He publicly stepped away from the limelight and a few of the last pictures of him out in public his appearance was kind of unkempt, so that’s not surprising. She was his sole caretaker I guess so when she went it was probably a rough go at the end for him. Very sad. That guy really had some great roles in some great movies even though he wasn’t the biggest “star “ of his time.

After the last 25 years I could never put that much confidence in the IU administration. I’d just pray he doesn’t melt the whole program down like Sampson.

The good news is that any coach that could last here twenty years will in all likelihood win big in his first 5. There’s no real on the job training at IU. Our biggest mistakes are generally believing the opposite. Much time has been wasted giving coaches extra years hoping they would become something they are not. We’ll probably know if the next coach will be successful after a couple years. How long IU keeps them after that is above our pay grade, unfortunately. -

How does one go about hiring the next Bo Ryan then? -

I don’t think mover-blocker is what slows them down. More of a defensive/transition thing. It would be a question I’d have for him. That’s great if you’re at Washington st or uva where you’re a perpetual underdog. Allowing your team to run with Carolina and duke is a recipe for disaster. I would hope that at IU he would be more like Jay Wrights teams where they were slow most of the times but other times he’d let them push the pace a little. In any event I’m not sure most fans would miss what amounts to 4 or 5 possessions a game if we were winning at that level. But it is all moot, as he’s not coming to IU by anyone’s account. He could make someone a nice coach next hiring cycle. Maybe an Ohio State or something. -

Yep. I would still prefer to build that way. The difference being we can come in and offer guys contracts, have them signed, and coaches can go on vacation in June and July not having to worry about some 5* going someplace else because calipari sidled up to them at an aau tournament. The HC will still be involved but they’ll actually have some real off time. They also won’t have to start recruiting 15 yr olds. Not at IU, anyways. Because we’ll be able to make strong @$$ offers (lol) later in the game. -

Also, I don’t know how many people ever have had a job where you’re literally “on” 24/7/365. It’s exhausting. And that’s what I imagine recruiting in the old system was like. Literally at the mercy of 16 and 17 year old kids all year long. NBA presents its own challenges, but being able to recharge your batteries by taking several stress free months off in the summer is worth it’s weight in gold. Also you’re just coaching. No other BS. If college can become like the pros in terms of schedule and responsibilities with similar salaries, you’ll definitely see a renewed interest in the job. -

I’ve thought about this. It seems NBA coaches have a nice break from after the draft until the start of camp. Whereas college coaches were historically always recruiting. It was a grind. Woody had the money to successfully retain players and even land a 5 star almost every year. He just stinks at actual coaching. IU, like always, had awful timing. I think in a couple years this will become obvious. It’s up to Dolson to sell it now. But it should be the crux of the pitch to guys like Stevens, Donovan, Bennett, etc… Essentially, you get all the good things about coaching college—including the money—but we’ll give you a solid month off in July where you don’t have to do jack. The recruiting coordinator or whatever can take control because you’ve already set your team through the portal. With IU’s luck we’ll get some schlub and this will become obvious next year and UNC or somebody will nail it. -

That’s my impression after watching a handful of games. So I am nobody’s expert on Otz. I think he’d be successful. I think a guy like that could definitely pull something on the continuum Sampson to Jim Boheim and be here 20-30 yrs and maybe win one title with a handful of FFs. If that’s even possible at IU. I do appreciate teams that play hard. Like 90th percentile of effort in D1. -

The irony being Stevens first boss and mentor leaving Boston and returning to Utah to try and resurrect them. -
4 years ago this guy was the midmajor darling everyone thought was a can’t miss. Cincy is historically an above average program and he’s pretty much fallen flat on his face. Have to wonder if he’s gone at the end of the year.

Smith cooked their little pg so bad. Alabama couldn’t get stops to get close. Probably Purdue’s best win.

Michigan fouls twice in a row with under ten on the clock. Dusty May almost has an aneurysm on live tv.

They ended the half with the vaunted 3 big lineup. Woody is so jealous!

Nobody said “every” midmajor coach. But midmajors are risky and low majors like Stu posted, even more . Nobody should know that better than IU fans. We have run the gamut from Knight to Archie. The failures out number the successes probably in the neighborhood of 10:1. There’s not going to be one stat or profile that’s dispositive. If there were it’d be easy and anybody can do it. You have to have an AD that is a top basketball mind or lucky as ****. Fred Glass was a basketball moron. We’ll find out about Dolson soon enough. The only way to tilt the odds in your favor outside of that is to hire a proven P5 guy. For IUs expectations that list is short: Drew, Bennett, Wright, Donovan, Stevens…That’s about it. The odds are really small for each one but thankfully you only need one. If Dolson doesn’t know basketball lets hope like hell he’s a big game closer. If he’s neither a top basketball evaluator or closer, let’s pray he has a horseshoe up his @$$. -

Indiana is the flagship program and sucks. Other conferences recruit more talent. I do agree with you about last night, though. We got home cooked. It happens. You need to be 2-5 points better on the road in this league. -

I know we have built McDermont up around here but I think we can all agree there’s a vast gulf of difference between him and Coach K? Also does anyone know a better word than “vast?“ I’m in desperate need of it. -
