I posted the above comment and then an hour later we hear that IU has 4-5 players signing next week. Hmmm...

I remember when portal season felt like drinking from a firehose. Nowadays it's like a slow drip, drip, drip of information. My prediction is we'll get some staff and player announcements in a flurry next week and then it'll slow back down. Only makes sense given how quiet it's been recently.

If every rumor is to believed, Auburn, Florida, and now Kentucky are gonna get him. lol I'm just desperate for us to win a big recruitment.

Could really use a Wilkerson to IU announcement today... or any time, really. But today would be awesome.

I suppose I'm assuming Goode will be back. Based on what I've heard the odds are much better than originally thought. But who knows. A talented player with 3 years of eligibility that has already spent a season with DeVries is certainly worth pursuing. I only meant that he may be looking to go somewhere he's less likely to be competing for minutes.

Potentially quite big. 3 years of eligibility. Very good wing. But we may be a little stacked at that position (and thin at every other one lol)

2025 NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament Discussion

The revisionist history of some folks is absolutely ridiculous. Everything @Stuhoo said in his comment is correct. Normally I'd trim down a quoted comment but the whole thing is worth reading so I'm not editing it. We may not like Dakich, but before he became a shock jock a-hole supreme he was a pretty decent radio host, and he openly discussed many times that when he was brought in as the interim HC and walked into the locker room, he found needles and spoons that several of the players had been using. From a 2008 IndyStar article by our pal Jeff Rabjohns: “It was the guys that were doing drugs that were separate,” Gordon told The Indianapolis Star in an exclusive phone interview this week, speaking publicly for the first time about the issues that played a part in a once top 10 team failing to win a single postseason game. Gordon didn’t disclose which players used drugs, but he said D.J. White and two others still on the team were among those who did not. Attempts to reach White and several other former players were not successful. Gordon said Sampson “tried to stop it,” but the coach “was just so focused on basketball and winning and everything.” Gordon said he spent considerable time with a family friend in Bloomington because the atmosphere around some players was so bad he didn’t feel comfortable on campus. “Sometimes it felt like it wasn’t even a real basketball team because of all the turmoil that went on,” said Gordon, now a starting guard for the Los Angeles Clippers. “I was just thinking about that the other day. It was so crazy that all that stuff threw off a good season and made it a waste, basically. “It was really tough for us to be around each other all the time off the court because we were so separate.” Tom Crean later said the following on the Rex Chapman Show a couple years ago: "I had no idea what I was walking into there," Crean said on The Rex Chapman Show. "I found out the first day we had 19 Fs with three-and-a-half weeks left of school, started finding out about the flunked drug tests and that was just the beginning of it. "I had no idea what I was walking into there. I took the job on a Tuesday, by the following Monday, a (Marquette) vice president said why don’t we treat this like a bad April Fool’s joke and have you come back... "We would go clean lockers out and find lighters and roach clips. I had a player’s parent try to negotiate down failed tests down, if we got the two failed drug tests wiped out, the player would come back." Kelvin Sampson is a great ball coach. He knows his X's and O's. He knows how to get the Jimmies and the Joes. And perhaps at this point in his career he's figured out how to balance all that with being a role model and proper leader for his players and staff. But during his time at Indiana, his priorities were all out of whack, and he was doing things the wrong way. He cared about winning above everything else, and while winning obviously is the most important part of the job, neglecting everything else that matters will eventually erode any sort of foundation that winning can be built upon. He did everything wrong at Indiana, and perhaps it was a learning experience that made him a better coach down the line. If so, it truly is our luck that he had to learn those lessons here.

It was a pretty improbable run, I must say. Florida was losing by significant deficits in 4 of its 6 tourney games. R32 Uconn -- largest deficit 8, lowest win probability 23% E8 Texas Tech -- largest deficit 9, lowest win probability 4% F4 Auburn -- largest deficit 9, lowest win probability 15% NCG Houston -- largest deficit 12, lowest win probability 7% Each one of those comebacks on its own was improbable. The Texas Tech comeback was truly shocking. Against Auburn they were incredibly fortunate Johni Broome was hurt and not playing 100%, because I think Auburn would've won otherwise. And they're also fortunate that Houston beat Duke in an incredibly improbable comeback, because I don't think that Florida team last night would've had a prayer against Duke. Florida's a deserving champion and I'm not trying to take anything away from them. They proved all season they were one of the best teams in the country. If anything, the mental toughness and resilience it took to keep coming back in those games is a special quality in itself. But they were far from dominant.

