Yeah, he could’ve made a lot more. I agree no single athlete is bigger than the university but they can make more money for themselves if they choose to leave the country. I guess you have to travel the world to understand. Basketball is big in Asia and Europe so much so that they don’t need the universities help for branding.

What’s your age demographic 40-60? Because that’s a solid argument in the 90’s or even early 2000s. It’s different now, international leagues will pay at a minimum $50-60 grand a year for a top 100 kid to play in their league. Plus they would get endorsements from said country. If you ever go to Japan or China you’ll see a lot of commercials from basketball player’s because they love the game as much as we do. I would argue that in China people love basketball as much as people from Indiana. There’s real money to be had if they want it.

Today? I work with both UNC and Duke administrations- that might have been the case in the 90’s but definitely not now. If a highly touted kid marketed himself correctly through social media and went through a good development program (international or national) ——I think they’d make a lot more money as opposed to staying in college. We make huge bank off these kids. I don’t know what’s right or wrong but we do make a ton more money through them (ratio wise of course).

Eeeeh parameters change. Should a university capitalize on someone’s likeness way after they leave college? Universities counter that they give a athlete exposure, but now social media and advanced scouting have changed so that mode of arguing is archaic. Rules change thats how society works. Remember when coaches used to forbid you from transferring to certain schools? Some coaches were acting on bad faith, some were not. In life you have good people and bad. I don’t talk in generalities. Generalities confine us to a certain belief and make us ingrained in believing and defending that belief to the bitter end.

Ehh I disagree with this. For one, they are legal adults they should be awarded the same rights as their student peers. If other students want to transfer they can, also they’re allowed to do anything they can to earn money outside of school. For me, I took money from the IU trustees playing them in poker. Your kids are in a age frame we’re development is necessary and they need those tools to better themselves so they can reach their grossing and mental peaks. With the basketball players one could easily argue that they are in their peak grossing period of their life. (Ages 18-30). Tools like not allowing kids to transfer are used to make an institution and not the individual have more control over money.

UNC is hiring someone with UNC ties because they have a “system” and want people who will follow the “system” to win.

I just don’t like the mentality that I have to be excited for anyone the administration choose. It serves no purpose to me to be a puppet and it’s good to question power to wield better results. I like the man and I wish nothing for the best for him. The goal should be to have these kids do well in their basketball/real life and to win. They’re major risks though with this hire and did not like the process (from only the information I gathered)our AD took to make this hire.
