Halfway Point: Who's Your Final Four?

Watched their 3OT game with Oklahoma St. last night.  Wicked fast and stingy on D and they have guts.  Cool under pressure and someone always steps up when they need it.  1st in country in points, 24th in rebounds, 4th in assists, 43rd in shooting percentage.

Thoughts on Crowd Booing CTC/ Players?

Now, let's talk some hoops, shall we?   So, in regards to the negative crowd reaction, I will say that I had never seen it's like in over 20 years during an IU game.  What scares me the most is, by what I've seen here, it will continue to happen.  I tell you, it scares me right down to the core, that many people now believe we can influence coaching decisions, by booing our own team.  Whether you supported it or not, and I confess I likely would have, nothing positive can come from its continued use.  If as I fear, it keeps happening, then we the fans, not the coaching staff, will be responsible for ultimately destroying this once great program.  I urge all of you to refrain from these actions while at the games as it is a stain on this program.   Damn, look at that, I derailed the thread.  Hope I don't get a warning.

  6. Yeah, it's an HBO series that you should definitely look for.  The accusations of political corruption are scary.  They definitely covered the geographic difficulties, and had a piece that claimed the government spent 20 million to paint the outside of all the abandoned buildings and dilapidated housing projects that could be seen from the roads entering the village, to hide the signs of poverty.
  7. Didn't know that.  I lived in Holland and Germany for 3 years in the military and never saw anything like that.  Thank goodness.
  8. I saw something on ESPN tonight.  The water thing was discussed and also that you couldn't flush your used toilet paper.  There was a waste basket next to the toilet that you threw it in.  Was even a multi-language sign explaining the procedure. Now that's nasty.

    The Rotation

Thank you for your excellent insights, both of you.  I concur.  I do feel like there must be more of a effort to feed the high post as you have said.  That pass appears to consistently be there and we don't utilize it.  Also the standing around the perimeter, staring at Yogi, kills me too.  We do move and reverse the ball but, so slowly.  Needs to be quicker and more decisive.  No one should hold on to it for more than a second when swinging.  I think that we do have some kids who can hit the 3 but, no one but Yogi will pull the trigger or, they can't because the defense recovers due to how slow we move it.  Also I really like the idea of Sheehey running the baseline in an attempt to get behind the defense...Have not seen them doing this all.  It is my opinion that we are going to see the 2-3 almost exclusively from here on out so I hope they are working on it.

    The Rotation

I have been trying for a week, to get a real conversation started on our struggles against the 2-3 specifically.  I have baited, goaded, pleaded and tried everything I can think of.  I honestly thought I was the only one.  I know we are all very upset over substitution issues, but that problem is tiny, TINY! compared to the fact that IU has zero knowledge on how to beat a zone.  JS HOOSIER and I were somewhat joking about how we (attack) the 2-3 earlier in this post.  Except that it wasn't a joke!  That is our actual strategy it would seem.  I'm telling you right now, if Minn. comes out 2-3 (and they definitely will) we will lose.  If my son's H.S. team comes to Assembly Hall and plays 2-3, we will lose....it's that bad in my opinion.  I wish to start a debate on this matter, however, I would like to hear what your ideas are on fixing the problems instead of just replacing the coaches/players.  Example:  I have suggested a few times to use Vonleh and HMP at the same time.  I feel that with Vonleh on the perimeter, just the threat that he can make the three will bring the zone out high.  He would have to be guarded by another big.  This, (again) is how Wisconsin uses Frank Kaminski and it works extremely well.

    The Rotation

Ha! What about our strategy of standing 35 feet away, ball on the hip, staring intensely inside the paint?  All that lazy passing and walking from spot to spot is so confusing.  Better to just stare at it.

    The Rotation

Very true I guess. Just was probing for people's thoughts on using Vonleh on the perimeter against the 2-3 the way that Wisconsin uses Kaminski.  Works very well for them because of his size and shooting ability, the bigs have to come out to guard him instead of packing in.  He just shoots right over the top of everyone else.  That's why I wanted to try HMP at the same time.  You are very right though the more I think about it.  I can see them both picking up fouls, and then what?  I guess I'm just scared to death of us playing a zone heavy team.  It's a huge problem in my opinion, bigger than any lineup conversation.  We look lost against it.

Somebody made a decent argument that it was for the MU player from an Indiana H.S.  Can't remember the guys name under this kind of pressure but he did hit a shot just before the T.O.  I could maybe get talked into that one.  I like that better than thinking that the boo' s influenced coaching decisions.

Thoughts on Crowd Booing CTC/ Players?