Yeah I've got concerns about his efficiency. I still have PTSD from the Devonte Green years.

Agree we need some balance. I like the transfers we've got so far but we really need something other than seniors haha. Just gonna be slamming the portal again for a whole new squad next spring at this rate.

I appreciate you chiming in. Yeah, Auburn's football woes are certainly a major contributor to the excitement over the basketball program. There's been very little to cheer about with regards to football for quite some time. Basketball has been a nice reprieve. I equate it to the way Indiana fans embraced the football program during the good years under Tom Allen, and then this past season under Cignetti. I do believe a culture shift is occurring in both programs, but it will take several years of sustained success for it to stick long-term. Auburn is still a football-first school, and it will shift right back to that if the football program ever gets rolling again (which I hope it does, someone other than Alabama and Georgia needs to start winning the SEC).

NC is certainly a different part of the southeast than I was thinking of, haha. Definitely basketball country. I lived in Virginia for a while. There's Alabama fans everywhere it seems. Back when I lived there it was still firmly a football school with a dysfunctional basketball program. Virginia basketball was very good at the time but people where I lived (45 minutes from Charlottesville) seemed totally disinterested.

Out of curiosity, which part of the southeast? I only ask because I am curious about the Auburn and Alabama basketball fanbases. I have family from here in Indy who attended Auburn and they're big fans of the football program (obviously) but only recently started following and caring about basketball. Now they're rabid basketball fans, not too dissimilar to Indiana basketball fans. But their entire lives up until now they never cared about Auburn basketball; in fact, my cousin who graduated from Auburn in 2005 is still an avid IU basketball fan to this day. Do you see this sort of excitement for college basketball happening down there? Even if you're not in/near Alabama, I bet you encounter a decent amount of SEC basketball fans. I'm just curious what the excitement level is for the sport and if it's anything like what it is in Indiana -- and by extension the Midwest as a whole. Given this past season in particular, I feel like there would be a huge wave of basketball excitement gripping the region.

Goodness this thread got rowdy last night lol It's not about winning the press conference. Making big splashy portal signings is exciting, but look what happened this past year. The college basketball season isn't even OVER yet, and there's still almost 3 weeks left for guys to ENTER the portal. Would I have liked to land Conwell and/or Dix? Absolutely. But they went where they went for personal reasons not directly related to Indiana basketball. Missing on those guys seems like it was an inevitability, regardless of who's the coach or how toxic the fanbase (allegedly) is. Myles Rice committed to IU on April 13th of last year. Ballo on April 16th, and Carlyle on the 20th. And that was with a coach who had been here 4 years and had a staff going back many years with several connections to those players. They came to play for "terrible" fans and a terrible coach for less NIL money than we have now. We have a long way to go before we can make any judgments on how DeVries is attacking the portal this season. I'm not going to say "chill," because I'm anxious about all this too. But we definitely need to let it breathe. Things are going to start happening pretty quickly, especially once the full staff is announced.

He actually does. Most of his contacts nowadays are in the agent world. He also still has one or two guys in the athletic department, but they generally only feed him tidbits of whatever Dolson wants him to hear. He's gonna have to rebuild his relationships within the program.

I think the big reason why so many folks are disappointed is because a lot of "insiders" on twitter and elsewhere have been edging Indiana fans with "Conwell to IU" type posts. And then he gets to his next stop and immediately commits lmao It's not necessarily a knock on Indiana, the fans, DeVries, etc., because we don't know what all went into that decision. I think that as a fanbase we are just so overly tired by our top targets choosing to play elsewhere, especially when elsewhere is right down the road. Always the bridesmaid type sh!t. I get the frustration. I'm frustrated. But portal season is far from over. Lots more to come.

Not every year is the same as the last in terms of who is available in the portal. Nor is every player's decision-making paradigm the same as the next. Let's not act like a single recruiting miss will define this portal season. We have 10 more roster spots to fill. There are a lot of other irons in the fire. Just chill.
