I’ll admit I’m not sure and haven’t heard that. I’m just speculating that *if* we don’t get a JB or MW announcement this week, that’s a very plausible reason why.
-
It’s possible, yes.
-
I mean, you obviously start with your dream hire and work your way down. I don’t know that the admin ever preferred some of the guys this board does over TM - and I’d argue rightfully so. And sure, there may be other calls to make before you get to JB and MW (or even TM), but if they’re not interested, that process takes five minutes. I also just don’t know all of what they’ve heard already from the agents of the guys still in the tourney. It could be that for one or two of them they’ve been told “I’ll talk to you when we’re eliminated” in which case you move forward with narrowing your pool but don’t make the hire yet if it’s possible he could rise to the top of your list. For example, it could be that they still want to talk to someone like Porter before they make they’re hire, even if they favor JB and MW right now.

As of last night, there were two clear front runners in terms of likelihood to be the next coach - Belein and Woodson. I don’t know in what order, I just know it’s more likely it’s one of them than not them. It’s very unlikely at this point that the next coach is a current college assistant. If this stretches past this weekend, maybe they get involved with the coach of a team currently still in the tournament. Not sure on that. But don’t be surprised if JB or MW is announced in the next few days even though nothing is decided right now (or at least as of last night).

He said no.

The story about the agreement and the physical is just flat out BS. But Thad is now out. Woodson is increasingly likely. Don’t shoot the messenger.

I’ve got to just say trust me, but I understand if you don’t.
-
Yes we are.

In any event, those are just two examples. Insert any number of high major coaching options (Altman, Cronin, McDermott, etc). Reality is IU would rather have them than an old NBA assistant, were they available. And if you add up all the factors I referenced above, guys like that *should* be available, and they’re not.

Just do the math. We have a program with great tradition (albeit quite dated at this point), unparalleled administrative and alumni support (i.e., willingness to shell out dollars for success), a top notch venue, a top notch conference, a superb recruiting base, and yet... We can’t pull coaches from places like Arkansas or Texas Tech? (Let alone Virginia or Gonzaga or the Boston freaking Celtics..) And we’ve got an old NBA journeyman assistant on our short list? How else do you explain it? The culture of the program/fan base makes what would otherwise be a perfect job anything but. It’s toxic. Dolson is trying to sell TM on the job - not the other way around. That tells you what you need to know. Landing TM is the very best possible result.

Indeed.

Perfectly reasonable not to believe me. But I advise everyone to direct their attention to the Thad thread. That’s the best case scenario. And it’s in play. -
I repeat.

Candidate Thread: Chris Beard (Texas Tech)

I think I have seen the article you are referring to. It was from a Texas website a few years ago when Beard had just signed his extension and the author was adding together Shaka’s buyout for UT at the time (which was higher then than now) and Beard’s Big 12/Texas schools buyout. I posted Beard’s contract above. Texas would owe Tech 5 mil if it’s before March 31 this year, and they’d owe Shaka about 7. Plus a 6 mil salary for Chris to get him to move. -

It’d be more like 17-18. Still don’t think they’d do it. But it’s not anywhere near 30. -

2.5 million for schools outside of Texas and outside the Big 12. 5 million for Big 12 and Texas schools. https://media.everythinglubbock.com/nxsglobal/everythinglubbock/document_dev/2019/04/29/Chris Beard - 2019_1556568389982_85046221_ver1.0.pdf In theory, it’s payable for Texas. But I don’t think they will. They’d owe Shaka 7 million and then Beard 5, so it’d cost 12 million just for the right to hire him. Then they’d have to pay him 5.5+ annually to get him to leave a gig where he’ll make close to 5 moving forward anyway. I don’t see anyone getting him out of Lubbock. -
Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)

I will say I find it incredible that people can be led objectively and demonstrably astray by a few people and then want more info from those people. And then someone points this out and gets attacked. We should be hoping for Thad or Mussel. Beard is never happening. Bennett is never happening. Brad - I will say it again, he was never seriously considering the job. Belein is too old. -

Wasn’t offended at all. I was just pointing out how silly/wishful the sentiment is. -

The idea that Boston wrote him something and told him to say it and Brad didn’t like it or believe it but was just like “sure OK I’ll say it” is asinine and delusional. -

This post is a good example of why other fan bases/national media give so much sh*t to IU fans. -

Again, not calling you a liar, but your “sources” as I understand it are many degrees removed and on the IU side. mine...aren’t. -

Just the rumor AP was talking about in his post above. -

The guy who posted what you’re referring to here was straight up messing around. He even wrote that in a subsequent post. Relatedly: Brad was never seriously considering the job, no matter what any posters here were told. I believe they believed it. I’m not calling them liars. But it just wasn’t happening. -
This thread should have more posts. Just saying. ;)
