They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
str8baller replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
He could be coaching here now if he wanted. He could be sailing the pacific in a dingy uploading videos to YouTube if he wanted. My point being that a sitting GM leaving a team in the middle of a title run would be pretty unprecedented. One would definitely burn a few bridges leaving that way. It’s the type of thing an agent would throw their body in front of, but his wife’s his agent so maybe he doesn’t care. I agree. I think he would still be a tier 1 hire but maybe not as much of a slam dunk as I once did. You see so many other successful coaches getting out of the current NIL/recruiting situation I think it’s hard to know how a coach would do in it until they’ve been in it. -

Timing is really rough for currently employed nba guys. The season doesn’t end until June and nobody is walking away from the defending champs before the season is over. (I can’t believe I am even Stevens poasting…but I’m bored with IU basketball right now and barely watched the game…) -

Oh man… you missed the Lon Kruger to IU salad days. Like the Stevens deal except exactly the opposite. Lol -

I think it was one of Dan Wetzels books that had a chapter on how Alabama landed Saban. Basically the exact opposite of IU sending out the doofus brigade. -
I saw Rhode Island is higher than us in NET. Archie’s revenge tour?

Just to play devils advocate, I’d say the cig hire was a home run. Giving him that extension is upping the stakes. Plenty of schools have handed out big contracts to coaches after an initial bout of success and then regretted it. Call up your friendly Florida state fan if you want horror stories. As far as basketball didn’t dolson lead the failed Steven’s hire which led to Woody? And didn’t dolson give Woody a raise? Also, where would all the trust of dolson come from? If IU does things by committee wouldn’t those people want credit for hiring cig? And wouldn’t they want a say in the next big hire? (again, ftr I’m a cig fan) -

That’s merely a reflection of their own competence. I listed one example I knew for a fact. Lickliter at Butler and basketball. Jurich at Lville was purported to have final say during his tenure. Either way, there are other examples of schools empowering talented people. Obviously the job involves schmoozing donors and placating alumni to some extent, but it’s simply not a fact that having a bunch of voices in the room for decision making time is the only way. It’s just how Indiana operates. -

Not really. Alvarez exercised almost universal control over UW football. Of course, he built the thing and kept it near the top for about twenty more years. There are other examples, but they too are singularly successful people. I’m sure that is confusing, almost alien, to people within the IU administration, though. -

I mean…that would explain a lot about the last 25 years of IU basketball. -

Been through this a bunch of times so I’ll just say I disagree and you can see my post history longer thoughts on it. If he didn’t do anything he wouldn’t have gotten a show cause and if we didn’t self impose we would have gotten the same. But if Sampson is a victim on this board then so be it…. Woodson needs to go tomorrow and ironically he’d leave the program better situated for the next guy than anyone since Knight. -

I’d argue Sampson was the worst given what he did to the program or maybe we should just exclude him from the rankings. From there it’s hard to be as bad as Archie. But what’s even more amazing is in that time we’ve had almost zero success and only 4 coaches, 5 if we’re counting Sampson. That is an absurdly low amount of turnover for such dismal results. From the outside in, you have to wonder if the IU admin cares about basketball at all. -
I wouldn’t take anything the committee says at face value. They’ve never once elucidated a coherent criteria that didn’t change from year to year to get the teams and matchups they want. Hopefully IU is ranked 9th or 10th and that gives them the opportunity to have teams like SMU or Georgia possibly fall below them. A home playoff game would be cool.
-
I don’t think there are any real threats left to IU getting a bid. If the SEC gets 4 teams in it won’t be at the expense of a 4th big ten bid imo
-
They’ve almost always valued big wins over than bad losses. IU can only rise so high with our resume. But other teams have made it nice for us by making a mess with a bunch of losses. The way the bucket game is going I think we’re more likely than not to get a first round home game.

Cook these guys! Way to come make a statement. -
I think it’s possible depending on where they rank us this coming week and what the matchups would look like.
-
Love with one of the best hurdles you’ll see in the ND game.
-
Win by 1 and we’re in. Only way out is with a loss.
-
Games have to be played yet. Some teams have to lose just based on matchups. Any non Texas team in the sec that loses will drop past us potentially and maybe Texas. An ACC team will. Now PSU likely will. ND could. We only need 2-3 to drop past us to get a home playoff game
-
If USC can’t stop the run they have no shot, imo. NDs run game is one of the best in the country. If they didn’t split carries love would have Jeanty numbers. With that said, USC does not lack for talent. Kind of like Michigan.
-
Think of all the people we likely jump at this point. If ND loses, it would be one more. I seriously think there is little upside to Penn State losing unless you really want a chance at a Big Ten title. I’d rather have a home playoff game almost guaranteed!
-
I could be wrong but they showed two Michigan players on the sideline that had a bunch of tears and snot running down their face they were trying to wipe away. That was what it looked like to me. They could’ve just been bawling their eyes out cause their Michigan men… or something.
-
Michigan went to plant their flag at midfield and Ohio state flipped out. Then it was broke up and one of the Michigan players was parading the flag around the Ohio State players and they tackled him/the flag pole
