I see that Arizona Tommy snagged him another Euro. Senaglese native 7fter who is only 17 but been playing Euro ball. That guy loves scouting the Euros.

Any Leo Curtis news? I get the fit isn’t perfect this year but seems like a good pair with Sisley next year,

L’ville was an 8 seed and got beat by double digits by most good teams including getting trounced in the first round of the tourney. That’s certainly attainable with the roster we have. May and Pope did better jobs, so we’ll see how they build off of that this year. I expect that they do. But we’ll all expect CDD to do so in year 2 as well.

That’s was really just a simplistic way of complaining about Woody. There’s nothing wrong with running your offense through the post, especially if that’s where your best players are. Woody had much bigger problems, but people fixated on that. If DDV wants to run his offense through the post nobody will complain if he’s successful.

Knecht is a pretty interesting one because iirc most said they thought he could score but not defend in the SEC. But Barnes got him to play pretty solid defense.

IU had a top 26 SoS (via Kenpom) his last 3 years. I guess I never really got that complaint. It was way better than some of those watered down Crean years.

Only defense is that Woody took over a much tougher job/roster. Still Davis managed to get into the tourney the last two years. Not sure what Shaka would have to do for this guy to get higher grade. He’s got to be their most successful coach since McGuire. I don’t think Marquette would trade Shaka any more than ISU would trade Otz.

That’s how a market works. This is exactly how the market works in something like NFL free agency, which is basically an open bidding market with teams having variable amounts of money available. 1) You have to be the highest bidder, thus every signee is an “overpay” 2) it is always cheaper to keep your own players. Sometimes you get a hometown discount, but mostly because guys prefer not to move and you just wait to see what the market is and match it. It’s why even in the NFL you need to build through things like the draft. #2 is why guys like edey and Braden smith ultimately stay at Purdue despite fielding some huge offers. The best big time players don’t hit the market and it’s why teams go heavy after mid majors. People that were expecting a top ten NIL to translate to a top ten roster year one were simply unprepared for how the process would unfold. Teams that change coaches are at a disadvantage especially if they’re not bringing over a bunch of players from their old team. Apparently Dolson understood this and moved quickly to get CDD in early for a reason.

    New Basketball Staff Thread

I think historically I would say this type of reaction to assistants would a little over the top. Assistants come and go but generally the head guy reigned supreme. But in this new era of evaluating and recruiting out of the portal with thousands of players every year, I can start to see the value of an elite staff. Not so much on the coaching Xs and Os side, but on the player acquisition and deciding they’re worth aspect. Interesting staff by ol Coach Double D. Seems heavy on the recruiting side of things which is possibly optimal??
  10. Sure. But you can’t really explain why you’re in the thread talking about individual players. Or coaches for that matter. Why send a email discussing the quality of coach? How would that affect anything if we’re just cheering for IU? Why get on a message board at all? If everything is blandly interchangeable except for the institution, just turn on the tv in Nov and cheer for the faceless guys in IU jerseys on the floor, no?
  11. Why are you watching and firing off emails then? The kids made a lot of money last year, they’ll make more next year, and the year after that. Yet you’re still watching. Not only that I saw you telling people to be positive (lol) in the thread specifically dedicated to bringing in new players and paying them lots of money. Your own actions don’t actually correspond to your philosophy very well.

This isn’t empirically true and you’re setting yourself up for disappointment with unrealistic expectations. Most of the best rosters had a couple homegrown guys mixed in. You can’t poach those guys because schools use their NIL to keep them. The rest of the rosters have transfers that have been there for more than one year (that includes St. John’s and UConn) or in the case of Duke a stud frosh or two they’d been recruiting for several years. Michigan St and Purdue had nearly entirely homegrown rosters of their key players. You can’t replicate that in one year. The best you can do—or at least that’s been proven so far—with entirely new portal rosters is somewhere in that Lville/UM/UK range. And while those teams had some success none were near the top 10. You also had teams like Kansas and Arkansas follow your strategy with big splashy transfers. KU started ranked 1 and finished unranked and Arkansas would’ve too until they surprise made the S16. If anything, the former group that relied on mid major guys outperformed the latter group who spent on bigger named players. People can expect what they want but I haven’t seen a team yet that has been able to wholesale purchase an automatic top 25 roster in one year just because they had top money.

How many can you get on the floor at one time though? Gonna start a pg and then Tucker and Bailey at the 4/5. If Coneroy is the pg, he seems pretty switchable, but you can’t let Bailey and Tucker get switched onto bad matchups on the perimeter and killed in space. Remember when teams started doing that to Goode last year? With that said, it looks like if CDD were so inclined he could have a few subs come in and have a lineup that switches everything.

