Just to be different…what are people’s thoughts on Wes Miller? He was a hot name a few years ago. He hasn’t tore it up at cincy but they’ve been solid. They did a serviceable job last year, their first in what was a brutal Big 12. Also , I have to think the NIL era is tough on a place like Cincinnati. They’ve been just outside the tourney the last couple years. Maybe not hot enough for UNC like before but good enough for IU???

I get where you’re coming from and not the worst pitch if delivered right by the right person. But I’d love to be in the room for it. There’s gotta be at least a 50% he laughs and points out IUs been saying that since he was wearing a Depauw uniform.

I can’t wait for May’s agent to use IU and this delusion for a nice contract boost for him at the end of the year.

TJD goes in with Zeller and probably Jeffries as players so singularly talented in size, athleticism and intelligence they were able to make good defenses out of bad coaches. All 3 don’t get enough credit, imo.

If…and I emphasize “if”…he turns out to be a great coach, I wonder how the “every IU coach gets 4yrs” crowd will feel knowing he surely had to be ours for the taking if only we would’ve booted an obviously failing coach last year.

D, even more so than O, is a team concept. What Demo is saying is that in a proper scheme Goode can hold his own because he’s willing and smart enough. He’s not a great 1 on 1 defender, but what does that matter? We’ve had good 1 on 1 perimeter defenders and still give up open 3s like it’s morning shoot around. This teams D is bad because of one person, and he isn’t wearing a jersey.

This is the truth. An off shoot of that is boosters who are willing to step up and pay a coach big. Other than that there’s nothing about this program that separates it from any middling P5 program.
  11. I like Tucker. Tons of potential. Unfortunately he’s an odd fit with this team. In that role we need somebody who can play off the ball and knock down 3s. Tucker likes to dribble into his shot in the midrange. Honestly I think Galloway is in the same spot where he excels with the ball in his hands and when he starts he has to play almost purely off ball. These team has talent that needs coached desperately.
  12. Glad I left for dinner before half. Sounds like I didn’t miss anything.
  13. That Rice to Tucker oop was really nice.
  14. Woody playing small ball feels like a sitcom: the gang tries small ball. I hope it pays off
  15. Probably too embarrassed. I would be.

I was so checked out of the Crean years I don’t even remember that search well but I think the others are right in that he was a hot candidate. OSU in particular waited, was upset they missed on Archie, then happy they pulled Holtmann which then made some IU people do a double take. IIRC I personally was just fine, but not overly enthused, with the hire. You always roll the dice taking someone from the lower ranks. But I think you’re right about his last name kind of soothing over concerns. Sean was very successful even with all the baggage. Two things are true: 1) Archie was a good young mid maj candidate. A lot of big programs would have hired him. 2) He turned out to be awful. That’s the case with a lot of promising young candidates and why programs try and hire a proven commodity if they can. I don’t see too many proven commodities on the market these days.

What a terrible list. Honestly, IU has a host of problems the least of which is timing. Of course we seem to create our own problems there too.

It seems to vary. I’m sure some do at some level. But at the class of Indiana and the like you’re usually poaching known quantities. The problem with asking a guy to interview is that someone else might not ask them to. Look at Dusty May last year. He was interviewing schools, not having schools interviewing him. There’s simply more openings than hot coaches to have very much leverage. I agree with you about Archie though. He was such a poor fit it seems like somebody should’ve caught that whether or not they had a sit down formal interview.

We’ll mark you down as a “no” on Brad Steven’s…lol. The obvious place to look for a college coach is the college ranks. But I suspect you could pull a good coach from elsewhere and succeed, especially in the nil era where being an elite recruiter may not be an absolute necessity anymore. Woodys problem isn’t that he coached in the pros but instead that he isn’t a good coach.

Actually it is exactly the opposite. You’re dealing with guys who want to win. IUs administration turns people off because they reek of losing and weakness. You could fire someone every 4 days and it wouldn’t matter to a winner, because winners never even contemplate losing or failing or getting fired.

He’s 19-25 last season through this one. He’s also the best coach they’ve ever had accounting for half their NCAA appearances, most of their post season wins and their only FF. If age weren’t a factor he’d surely be getting more time. Might even be partially mutual.

Same. Cignetti shows some people it is possible. Of course anyone that follows other schools or looks around knows it is possible. But IU has been so bad it verges on the statistically improbable. At this point we could hire the president of the Celtics and I’d be cautiously optimistic at best knowing that IU basketball could screw anything up.
