Indiana @ Illinois Game Thread- 3/7 - 8:00pm - FS1

Find a way to match intensity without getting sped up by the ball pressure. You’ve all seen it, it’s f’n constant and unrelenting. Unlike us, Illinois plays hard as balls all game long, EVERY TIME. Expect that. I suggest heavy minutes for Romeo and Rob. Hell, heavy minutes for the whole starting 5. No time to experiment with Moore, Forrester and Anderson. Tight rotation. Maybe 8 dudes tops. Hit your free throws because you’ll get opportunities there for sure. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

Romeo could go huge again. He got to the line about 15 times in the last one. I really feel the two backcourts kind of cancel each other out. Watch Out for Bejanishwhatever though. He can draw our bigs away from the basket. Guards have got to be aggressive rebounding. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

Indiana 71 Illininoisaneye 65 Attack and recover defense speeds our guards up early, leads to a few turnovers. But, IU doesn’t have a slouch defense itself and will force Illinois into several desperation prayers late in the shot clock. Some will even fall...most won’t. IU controls the backboard and wins on the road. Book it. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

That’s where I honestly figured we’d be. Fighting to to keep a 4 seed with a BTT win. There was that stretch just after the UM and Maryland games though where they got blown out basically in 4 straight. I believe it was Nebraska, Purdue, Northwestern and then UM for a second time. The UM games were what they were and Maryland was a close game. The others were ugly, bad losses where the effort wasn’t there. That 4 game stretch really tanked this young teams confidence, I think. Then it kept compounding from slow starts, into the Minnesota effort. Had they not been beaten so soundly, or had they been able to pull out 2 of those 4, I think the resurgence might have happened much sooner. Confidence is funny with young teams like that. Sometimes it can work the opposite way as well. A young team on a winning streak can start to believe they can’t be beat, and fully play like that too. Hopefully this is the start of that. The next two scare me. Illinois plays so hard. That ball pressure and constant token full court attack and recover stuff is no joke. The one I’m afraid of right now though is Rutgers. Seems weird saying it, I know. They put a whoopin on Iowa today, in Iowa. Gio was outstanding. They also have the length to cause trouble on the boards for us. That’s gonna be just as tough a stretch as UW/MSU in my opinion. Need everybody on board and healthy. Need to go for the throat immediately in both. Stand on them. Don’t know if you already found a replay brother but, I was able to re-watch immediately using the Fox Sports app on our smart tv. The app is available for just about every platform I can think of. Roku, Amazon, PS4, Xbox one. Any smart tv. Computers and tablets obviously. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

Rob. That foul on Winston with 8 to go was the smartest basketball play I’ve seen from this team in 4 years. The defense you played on him after? Well brother, that brought a tear to my eye. Amazing team effort today fellas. WHOLE team! Juwan, your work on the glass in the last two games has been master class my friend. You are my favorite player to ever put on that jersey. Justin Smith, I’ve been hard on you son. I did it because I believed so much in your ability. I knew there was a whole other level that you just couldn’t get to. Welcome to the show kid. Great game guys. No matter what happens the rest of the way, I loved the way you guys came together in these last couple weeks. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

It’s hedging with the center. I hate it. A hedge is used to stop momentum on a ball screen. Stop momentum and push penetration east and west. Stick with it too long and you’ll get absolutely fried. That’s what is happening. Can’t switch there so it has to be a quick re-direct and get outta dodge. My suggestion is to hedge with Smith and Thompson like they did the last game against MSU. Added quickness took away the easy bunnies for the most part. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

