't to live in fear but to lean on the side of caution. It's very different to be working in an office where everyone is wearing a mask and physically distanced than it is to be breathing heavily and sweating while leaning against others for 40 minutes. There is potentially much more risk to play against a team where the head coach just tested positive than there is playing against a team where everyone has tested negative. There will be risks in any game, regardless of positive or negative results, just as there are risks going to the grocery store. However, I need to eat...whereas a game scheduled against a team projected to finish 9th within its rather weak, twelve-team athletic conference isn't as dire. I would rather see them play in Maui and the Big Ten/ACC Challenge where they have a shot at winning some games of notable impact. Yes, the rust would be nice to have shaken off prior to those games, but at what risk level should this be considered necessary? There is the possibility at least one IU player could test positive prior to Maui regardless, and I'm well aware of that, but it would sure suck to learn that one or more players tested positive after tomorrow night's game and would be quarantined and forced to be sidelined (or worse, the entire team is told it cannot participate in that tournament and in that challenge). I know anyone could have it and be pre-symptomatic, and therefore any game is a risk...but knowing the head coach who surrounds himself with the players (and other coaches and staff) on the court, in the locker room, in the AV room, in the meeting rooms, etc has tested positive should raise some flag (not necessarily red and not necessarily white). I just hope the physicians, players, coaches, and staff are in agreement with playing...as I suspect and can only imagine they are. If so, then I will watch because like any other year it's been a long off-season and I'm excited. I considered not posting at all because I know there are still those among us who continue to believe this virus is "fake news", but...oh well, I'm posting it anyways. I hope they play the game, all goes well, and nothing more comes of this. Although, I will be honest and admit I still worry about what sort of early (and potentially drastic) impact it may bring to this season for Indiana. End of rant. Go Hoosiers! -

(2021) - PF Mason Miller to Creighton
ray replied to ap2345's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Miller to Creighton Blue Jays and Mohammed (although in Springfield and not technically St Louis) to Indiana? And if so, then will Hoosier Hysteria not only give us a glimpse of the current players but also an announcement from a certain recruit...or are you merely saying you prefer Mohammed over Miller? -
(2021) - PF Mason Miller to Creighton
ray replied to ap2345's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Mason Miller just returned from a visit to Creighton. I don't have paid membership on the site to read his comments about his visit, nor do I wish to fork over the money. Has anyone heard how his visit went and whether or not he intends to make a trip to Bloomington anytime soon? I know he said Indiana, Creighton, and Ohio State are his top three and he's still considering Memphis and Florida. Any news with this recruitment from anyone? -
(2022) PF Jalen Washington to UNC

Business is his college major of interest. Stanford is interested in him, which is often considered the number one business school. The next best business school on his list of current suitors is probably Indiana (typically ranked in the top 25). Proximity to home and playing on a bigger stage could play a part. Growing up just outside Chicago, Northwestern is a fantastic business school (top 3) but unlikely to have draw beyond that. And as a northern Indiana kid, Michigan could have some pull if they begin recruitment (top 10 business school, playing on a big stage for a rich basketball program with a former NBA payer as a coach). It is very likely he has his sights set on earning a paycheck on the court, though, which might diminish his need to attend a school with a top business school ranking. Just thinking aloud. -

Many of you have speculated similar reasons for his commitment to Purdue, but I think this article sums it up pretty well. I'm okay with it. Signing off on this thread for good. https://baumhoops.com/musings-why-purdue-was-always-the-choice-for-kaufman/ -

Brilliant! I often feel better after reading your posts. Laughter is good for the soul. Thanks again for the free therapy. It’s always appreciated. One last thing, do you have any predictions for which NBA team selects him? Perhaps the Timberwolves? -

Virginia fans are worrying about his commitment tweet which apparently had a background song about Air Jordans by some artist named Macklemore (I'm not familiar). They're seemingly convinced they're out of the running and Trey will be enrolling at UNC based on the Jordan and Nike references. I didn't want to tell them they're wrong, which would get their hopes up, and then break their hearts again by explaining how they're wrong...so, I didn't write a post (actually, in truth, I just didn't want to go through the process of creating an account for a Virginia board I'll never post on again). -