If I only looked at the offensive personnel I might think that too. Two problems with this idea of a fast paced, gunning team a la Alabama or UK last year: 1) To play the style of defense he seems to want to play, a super fast pace isn’t ideal. To play packline and protect the rim by stopping dribble penetration, you’ll generally want to get back and get set up and then let the shot clock be your friend. Last year at WVU they were super slow at 331 in tempo, which brings me to point #2… 2) Just looking at his teams historically they’ve been pretty middle of the pack in pace. I’d almost call them pace nuetral. Last year they were really slow and his first year at Drake they were just inside the top 100 in pace. None of this is meant to be critical of CDD. I’m just saying, I’m curious what he does. If he does what he did last year, it’ll be the polar opposite of what everyone here expects. And if he does what everyone here is saying they expect it’ll be a pre big departure from what he’s generally done.

What do you think he’s trying to do? I could make an educated guess, but I wouldn’t feel real confident in it. But then again, I haven’t paid as much attention to the portal as some of you guys.

    2025-2026 IU Roster

All things being equal, I’d probably like to have the talent and experience that makes outsiders want to rank the team. But I guess I can see a little value in coming in under the radar.

2025-26 B1G Home and Away Games

Yea, but that means we should be able to hold serve at home. And if we can pickup a couple on the road that aren’t as hard like Rutgers or USC we’d finish the year out with a winning conference record. That’s probably the schedule you wouldn’t want if you were trying to win the league but is a pretty good one for a coach in year 1. Nobody’s going to be too upset when we lose at tough places on the road.

I did and he said he was honored to be one of Moyes 10 career blocks. He also said he wouldn’t advise going into the ‘26 season with 6’3” guard as your rim protector. Nice guy, that Boozer.

You’re not suggesting that AJ Moye was a “rim protector” are you? Maybe I’m reading that wrong…lol.

That’s not explaining it in the least. Houston can get away with a lack of size primarily because they have elite defenders littering their roster and play like the proverbial “dawgs” that just maul people defensively and gang rebound like their life depends on it. As much as I dislike Sampson, that is his specialty and very few coaches succeed in replicating that. He also self selects for those types of players. Houston slowed the game down to a crawl this year and had plus athletes and plus defenders flying all over the place. The idea of kids like Tucker Devries replicating that is kind of funny. And the scouting report on guys like Miles, Bailey and Wilkerson don’t exactly lend themselves to being those types of players either (although I have hope that CDD will get them to succeed defensively, in his own way). So no, you can’t just declare “we’re gonna be like Houston” (which is the furthest thing in the world from run n gun, which you cite later for IU) and hand wave away issues with the roster construction. I’ll put the disclaimer on here a second time as to not upset people: It’s ultimately fine if next year’s roster is less than perfect; I don’t expect CDD to turn IU into championship contenders year 1.

Nobody has really explained what a “modern style of play is” and how that equals not needing a good big. Just because Woody was stuck in the past and loved bigs it doesn’t mean they aren’t important. Good bigs are still dominant at all levels, including the current best player in the world. Florida had multiple guys play the center spot who were really good this year. Before that Uconn had Clingon and Sanogo. Purdue has went 4th, 3rd, 1st, 1st, 3rd in the B1G mostly by dominating the paint. Michigan State won the conference this year and absolutely sucked at shooting 3’s but they attacked the paint relentlessly. The truth is you need both good players in the post and on the perimeter. You can’t win with just guards. IU’s problem is that they rarely ever have both. And the last two times that we did (Yogi and Bryant and Oladipo and Zeller) we won the Big Ten despite what I would consider pretty mediocre coaching. You can’t just go into a season with a giant hole in your roster and declare you are playing some new way and expect it will all work out. I mean we CAN do that, but it will have predictable results. (With that said, if that happens next year it’s not the end of the world, imo, since it’s year 1 of CDD building his roster.)

I’m too old to really care about that. Reflexively I agree with you. Then I ask myself, “what the hell do I know about social media?” I would be fine if Indiana just embargoed everything and anything involving Dakich.

    2025-2026 IU Roster

I disagree it was poorly constructed. He got a top center, a top pg, a well ranked off guard, and a good shooter off the bench. All things we needed. It was, however, poorly coached. As many of us expected. If CDD can’t coach them up with the best of them he’ll eventually be sent packing too.

I disagree with this. Setting his IU connections aside Goode would represent one of the very few players on the roster that have played and won at the high major level in a role requiring significant minutes. Add in his appreciation for IU and a year here under his belt and I think he’d be a value-add as a 5th year senior.
