They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

He’s kind of Gene Keady-lite. And his time at Marquette wasn’t any better than Tom Crean or Mike Dean both whom preceded him. -

That’s what I found. Wisconsin has broad open gov laws. Usps is right that they love their basketball program but they don’t have much else or a ton of cash—don’t even have their own stadium. IU could outbid them but he’s a perfect fit there. I wouldn’t go for him or Buzz, personally. McDermont or maybe Devries (harder to outbid and also less accomplished) would be good pulls, among a couple others. But that should be IU’s floor. Sampson/Crean/Archie were all in that level or higher. Davis and Woody were terrible unforced errors. -

I just threw buzz in for usps. Lol… It’d be a big raise and a bigger commitment to nil (plus revenue sharing…a school like marquette is dead in the water there) for McDermontt and shaka. I’m agnostic on that crew. Find the one that wants to jump. All my eggs would be in option 1 and 2. And probably 80/20 tilted towards option 2. -

What???? Where do I find this info. I can’t believe Shaka (I know Matquette fairly well) makes $5 and he’s gotta be the highest paid. Either way.. sub in whatever number you want to make the scenario work -

Yea, I had always heard it was top 25 in both categories. There’s and outlier here and there, but it is a dang good indicator if there ever was one. -

If I were in a bunker somewhere with Dolson strategizing, I’d probably suggest something like the following.: 1) Call Stevens (or May if you love him) and give them the godfather offer. Let em know you’re getting it right this time and they’ll likely never have an opportunity to coach at IU (if that means anything to them) or make this much money coaching again. Give them 48hrs to decide and move on. 2) While you got the donors checkbook open, call up one of Bennett or Wright—whomever you think is likelier to coach again—and offer them the same deal but with 5-6 years instead of 10. It’s their best chance to 2x or 3x their net worth at this age and IUs best chance at conf and National titles in the next 5 years. 3) Pick your guy from the McDermont, Devries, shaka, Buzz (for usps) group of guys who are guys who Midwest guys who are experienced and can coach their @$$ off. Offer them 3-5mil knowing multiple S16/E8s are a floor and a good baseline to build off of. If you can’t accomplish any of that you don’t deserve to be the AD at IU. -

He’s probably at the top of my “we can definitely get this guy with enough money” list. I wouldn’t start there but he’d be #3 on my decision tree. -

You and I are going to have very different reactions to his inevitable hiring. Lol… I’d probably throw him in the Brownell category. We’d be fine, but no championships incoming. He’s also a strong personality and I wonder if he’d eventually wear thin with the Indiana HS coaches. -
I was at this one. Great game. Great atmosphere—obviously the whole town was for Butler but so were the other two schools fans, most notably a couple WVU good ol boys who were giving the Duke fans hell. That last shot was about an inch away from being the greatest shot ever.

I don’t think he’s ever lived east of the Rockies. Agree he is a good coach tho Technically as coach, right? But he stepped in and their young guys were competitive right away. NBA fell in love with him as much as the college world pretty quickly. -

A really big name can command that. Phil Jackson to the Knicks. Reilly was given ownership in the Heat. Rare. But that’s why in the previous post about leverage I said i didn’t know if he was quite at that level. Honestly, the best way for Stevens to get there if new ownership really wants him would be to leverage a huge IU offer and hold that over their heads. It would also explain why from the IU side there “appears “ to be interest again. -

That is good context. It could also cut the other way: that’s all the more incentive for new ownership to pony up whatever it takes to keep Stevens there to guide them through that ordeal. Either way, I think the point that new ownership is variable that adds some uncertainty is a good one to keep in mind. -

He’d most likely end up like Crean in that it would be another decade of mediocrity with enough bright spots to keep him around for that decade. He is another one nobody would consider if he didn’t come from Indiana and was buddies with Cheaney. .500 league record. Never finished higher than 3rd. 4/13 tourneys made. Tough place to coach but that isn’t elevating it that much. With that said, I knew a guy on his staff at WS and they spoke pretty highly of him. He’d likely be our best coach since Knight. But they’ve all been so bad that it is a low hurdle to clear. I’d rather take a shot on a young guy with talent. -

Pretty good point here. He wouldn’t be the first championship GM/coach to leverage himself into a small piece of ownership. I’m not sure if he’s to that level quite yet, But depending on how much he’s valued by new ownership it is possible. What better leverage than a $100mil offer from IU in hand? -

I thought he would statistically take a step back, at least, without his safety blanket. But he took another step up in the offseason. 9 assists with that crew is crazy. Probably the mvp of the conference, if not the best overall player. Oh I am…that’s the only fun I’ll have over the next two months: taunting Purdue fans and anyone who will listen about our upcoming Stevens led dynasty. Then we can just pretend it never happened when Buzz Williams is announced as coach. -

It’s hard to imagine knight or smith or rupp would’ve been too much less successful at osu or ku, respectively. But I suppose it’s possible. But in any event, guys like Roy Williams, Eddie Sutton, and even our own branch McCracken have done it successfully in div 1. Countless others at other levels. Woodsons problem isn’t where he played basketball, but how he coaches basketball. -

5 on 4 and still giving up a wide open 3 to the ballhandler. Lol… That would give a good coach an aneurysm. Woody was probably non-plussed -

People will say Woodson wouldn’t have gotten considered for the IU job unless he was a former player and then with a straight face mention Dane Fife as a possibility for the next staff. -
We all thought Knight was back. Patterson just didn’t have that killer instinct. This led one of the top 5 things on PTI, IIRC. Even the bad times back then were better than now. we’re essentially irrelevant.

I used to watch the nba more back then, and his two coaching stints really weren’t as bad as his overall record suggests. He worked for two atrocious organizations at the time. In the NBA you can get some mileage with just roster/star management and guys seemed to like him. He also came in and did better than his predecessors at both places. So he didn’t face a ton of fan abuse. Quite the opposite really. But there’s a reason he didn’t last long at either spot and we’re seeing it. But this is probably the most sustained fan discontent he’s faced in his career. -
Worst part of expansion. We’re probably going to have a bunch of years where unbalanced scheduling basically determines the conf champ.

This is actually hilarious in a George Costanza way. It likely would not do a damn thing to keep him. but it would make IU scramble on the messaging front. I actually want to see a coach on the hot seat try this now.
