General Coach Candidate News
str8baller replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
This is Indiana. If he wins championships not only will people be ok with it, they’ll be emulating it with their kids grade school teams on the weekends. There will be a whole epidemic of youth coaches wearing white shirts, mono-colored ties, and yelling at the other sideline that their action sucks. -

He took all their players with him to Drake. -

Brownells teams have went farther in the tourney than Barnes’ too. Ultimately those stats are supposed to reflect how crappy of a job Clemson is. To wit, Barnes left for Texas and immediately had them rolling. I, like you, find it unpersuasive. I would probably rather the dice with a guy like Collins if that’s the route we’re going. -

Brownell did set the record for most wins in a season at Clemson, if you buy that stat. He also has as much, or more, tourney success than Barnes albeit over a much longer time frame. With that said, he doesn’t move the needle for me. At all. -

It’s called “poetic license.” :) And that wasn’t necessarily aimed at you, as several people have mentioned it. Either way, his offenses at Creighton don’t pop off the stat sheet compared to his predecessor(s). If there’s something there Xs and Os wise that distinguishes his time at Creighton , I’m all ears. -

I always like to see if the stats back up these little narratives. In this case I’m not seeing. Ppg is pretty similar for McDermont in the years before and after Huss joined. Efficiency is much the same. Maaasybe a slight uptick but I’d have to pull all the numbers to be sure. From just eye balling their kenpom ranks I don’t see much difference. His two years at high point are impressive. If you want to nab a hot lower major coach, then fine. But I wouldn’t put a lot of stock in the “Offensive genius behind McDermontt “ narrative without more evidence. -
When you’re right, you’re right. Fun game.

If you can’t intergrate a McNeely into your system, you actually might not be cut out for a big time job. Hurley runs great stuff and has no problem integrating freshman like mcneely and castle. -

Yes. It took pro football and basketball a while to figure out it’s too much work for one guy. I see big time college sports heading that direction. -

1) You have to get him a GM type to handle all that. Have to. Take your salary savings and get the best person possible. 2) Weirdly, I would think Rice and maybe even Reneau are decent building blocks. Reneau can literally only be successful in defense that values positioning and contests. He’s not going to be a shot blocker or a big that can switch onto guards. If McCollum is this great pg whisperer Rice would seem to be a decent start. -

The article you excerpted from made it seem like he got a lot of lower level job offers, which makes sense. He obviously accepted the Drake offer. If IU can’t land a D2 coach with one (great) year in the MVC, everyone needs fired. Sheesh… For reference last year out of the MVC here were the coaching moves: Shertz to SLU and Devries to WVU. Devries prospects were almost certainly bolstered by the fact that his son would be coming along. -

Top jobs don’t come open very often so quite obviously it doesn’t happen very often just by the nature of things. And McD coming from Creighton would be bigger than all the mid major guys and absolutely qualify so thanks for confirming the 2/4 number. It also proves that getting those non-championship guys from P5 schools comes with its own risk a la Crean. -

Probably because it happens quite a bit including 2 out of the last 4 IU coaching hires. -
I don’t hate it. I actually get nervous when I see something like Oats shot chart that is so dogmatic it seems if they eschew even good (ie wide open) shots from the midrange.

I always thought IU could spend their way out of it, and a top-tier coach would come. I guess maybe not....maybe we've just exhausted the conversation, and we'll get good news in the end?....I hope. As I’ve said from the beginning, IU could spend its way out of it but it takes a top tier talent recruiter as well. I’ve pointed to Alabama hiring Saban. Go read about it if you want to see how to land a white whale. Or UNC finally getting Roy. You can’t just do it with a checkbook. It’s a prerequisite but not enough by itself. We’ll see what Dolson is made of soon enough. -
I mean…I hope that’s the author editorializing and not something McCollum said because it is really dumb and easily disproven by a cursory scan through Kenpom.

That would test the faith in my IU fandom. There’s enough data on McD at Creighton to think he could be successful here. He’s also 60 so if stumbles out of the gate you would hope IU could pull the plug quickly instead of do the ol’ Davis/Crean routine of “he needs more time!” -

His time at ISU is almost Archie bad. I say almost because ISU is a harder place to win than IU. But if he comes here and puts up results closer to his first big stint than his second it will definitely be a fail. The thing about McDermont is you have to believe that ultimately there was something fundamentally that was wrong with his approach at Iowa State that he identified, course corrected, and can avoid repeating at another power five job that isn’t Creighton. And I say that as someone who is fairly bullish on McDermont. I personally like watching his teams, aesthetically speaking. -

Archie won the A10 twice, no? With his own players even. Seemed to be on the rise. -

Largely the same reason his floor is lower: less data, means a wider variance in outcomes. -

Cronin’s floor is way higher. Otoh, questions about his personality and offense may make it seem like his ceiling is below what IU ultimately wants. McCollum is the exact other end of that spectrum. Collins probably is somewhere in the middle. If those candidates are on the same “level” for Dolson to choose from a lot of it may boil down to how risk tolerant he is and what the behind the scenes politics look like. -
I think people are looking at his raw numbers and forgetting to factor their slower pace in. According to Torvik they rank 234th on 3pt rate, which is pace neutral. For reference, Indiana ranks 316th. Izzos, Tommy Lloyds, Fews, Selfs, and Randy Bennetts teams shoot less 3’s as a percentage of their overall FG attempts. What they do to compensate is get a ton of looks (comparative to pace) around the rim, ranking just behind Mays and Bennetts squads and right ahead of Oats, Hurleys and Buzz Williams teams. Again, according to Torviks site.

Yea, I thought about adding that and giving credit to UK fans for their ability to read statistics and process nuances. Then I decided that’s crazy talk, and he’s just in his honeymoon phase with them. Lol -
I was surprised to see them so high in Off Rebounding. That probably helps keep their pace down a little. FWIW, 59 possessions (adjusted) on Kenpom is pretty much dead on where Bennetts title team in Virginia and Bo Ryan’s runner up squad was at. Both were incredibly efficient offenses, though.