Found this breakdown out there.  Shows how CTC ended up with the fated lineup and maybe why.       At 13:04, HMP replaced Vonleh. IU had the ball under the offensive basket. The score was IU 10, Michigan 7. On the in bound, at 12:58, Williams promptly traveled. Michigan missed a three and the rebound went off a Wolverine player. The clock was at 12:39.   Etherington came in for Williams. Sheehey took a quick three (9 seconds into the shot clock) and missed. He then fouled on the rebound of Staukas missed jumper and, at 12:18, Howard replaced him in the lineup and Marlin entered the game for Yogi.   At this point the lineup was Marlin, Etherington, Robinson, HMP, and Howard. It's hard to get an uglier lineup than that. The score was still 10-7.   Stauskas then missed a three and HMP rebounded for IU. On offense, Stan missed a wide open HMP on the pick and roll. HMP eventually got the ball and passed to Etherington cutting to basket on the weakside near the baseline. Etherington caught the ball, jumped, and tried to pass it back out to the wing, but it grazed the bottom part of the backboard and Michigan recovered it and LeVert dunked it on the fast break at 11:29. 10-9, IU.   At 11:07, HMP went baseline and missed a shot. He was actually near the baseline and under the backboard, but he was still able to reach out put the ball up for a layup. He just left it a bit too short, Michigan rebound, and Irvin hit a two at 10:59. So, at this point, 1:38 has run off the clock since HMP replaced Vonleh and Michigan has outscored IU 4-0.   At 10:47, Crean sends Ferrell to the scorer's table to check in. Robinson brings the ball up court and mostly stands and dribbles until there's 9 seconds left on the shot clock. He passes to Marlin, who shoots a running one-hander outside the lane and floating baseline. It misses, but Etherington rebounds and then misses a point blank put-back. Michigan gets out on the break. IU has four guys back with Robinson the deepest, but he lets Irvin sneak behind him, receive a pass and make a layup. At 10:08, Crean calls a timeout. ____________________________________ I can understand resting NV and Sheehey caught a 2nd foul so I get that.  I presume Williams sat due to the turnover but how in the flying blue hell can we justify Marlin over Gordon for YF?  No Holloway?  Anyway, thought you guys would appreciate the play by play,  proves it wasn't all 4 at once.

    The Rotation

You make a good point.  TW is not yet an asset offensively, I would argue however, that his status as a starter, and the minutes he receives, are based more on his length, above average reach , and athleticism on DEFENSE....Where, he is a far, far better option than anyone on the bench.  That's not to say that he should always get those minutes, it's situational.  Sometimes Gordon will need to take his minutes instead, depending on the height of the guards/forwards he will cover on switches, and especially in a shootout.  But again, I say we just won a game, a big one, using the line up and minute distribution I listed above....First time since (and very similar) to the Sconnie game.  Why mess with it?

Thoughts on Crowd Booing CTC/ Players?

I guess I have mixed feelings.  One quick look at a fan website can tell anyone, there is frustration with the substitution patterns.  It's an issue that has been building in the collective mindset of the fan base for a few years.  That frustration boiled over on Sunday during, what many of us, felt was a must-win game.  Some of us chose to say, out loud, what was on nearly everyone's mind.  Myself, I was somewhat awestruck by it.  I did not think to see such a reaction from what I always believed were the most thick or thin, hell or high water, fans I have ever known.  I did not like it.  No, let's say, I did not like that I felt it needed to be done.  I felt bad for those players who were on the court at the time, and hope they did not take it personal, though I don't believe Howard, Marlin or Davis saw the court again.  In the end, we call them substitution patterns, and that's exactly what they are.  I think CTC subs starters at pre-planned times for set amounts and got caught in a pattern where that lineup happened to get stuck together, asked to hold serve, and couldn't.  CTC called time, and adjusted.  Whether or not the crowd reaction influenced a coaching decision, is something I don't even want to think about.  Good God no.

    The Rotation

Ok, I'm just saying that this lineup and the distribution of minutes worked.  We won a big game because we played our best players for once.  Williams had 21, JH and AE had 10 a piece, Gordon 16 and Perea 7.  I can live with that because it worked.  Jeremy took a couple shots and played good D.  I don't believe Howard would have attempted a shot If he had 20 minutes.  Maybe more pt would get Jeff some confidence but after a win like that, I'm afraid to tinker anymore.  Maybe trim 5 from Williams to get Howard a look but I don't know, wish I knew if he could shoot or not.  Anyway, moot point because CTC is probably gonna play em all regardless.

    The Rotation

[quote name="ElectricBoogaloo" post="34949" timestamp="1391407958"]I agree that Howard has been good at playing defense and taking care of the ball, definitely better than Hollowell, Perea and Davis. I think JH can out play Howard anytime, anywhere. Not saying Howard can't play, I think there are minutes out there for him, but without that transfer, Howard doesn't see the court. Jeremy, in my opinion, has a much bigger upside in the box scores. Heck, neither is perfect right now. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Go with it!  That lineup is formidable and can play with anyone in the B1G.  AE, JH, EG each get 10-12.  Thought it might be interesting to play Vonleh and Perea at the same time on offensive possessions, with NV on the perimeter to stretch out the zone.
