I think what some forget when they say, sign a pg wing and big at x amount and moneyball the rest…. Those big 3 have to want to come here. There’s more to these portal transfers than just whatever the school is paying them. Who are they getting to play with, who are they getting coached and developed by, and how likely are they to make a tournament run? Why would I sign with IU and it’s 8 unknown players, a program hasn’t been a consistent factor since before I was born. I’d take a pay cut to play on a top 10 team, with a coach with a track record of developing for the NBA, that will likely be making a deep March run. Those things might allow me to make more in the NBA than going to IU. To compete, we either need twice the NIL were rumored to have or to get incredibly lucky on lower dollar player evaluations.

This is why I struggle to get real excited until the ink is signed. Same as last year, we had guys allegedly and then last minute lost them. Here’s the sad truth, if all else is equal, why do any of these top guys choose IU? Unless a group of them want to band together and bring a brand that was hot in the 70s-early 90s back, I think expectations have to stay lower for the next couple years while hopefully the high school recruits come in, and change the culture and stay. And I’ll be happy to be proven wrong should that happen….

I like the optimism but I just don’t see it. Goes from not being able to see a minute of relevant action the last 1/3 of the season to a starting 4 in the B10? As a Jr; maybe, but as a sophomore I think his ceiling is 10-12 mpg off the bench.

I’ve been wondering why his name hasn’t been mentioned….

Those pointing out none of his WV players followed him other than his son as a red flag, 1) how do we know he wanted any of them at IU? 2) I think assistant coach/player relationships are being heavily discounted. 3) It’s April 13th.

When I was a junior in hs, I had no date 2 weeks before the prom. 2 days later one of the senior cheerleaders entered the portal. Somehow, I had enough NIL to convince her to go with me and had a great time at prom. We had quite a fun summer before she left for college. Back to the point… Moral of the story, there are 18 days left for players to ENTER the portal. And we’ve got people panicking about who we haven’t signed when there might be better options available in 2 weeks!

I don’t disagree with your overall point that rankings aren’t much of a guidance. I just meant those players you listed won’t be ranked that high, because other than Malik, their values and thus their rankings all fell this year as they should. Could they rise back up and turn it around at another program, absolutely. But other than Malik, and I’m no Malik fan, I’d wager none of them will. Each of those guys has major flaws.