Yeah, same with us. I purchased after the first Purdue loss. I believe they had dropped their 4th straight with that one. I got section D row 16 for just north of 80 a piece. I picked them up because the prices had been well into the hundreds for that area, and I thought I had gotten the deal of the century. Of course, I never expected what would happen over the next month. Like I said in another thread, with frustrations mounting, I tried to sell them back to StubHub, but really had no chance of recovering my money as the prices for seats all around me had dropped into the mid 40’s. So we went. I got my money’s worth and more. It was still awesome, still loud. But yeah, even from the start, the wife commented that the place was empty. The only games I have taken her to had been over Christmas break. I wanted to show her what it was really like when that place really got jacked up with the students and all. Oh well, whatever. We saw a great game for a reasonable price. I’m cool with it. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -
I think I kind of side with Joe on the committee thing. Ok, fine. So conference record doesn’t matter. And yeah, there’s the no bad losses thing, I’m good with all of that. I’m not good with a committee that would ignore losing 11 of 12, including 5 straight in your own house. I think it’s ridiculous to believe any assembly of college basketball experts would simply ignore how lifeless they were in a majority of those losses. There is going to be the eye test folks. It’s simply human nature. I believe the .Net rankings and the quad system gets us a mention in the room, but the committee will vote it down without batting an eye. It’s miracle time for Indiana in my humble opinion. I suggest not losing again. I hate to say this, but as things sit, right now today, I would not respect a committee that puts them through. It wasn’t. Looked ok when I watched the replay after getting home last night, but tv was deceiving. There were noticeable bald spots in the sections opposite the benches and after the first overtime. It was looking thin indeed. Balcony was bald. Saw something that said it was 95% capacity but it’s my belief that was BS Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Great game to watch live. So glad I decided to go. Some thoughts....The collapse in the 2nd half was IMO (this may have been mentioned by some of you fine folks, I’m not willing to check) anyway, IMO a combination of poor shot selection by the wrong people, and Archie got caught with a really bad lineup. For an inexplicable stretch of about 4-5 minutes, he had Romeo, Rob, and Juwan on the bench at the same time. I don’t think most of the crowd really noticed what was happening there. I sure as f did, and was screaming for a time out like a crazy person. None came. That lineup, and the lack of a timeout to halt momentum frankly scares the crap out of me. The Green Foul.....ouch. That really just sucked all the life out of the building. Not shock though, it was more a feeling of “yeah, figured something like that would happen”. I’d say it seemed expected. That’s sad. Also, with exception of the beautiful game winning play by Romeo, we need to work on some plays for that late clock situation.. my goodness those looked super “wing it” from my vantage point. Last Note: Could you hear the woman doing the bird whistle as our players shot free throws? Annoying AF right? That’s Demetric Trice’s mother. She was sitting next to her husband, Trice’s father, for his tv interview. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

It was not. Many many empty seats. The sections opposite the players benches were quite barren. I’d even say that it was not quite 80% capacity even from the start. As double ot began, it was maybe 75%. There were noticeable bald spots. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

So, my wife put the kybosh on selling the ticket because she can’t get the hotel deposit back. So here I am at Nicks, pre-gaming hard as always. I’m really glad I didn’t sell them. Consensus here is that it will be another close one. I don’t care. You win this f’n game man. Do it for me. I sacked up, I paid for the trip. Now just win it. I don’t care if it’s ugly or what. Just win man. Give me that effort. Give me that will. Go Hoosiers. Side note, why’s Nicks always where the opposition seems to show up? I mean really? Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

Another promising career, derailed by the ever looming specter of the penalty foul shot. So sorry for your loss. No, I don’t know and have not heard of a rule change of that sort. Like other another poster said, “nobody on our bench seemed upset”. So I just figured I must have missed something, but for the life of me, I can’t figure it out. I’ve re-watched the play a number of times and it simply baffles me. He’s definitely fouled, and he definitely has two feet behind the 3 point line. I wonder, because the ball was long out of his hand when the contact took place, does it then become a non-shooting foul? If it is, it’s a rule change I didn’t know about. Looked like he came down on another players foot, after jumping for a rebound. Tweaked his ankle and was visibly limping during the defensive possession. He should be 100 by Sunday practice. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app