If you can stomach anyone talking about UNC, here’s a video discussion of their top targets. Skip to the 11 minute mark to hear them discuss Kaufman and wait for it. He mentions UNC has done everything including offering Kaufman a car. Ha! He immediately said he didn’t mean it literally, but he said it. To be clear, nothing much mentioned than what we all already know...he’s a great kid on and off the court, he’s tight-lipped and there’s no circus around his recruitment, and that they believe it’s down to UNC, UV, and IU. https://www.tarheeltimes.com/article119629.aspx -

And Watford is listed on the 2nd team. I would love to see TJD play well enough to be Big Ten's Player of the Year, but it will take a lot considering Garza also plays in the Big Ten. I think Garza would need to trip up pretty severely or suffer an injury to fall off the perch. It's nice to read others making the claim TJD is a potential player of the year candidate though. -

https://www.insidethehall.com/2020/10/06/in-ireland-deron-davis-reaches-his-next-proving-ground/ I love what I know of his personality. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders. I'm glad he does. I'm not sure I would have stuck it out the way he has. I hope he has a blast in Ireland...such a cool place to be. -

I read this article and came to share. As usual, you've beaten us all to it...and a big thank you for always keeping people up to date and sharing. As for this young man, without even seeing his game, he appears to have an extremely high confidence level, an above-average maturity, and he seems to be an impressive caliber person with a leader's mindset. His ability to score as well as his motivation to distribute and defend is worth the effort to recruit him. He and his family also seem quite impressed with Miller and Indiana thus far. -
Coronavirus and Sports Only - PLEASE and THANK YOU
ray replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
This is one sporting event in Indiana that WILL take place, whether or not most fans are allowed to attend. Indiana’s governor will for sure be in attendance with his family, as he’s made it clear during many of his daily coronavirus updates how important this event is for his family who hasn’t missed in decades. I won’t count on any other sports in Indiana to have a full season, but I would bet on an Indianapolis 500 being raced. This doesn’t help me, though, as I hate auto racing. -

Auburn: “It was a packed crowd and loud.” - if he visits Bloomington, then I'm quite sure it will equal the capacity and volume if not exceed it Indiana: “That offer surprised me. They had a Hall of Famer in Isaiah Thomas. That’s a big basketball school." - enough said, but if Landers lives up to the hype and performs well in Archie's system, then that might help too Maryland: “The whole coaching staff played point guard, so they can help me become a better point guard.” - Archie played point guard Ohio State: “They have a lot of history." - not nearly as much basketball history as Indiana Purdue: “They really want to build a relationship. They brought three different coaches down to see me. They really put in the time to recruit me.” - if Archie wants him, then he and Roberts will put the time in to build a strong relationship too Georgia might have a leg up thus far. His parents played there, and his parents still live nearby. He mentioned how Crean plays a fast tempo he likes, which can't be argued. I'm sure he grew up watching the SEC. I'm not sure if he's a church-goer, so as far as I know that's still a non-factor. -

https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/oklahoma-state-center-yor-anei-transferring-after-cowboys-postseason-ban/ Thoughts on such a player to transfer to Bloomington? He would be eligible for two years. A big man with experience in a major conference. A great defensive player. Should Archie at least reach out to see if there's any interest? -

2022 General Recruiting Thread (Bball)
ray replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
The videos of this kid are impressive. I love seeing him aggressively attack the rim with enthusiasm and seemingly effortlessly, but I'm even more impressed by his defensive instincts when it comes to intercepting passing lanes and the timing with his shot blocking. Tae Davis is another in this class I really like, but for different reasons (most notably, his outside shooting and the fact he's a coach's son). The kid from Chicago seems a little more clumsy in his game at this point, but it could be he's still learning to control his longer body at a youthful age. I think he's the higher rated prospect at this point, but I like Davis and Bond a lot. Although, it's still very early. I'll have to look at some of the videos of other targets, as these three are the only '22 targets I've watched thus far. Thanks again for always bringing so much information to this forum. https://www.thedailyhoosier.com/iu-basketball-recruiting-class-of-2022-names-to-know-leon-bond/ By the way, Patrick Baldwin Jr is a stud. He will likely be wearing a Puke jersey though, unfornutately. -
