Candidate Thread: Becky Hammon (San Antonio Spurs Assistant)
str8baller replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Another reason not to hire her is having to put up with ridiculous missives like this. She’s not even remotely qualified, but anyone pointing that out “can’t handle a female coach.” Maybe she can take over for Ol Roy if your tarheel friends are so high on her. -

He’s the exact type of coach to do that. Anyone wanting Becky Hammon over a guy like Woodson ought to have their head examined but only as a perfunctory step to the lobotomy. -
I see it as three main “buckets” of current issues. 1. pay- I think the likeness thing will take this off the table, and quite frankly I’m fine with that. These guys should be able to profit off if their own image and/or fame. 2. Grades - I’ll never support a diploma mill type situation. Otoh, I get that some of these kids aren’t scholars. As long as they are actually required to do something towards a real degree, work at it (even with heavy tutoring), and learn some life skills along the way I can live with it. 3. Character- I’ll never put up with and support a program that coddles borderline violent criminals because they can play ball. Indiana has been really lucky to have a long history of pretty high character guys. The Zellers, VOs, JJs, Damon Baileys, Chaneys, Hendersons, etc... We could go further back too. Some of our best players have been our best character guys. I do not think we should, nor have to, deviate from that standard to have a good team.

If you were a ohio state fan you wouldn’t have wanted urban meyer either then, right? Seemed to work out ok for them. -

People are really understanding the thug comment. Not saying it’s right, but IU will have to have a diversity and inclusion committee to “start a conversation” about his possibly racist comments. Articles will be written. Old articles will be drudged up about how IU was racist for treating Mike Davis bad. At best he’s maybe suspended for his first game or something. Go look at what happened to mcdermont this year. At worst it tanks recruiting—that and him being 90 yrs old—and dooms the whole thing before it gets off the ground. Just the world we live in today. And I say this as someone who really likes the guy and did all the way back to his WVU days. -
That’s life for everyone. Izzo was an assistant. Matta was at a mm when he went to osu. K from Army. Bennett from one of the worst p5 schools. Howard unproven legacy with no experience in college. Self to Kansas and beilien to Michigan were good pulls from good P5 schools but they’re rare. Roy Williams was a special case to his alma mater. IU pulled Sampson from a solid p5 situation and Crean from a good MM situation. Archie was the hot MM guy four years ago. Nothing wrong with iu except the people hiring coaches.

Candidate Thread: Chris Beard (Texas Tech)

Peep his kenpom numbers. Offense has been an issue. With that said, I wouldn’t be mad if he came. Solid candidate. -
You can get whatever you want if you’re willing to chase fads. Chasing recency bias over proven success is what the IU administration has done for two decades and why we’re currently looking again. The coach du jour is often available but usually never the best option.

Yea, had a TO too. Otoh, two missed ft’s and two missed layups or we’re talking about how great beard is for coming back and winning. Fickle game. -

Entertaining game. Both teams defend hard. Didn’t see anything offensively that gets me real jazzed about either guy. Ball screen, drive and kick. Same thing every other coach runs. -
Bro... you coach college ball and don’t know how good Matta is? Also, look around. Game hasn’t changed except maybe for the worse Xs and Os wise. Guys from the 80s and 90s still dominating: Izzo, Pitino, K, Williams, Few, Tony Bennett running stuff his dad came up with in the 80s, etc... Cmon man...
-
Yep. And I hate to talk ill of the man, but Stevens isn’t above failure either. He’s never recruited the high major, 1-and-done scene. For example, had Archie gotten a all-big level 4yr starter at guard instead of Romeo, he’s probably still the coach today. Stevens got pretty lucky with the Howard and Hayward recruitments. And Stevens at the pro level has had his problems with the exact type of 1-and-done talent (eg. kyrie, tatum, jb) he’d have to navigate at IU. All candidates have risks. You hire the best you can.
-
Lol... I can remember when he was the hot young coach and all the message board arguments about firing Davis early to get Matta.

Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)

.675 at TT. .550 in conf. Not bad, but not as impressive when you back the minor leagues out. For comparison Matta was like .733/.655 at OSU. -

Can’t wait for the winner of this game to be named the definite knee-jerk reaction best available IU coaching candidate. Loser is worse than Moser! -
People are worried about Mattas health and want a 75 yr old man run out of his last job for making racially insensitive comments? I’d love to hear the rationale on that one.
-
We’re not going to know that. Only Matta knows. And dolsons job to vet. We wouldn’t even offer if both weren’t convinced 100%. So if he’s hired feel confident they both are convinced he’s healthy. speculation otherwise is pointless.
-
Agree. Absolute home-run if we’re getting the same guy that was at osu. Homerun.

This guy is a fool and trolling IU fans for attention. Not sure why some are intent on giving it to him. -
Most National media guys are basketball idiots and few have sources. They’re probably reading this board and regurgitating stuff.
-
He’s 1b to Stevens 1a IF healthy. In fact his floor is higher than Stevens by virtue of actually having navigated major div recruiting before. And he managed it well! I think Stevens ceiling is higher which is why he was the golden child.

Depends on how much he values history, recruiting upside, etc.... If UT offered Tom Allen $10 mil per to coach football don’t you think he’d at least think about it? -

You say that now. But when Matta, musselman and fife publicly turn us down you’ll be building the moser shrine in front of assembly hall. -

Great leader of men. Gotta think if his xs and os were better they’d never have been stuck in Egypt in the first place! -
No... we’re talking about if he’s a respected basketball coach by some of the best coaches in the world. He is. Nobody is seriously considering a 63yr old with no college experience for the IU job. You can separate the two things. Just like some don’t want him here, most of the candidates IU has left couldn’t get an interview for most of the jobs Woodson has had.
