That’s logical because teams without big budgets need to mine talent locally. But IU has, even under Woody, pulled kids from everywhere: West Coast, east Coast, Florida, midwest, etc… we have the budget and profile to be competitive. CDD should be competitive nationally. I take it as almost axiomatic that he will be. I think we agree on everything else.

Again, I’m not worried about time or CDD. I’m just pushing back on the implication that IU should be looking regionally if guys don’t go far from home. Woody was, as you point out, a disinterested recruiter. So the fact he was able to get guys to IU from all over the country makes me think CDD can do the same. The fact that those kids didn’t do well here is more about Woodys coaching, imo. The year before he pulled in Ware off the west coast did well enough to be a first round draft pick.

Ok. How about Kaleb Banks going to Louisiana? Did he work out good enough for you? Or Love to Arizona? It’s largely irrelevant whether they worked out anyways, when taking the ability to recruit someone somewhere.

Woodson pulled two guys off the west coast and a kid out of Arizona. Can’t be that hard if Woody can do it. I get the family reasons with Dix but there shouldn’t be any excuses for other kids.

What’s the difference between a 2 & 3 in CDD’s offense?

If they can move the ball and push tempo maybe they can get up 30+ attempts a game from 3.

If they can make the ball move and McNeely mainly gets fairly open catch and shoots, he could shoot about 50%from 3. He was over 40 at Virginia and he took some ones that were pretty tough shots at the end of the clock most games.

I’m not even trying to be flippant, but maybe the guy who just died (I forget his name) left them a bunch of money or something. Or Kelsey is a heckuva salesman. They’re landing staring quality guys as backups at this point unless they’re running out all guards.

Funny enough I made a post in the other thread saying the opposite. It’s possible the right coach brings out player in him, but it would be a big gamble for CDD

Lower-ish salary. But the 80% buyout is no joke. I hope he works out because we’re tied to him for 4-5 years.

Several people called it at the time and it seemed a head scratching pickup for Kansas. I think he’s a selfish player, but maybe the right coach can salvage him this coming year. I wouldn’t want him at IU.

That’s actually probably a good spot for him. Ultimately nobody cares about basketball there, he’s tucked away in college station, but they have the money to let him build.

That’s not how it works. You have to pay your own guys too. You have to pay to retain good players. Assuming IUs budget is one of the tops in the country Lville doesn’t have any more money to offer someone like Conwell. They just choose to pay him more.

I think so. I like Conwell and think he would’ve been a really good fit. But he isn’t the end-all, be-all of portal guards. He’s still a little undersized and isn’t going to take over games with his athleticism. We have top level money, any coach worth anything is going to put together a top roster. We’ll see DDVs plan start to come together after a few signings. The mystery is killing people now.

Most obvious answer is that he doesn’t have them yet. They could be on a team still playing, for instance.

If you look at the NBA, they can basically pay 2 players what they consider the “max”. That eats up between 50-70% of their cap. I’d expect college to be similar. Your top 2-3 guys should eat the majority of your salary. So if CDD took a look at Conwells number and said “too expensive “ that’s part of his job to make that call.

Lville fans didn’t expect it because they had no frame of reference. Last season was nearly uncharted territory. But now we have 3 good data points from local rivals(ish). I guess it took 72yr old Pitino at St John’s 2 years. But so far the early returns are in and there doesn’t seem to be any excuses for good coaches at elite programs needing time. Everyone starts over and recruits their whole roster every year. Woody did it last year and we put expectations of top of the conf and S16 on him. Why would CDDs expectations be lower than Mike freaking Woodson?? That’s crazy to me.

I’m assuming CDD has a plan and is sticking to it. Powell was mentioned early when he was first hired but not much since the portal opened.

I tend to lean this way, but…. College fans are going to have to start thinking like pro fans. It matters what players you get AND at what cost. I find it hard to believe Louisville way outbid us, but if they did to a number that makes it difficult for them to get other good players, then it isn’t necessarily a big loss. In the NBA, for example, your two best players eat up a high percentage of your overall salary and you fill in from there. You can’t spend 1/3rd of your salary on your 3rd or 4th best guy.

That’s true. Lville could’ve overpaid. Or maybe they have more money than IU. If IU is spending 10-12mil and Conwell got 4, I can see that being too much even though I like him.

You can point that out. But then I’d have to point out he avg over 12 as a sophomore and his numbers were clearly depressed by playing with Storr who was a ball hog and then playing off the ball some when Klesmit came in. I watched about every game he played both of those years, and he was one of the better guards in the league. His year this season should not have been a big surprise.

Last year Kelsey was all hope and potential. Didn’t stop him from landing top guards like Hepburn.
