My biggest problem is we’re in just as bad of a spot whether Woody sucks this year or has a fine year and retires. A new coach will have zero foundation for the 2025-26 season given we’ve struck out in the 2024 recruiting class AND likely 2025. It would've been nice to have a new coach this coming season with foundational pieces (Gallo, Malik, Mgbako?) and the ability to potentially salvage the 2025 class. You can fix quickly in the portal, but all successful teams need a foundation.

This will probably not be well-received... but in my mind, we have two options: 1) mid-major coach with proven success / resume (May, Schertz, etc) 2) high-major coach who doesn't have the proven success / resume, but has the traits and qualities which would lead us to believe he could and would succeed here (Shrews, etc) Option 3 of a P5 coach with proven success will never exist unless it's a very rare circumstance. Even then, I'd bet against it. The way SEC / football schools have started investing in basketball (with facilities, NIL resources, huge salary pool for HC & assistants, etc) over the last decade or so (while still having limited fanbase pressure) makes our job more and more ordinary. You don't have to love May, Schertz, or Shrewsberry. They all come with risk. But if we're gonna sit around waiting for the perfect candidate, we're gonna be stuck in neutral for a long time.

Man, if Pearl really wanted to come here after a, say, S16 loss, it’d be nice if we could sit Woody down and say look, I know you want to leave the program in the best spot possible, and the best way to do that is retire and let this guy take over. Because he’s the best option we’re gonna have this year or next.

I love that a guy who built the FAU program from scratch and took them to a FINAL FOUR is a hard sell to the BoT, but a dude with zero CBB experience was coveted for what sounds like several years. I'd say it's unbelievable, but this level of dysfunction is sadly what I expect these days.

Good points made. I assume Bjork & O$U will make Dusty untouchable (especially by us) if they're going to bring him in. Given they should have some good options

Sigh. I think my best comp for us right now is the LA Angels. They continuously throw big bucks at players who don't fit together and always hover around .500. Always bought, never built. Forever stuck in purgatory. And people are always wondering why they're never any good.
