I agree with you but it won't play out like that. The fanbase is sick and tired of it (the last 20+ years). Honestly we all know that it was a desperation hire in the first place. Although I think Woody did the best he could by keeping TJD around for two years (to bad he couldn't keep him around for his COVID year) and coached up the team fairly well during those times (making the tourney which we all desperately needed). He totally dropped the ball this year meaning 0 guards through the portal. Hell he should of tried to keep Bates over depending on Gunn developing or two incoming freshmen one who is going to redshirt. I wish that X and Trey were the answers at guard we needed but after 10 year experience between the two of them their year to date performance SUCKS. He did a good job getting Ware and Walker (surprising good pick up) and got lucky Mgbako fell in his lap (which we all hope would be our savior). Honestly if he can keep Mgbako, Ware and Malik here next year (they don't hit the portal) because none of them is quite ready for the league and fill up the rest of the core with Liam (hopefully he stays committed). Bring in some guards that can shoot and take care of the ball and have some offense schemes then we can be successful.
