Barnes won as much or more at Texas as he has at Tenn. then he fell off hard. Hell we basically wanted Knight out when he did the same and Knight had 3 titles to his name. Shaka was bad at Texas. 3/6 years in the tournament. 6 years was probably a gift to him. But at worst he was a distraction on campus until spring ball. IU admin is patient…to a fault, imo. The fans and media are not. Literally nobody cares about basketball in Austin. Tom Crean took 10x the crap from fans than Shaka did. You’ll never have 15,000 fans booing you at a home game at UT like Woody, Davis, Archie and Crean have. Indy talk radio will ride your butt after every loss. Austin..you’ll be lucky if they’ll report your scores. That’s what wears on people and their families. And that’s what they are talking about.

I mean…he’s either producing in a big time conf. at a school with more home fans than IU or he’s at a small school who would be elevated by IUs resources. He can’t really be both. He’s sort of neither fish nor fowl in this one. I can see why opinions vary wildly. For all the “B level” candidates I think I like watching his teams about as well as any. -

He acquitted himself well in the tourney those years so I imagine IU fans would be happy with that for a little while. Best case for McDermont is he’s a Shaka type thing where he either learned from his initial failure and/or found a job that is a better fit. Still I’d want to know why he failed at ISU and why that’s been alleviated at Creighton and how that translates to IU. Success become expectations at a place like IU and making the second weekend like he has at Creighton will quickly become “why hasn’t he made a Final Four?” And I’d want to know he’s capable of that at IU. -

There’s less pressure in the sense literally nobody cares about basketball besides your bosses. You live in a good sized city and can do whatever you want without hassle. And there are plenty of resources. Shaka failed there he wasn’t pushed out. And honestly Barnes kind had a Knight situation where his own success dictated first round losses every year weren’t good enough. Depending on your personality, I can see it. Kind of like how Lincoln Riley left OU for USC. Leaving an actual fishbowl job for the anonymity of a big city. For many coaches IU is more appealing because the stakes are higher.

I think people gave you pretty good answers. I’d also point out revenue sharing. That is, imo, a bigger future unknown and could possibly exceed NIL in importance. I have no idea if Drew is considering all this or not. But I wouldn’t want to be the basketball coach of a non-B1G/SEC in Texas of all places having to lobby the admin every year against the football program for my share of an already small pool of money relative to the Big 2 conf schools. Texas Tech would fall in this category too. But McCasland will just wait for Texas or A/M it seems. Drew is at least from Indiana, thus the hopeful extrapolation. IU, UK, and a few others are in the exact opposite position: strong basketball allocations relative to the football programs from a very big pool most likely. -

I kind of doubt random “insiders” have much info at this point. Any reasonable person could’ve made that list from reading this board. In fact, the inclusion of McCollum makes me think that’s likely where it came from. Interesting counterfactual. He also wouldn’t have had the timing of his son, who I thought dragged those UCLA teams down a little. Kid could shoot (duh) but couldn’t guard a lamppost. Lots of talent on those teams too, but it seems everyone can recruit to UCLA. -

I mean…you led off with Holtmann—a complete nonstarter—in the second spot. AI or not, that’s not going to generate much discussion, only disgust. My excitement for IU basketball would be pretty low. Only Turgeron would have me less excited. I’m not a Brownell hater either. Very solid coach. But he would be a very meh hire that would probably finally put the IU fandom in its place as a middling program. -

Ok. Steve Alford is in based on his New Mexico stint then. I think that is too wide a net to cast for the stat to be meaningful but one can use it however they like. -

That’s how I’ve been looking at it. I just don’t think it disqualifies too many likely candidates, if any, that are controversial. OTOH….Otzelberger would be out. Tommy Llyod would be out. McCasland would be out. Also, Scott Drew was like 5th or 6th on valpos list in his only season after being left a handful of starters from a really good team his dad had the year before. I don’t think anyone foresaw him doing what he did at Baylor. But he qualifies based on his time at Baylor. -

Brownell will most likely set it again this year. But again…depending on what data set you use and whether or not ties count, he already has it at Clemson. Billy Gillispie had it at A&M when he was hired at UK. And Turgereon would’ve been second (just like Coach K and Hurley!!) when he left for Maryland. Shaka had it at TCU when he left for, and subsequently flamed out at, Texas. Just not a great stat for predictive value, imo. Otoh, if you’re candidate can’t muster up the best season in history at a lower school (or second best, at least) it seems like there won’t be any championships in your future. With that said, Crean was second on marquettes list when he left for Indiana. -

We went over this stat a few hundred pages back. Under this stat, Brad Brownell qualifies. Lots of small school coaches who couldn’t hack it in the big times would. I **kind of** like it as an “eliminator” stat, but it isn’t dispositive. Under this stat you would have eliminated Coach K (the most prolific coach since Wooden) and Hurley and possibly Roy Williams (depending on your stance on ties). That’s a whole lot of championships missed to put a lot of weight in that heuristic. The stat kind of just tells you something you already know to be true: great coaches at the highest level were also really good coaches at a lower level. -

He’s not a good candidate but… Steve Lavin, Steve Alford, Kenny Payne, Kevin Ollie, Matt Doherty, and a couple others have been hired by those schools. So …yea, Brownell isn’t exactly out of the realm of possibilities. -
