I think a better question might be, who would win if we played Drake right now. I think Drake would win….they beat Vanderbilt by 10 points, Vandy has beaten Tennessee and Kentucky this season and would likely beat us!

Totally hypothetical. I am sure our roster would be a lot different…he demands and stresses defense, and his offense is patient, only take good shots. So I am confident we would be better, but a lot would depend on the roster?

If IU hires Cronin you will get the same coach that was at Cincinnati and UCLA, eventually he’ll string together a couple of lousy seasons and the fans will demand his bald head….6 more years of mediocrity and the IU program puts even more time between the years we were elite and what we have become.

And McCollum has won 4 D2 National titles and has won an incredible 80% of his games. I think McCollum is even less of a risk than RMK was at the time!

I wish I would have said this, Cignetti is a much better example, I was just pointing out that Knight was hardly a sure thing, he was also a big risk. If you are willing to settle for Cronin or even Brownell, McCollum is the better choice because of his potential upside!

Bobby Knight had not even made the NCAA tournament once when he came to Indiana in 1971….I know it was tougher to make the tournament just saying he was not much better prepared than McCollum. His last year at Army he was 11-13……..

You make good points, Cronin is definitely the safer choice, but I would still take the risk and get McCollum, guy has won 80% of his games, I don’t care where you are coaching, you win that much with our NIL he will win at Indiana!

I can tell you honestly, this was 20 years ago and we had only heard it was the driver, no other theory, we came to the governor’s hat all on our own. We need a thread somewhere to discuss this!

If those are your choices you don’t let the fans dictate your decision, you try to hire Ben McCollum. He’s no riskier in my opinion that Cronin or Brownell, 43 years old with a phenomenal winning record, he might just be a future superstar coach!

I agree…I think it is that $100M number being thrown around, if that is even close to being true, do you just go from that and Stevens says no, to Cronin? Throw those numbers at Wright, Donovan, Pearl, Self, and Drew, and then maybe Cronin. But again, if you are going to offer Cronin, why not go for McCollum who is 10 years younger and might be one of the great coaches of the future?

I don’t think people are saying Crean was better, they just believe in the end Cronin’s results will be close to the same. Maybe we make the tournament a few more times over 5 years, maybe we compete for a B1G title one of those years. But in the end he is not a very exciting choice….after what this fanbase has been through a lot of fans want a big name coach that will put IU back in elite status! If they are really willing to pay $100M for Stevens there has to be a more exciting coach they can bring in than Cronin. Like I said, I would rather just see them take a shot at McCollum, who is in his early 40s and might just be a home run? If it’s Cronin I will support him and hope he makes me look foolish and puts up a couple of banners!

I agree, but I would take McCollum over Brownell, to me both would be a huge risk but McCollum is 10 years younger and in my opinion has a better chance of being a home run!

How long does it take to say, “we aren’t interested?” If the conversation goes beyond that, maybe Dolson is open to his consideration?

Because IU has such high standards for who we bring in to coach up our boys, we hired Archie Miller and Mike Woodson….maybe we should loosen up a little?
