They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
str8baller replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Duke, Kansas, Kentucky and probably UNC are demonstrably better, imo. Infrastructure, admin, fan support, funds, etc.. are all better or at worst even with IU. From there you’d have to think IU is hands down better than the next group that starts with UCLA and probably includes Uconn, MSU, Lville and non basketball, but basketball friendly, schools like Tenn, Texas, Florida, etc… to say IU is a for sure a top 5 job. I’d say we’re one of the top 10 jobs that matter still. But that doesn’t mean people are beating down the door to get here. -

Yep. I kinda poke at the younger fans for their more favorable opinion on Crean. But I can’t really blame them. I don’t know what any fans under 40 would even expect out of this program. Fans under 30 haven’t seen us do a thing unless they remember Davis’s one run when they were a little kid. Even a B+ coach that put together something like a S16 and E8 in his first four years would have the fans riled up. -

Winning will bring in the fans, no matter the coach. IU is kind of running out of runway with some fans though, I think. I can kind of feel it with the group of people that I text and talk to regularly. So rolling the dice on another up and comer and it coming up snake eyes again is risky. -

They made another rebuilding type trade yesterday. I could potentially see him jumping back. Although UNC is maybe a better fit. -

Minny isn’t that bad of a job. And the reason it’s bad is because pitino and Johnson ran it into the ground. Tubby had like five 20 win seasons and Haskins obviously had that fun FF team with Bobby whatshisname. Northwestern is the worst job in the Big Ten and has been forever. If we’re hiring Mini Pitino I’m going to start making non-satire Greg Tongel posts. -

With different timing he would have been. Looking at his time at ucla he wouldn’t have been worse than Crean. He also wouldn’t have been good enough to win big consistently. -

In the macro sense, he’s not. In the micro sense…well that’s the ADs call. Moving up the coaching ranks is like moving up the fighting ranks. You’ll never know if you’re a champ, a contender or just a gatekeeper until you get the shot. The thing about the B1G is that nearly every coach is better than the best coach in Drakes conf. For every Bo Ryan there’s a Steve Alford. And for every Alford there’s a Todd Lickliter. -

Steve Alford it is! Harbaugh to Michigan is probably the best analogue to Stevens coming back. I say it’s a done deal… -

Another disappointing Knight season. Sadly it would be a top ten season out of our last 25 non-Knight years. Recker, Guyton, Patterson and a young Lewis is not a bad top of the rotation. Unfortunately Guys like Richardson also played 20 min a game. Luke Jimenez played 10+ min. The away losing streak to UW is mostly us being bad x Bo Ryan. We could break it at any point and should have two years ago. -

I think we can say the only part that is true is IU is pining for Steven’s again. I would in no way want Woody to have any hand in choosing the next coach, but I can see it from his perspective. He has to know this is going south and it’s killing his once stellar reputation with his only fan base—IU fans. So as part of his negotiating his exit him and Buckner try and get a say in the next coach so if they succeed he can basically be welcomed back and essentially frame it as “I saved IU from the disastrous Archie era and helped set us up for the current guy (who ideally is succeeding).” At first the Shrews thing seems random but 1) he knows him from their time in the B1G, and 2) possibly knows him from their time as nba assistants. They’re both from Indianapolis and maybe they have an old/guy young guy relationship surrounding that fact. Seems ridiculous but technically plausible. Also, if Buckner and Dolson have that adversarial relationship, you know the Woody-Buckner camp is going to push someone that isn’t a Steven’s/May Dolson dream candidate. -

I don’t know what our two big lineups was, but it had to be about -12 in 15min. Coming out the second half with that lineup and Goode on the bench is flat out criminal. -

Leal getting taken from twice in a row is bad. But I don’t remember him ever being the primary ball handler before in his career. If you sub in Rice there for a couple possessions we probably win the game. -

Last week: Why did Woody call a TO, Rice had the ball in his hands! This week: Why didn’t Woody call a TO, Rice had the ball! Welp, I guess Woody showed us how foolish we are. He wasn’t going to win a game in either scenario! -

For all the offseason hoopla about rice and Carlyle, they sure are underwhelming. They give us just short of nothing. -

Yea. But that’s a bad stretch. I’m doing the whole post knight era which is more pathetic given the time span, imo. Just trash. Everyone involved should be ashamed. Nothing new really, but watching Woodson coach reminds me of that fact. -

Took Purdue going on a 10-1 run and a Reneau foul. Literally the dumbest coaching decision of the month is coming out of that halftime up five and going to your big lineup. -

Woody seriously thinks we are still in the NBA. In the NBA, a timeout there gets you to advance the ball to half court. In college The move is to inbound the ball as far up the court as you can and then immediately call a timeout. Then you do two things : 1) you eliminate their ability to foul because it is purely catch and shoot situation, and 2) you increase your odds of a successful play by about a 1000%. What a coaching crapfest at the end. -
