    Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Maybe don’t read a thread titled “Fire Mike Woodson” if you don’t want to hear opinions about Mike Woodson being a bad college coach.

I believe the point is that he has competitive advantages being at IU that mean his record is buoyed by those resources which further negatively reflects on Woodsons coaching ability. In this day and age where our NIL budget dwarves other B1G programs a .500 record at IU is actually “below average” from a coaching standpoint given the massive resource advantage.

Dan Monson was the first name that came to mind but I’m sure there are others.

Yeah, but my question is about what result should he get fired for? As we’re in the “Fire Mike Woodson” thread it seemed a reasonable question. Personally I think if this team is sniffing the bubble, or we have multiple 15+ point embarrassing losses, then barring a sweet 16 or better run he should be fired. I’d consider “sniffing the bubble” as anything worse than a 7-seed.

Fair enough, I’ll rephrase: For the people defending Woodson, what should expectations be for the season? What is good enough where he should be our coach for the following year versus what should get him fired?

Find posts defending Woodson? Nah, they’re everywhere, you can find those pretty easily. Not sure why you mention Archie, I don’t care about that guy. Just what people who defend Woodson think success looks like. Copping out by saying you can’t is certainly one way to answer it.

Right, but you could set an expectation there: ”no embarrassing losses and realistically competing for a B1G title late in the season” I’m just curious what the Woodson defenders think. I agree with them that the roster looks better but I think we’ll underperform our talent because we have a mediocre coach.

For the sunshine pumpers: With all of that sunshine you’re pumping, what should expectations for this year? If you’re so confident in our great coach let’s hear what a good year looks like versus what a bad result looks like that should get coach fired.

Agreed here. Just seems more likely that Woodson underperforms versus the talent we’ve acquired. Would love to be wrong. And I don’t think it’s “he doesn’t know how to coach”. Instead I think it’s “he doesn’t know how to coach college basketball” which is just a different beast than the NBA. He seems to do well with the NBA talent on the roster, he just doesn’t do anything with the rest of the roster.

So successful! And as he has told us, he has done his job. Had us right there with powerhouses like Richmond, Yale, and Umass.

Also, too much experimenting hurts if you don’t win by enough even early in the year.

    Expectations for the 24-25 Season

I mean, if you look at the metrics from last year then Trey is better than Carlyle by a lot. So we’re hoping on potential here more than Carlyle objectively being better than Trey at this point in his career. I still think our best lineup will be Rice, Carlyle, Gallo, Mgbako, Ballo. Best combination of offense and defense we can put on the court at once with skill sets that compliment each other.

I think anything short of a 7-seed in the tourney should be fire able with this level of talent, barring a run to the sweet 16. A truly good coach would have this team in the top-10 though IMO. Sneaking into the tournament would be an awful coaching job.

Yeah “should” and “will”, we’ll see how it goes. Completely agree that we’d be better off getting Reneau 15 minutes at the 5 versus any of our current portal options. You need backup size “just in case” but whoever we bring in is a “use in case of emergency” player at this point. Start Rice, Carlyle, Goode or Galloway, Mgabko, Ballo with Reneau subbing in for Ballo at the 5 while trying to limit their overlap. You still have Reneau at the 4 for 10+ minutes a game but this, IMO, is the best use of our front court given how the roster is currently constructed.

Yeah, the lack of hype over Tucker is something the found myself getting excited about. And I say that because normally we’d be expecting a 5-star to come in and have to be a major contributor for the season to go well, but we’ve brought in so much talent that it doesn’t seem like a requirement. He may be the 7th or 8th guy on this team at the start of the year, that’s crazy.

If/when he’s gone from IU there isn’t a serious school that would consider him for the job. But sunshine pumpers like to ignore that one. Everyone in the country outside of some portion of the IU fan base can see this.

What can I say, I was being patient :) The lack of bad play was obvious in our first few games, and the poorly constructed roster obvious before the season began. But even then I was supportive of Woodson as our coach until February or so, I’m still a homer and just want us to do well. But I jumped on the “ok, he needs to go train” in February when the lack of accountability just kept being more apparent and his hubris was unbearable for me.

Sounds like we’re in similar boats although the Rabby stuff didn’t affect my opinion as I was already over the fence once that came out. I’ll be cheering for the team, and Woodson, to do well this season. The new additions give me hope. The skeptic in me says he’ll find ways to have the team underperform and will still allow lesser teams to torch us from 3 because we “play big” while somehow still being a bad rebounding team and missing our free throws. I’d love nothing more than to be wrong here and to be turned into a “let Woody cook” type by mid season.

Yeah, for me we were on track the first 2 years. Year 3 was a massive failure though. Even then, I was on board with Woodson up until about February. He lost me when he just kept blaming anyone and anything but himself for the results on the court. I was willing to look past a down year, and a terrible style of basketball apparently, but lacking proper accountability was what turned me.
