How do you explain the first ten-fifteen minutes where we were winning? Seems odd that some mysterious mental issues crept up while they were on the floor and we were all watching. But we’re all just speculating, so I won’t discount the possibility.

I didn’t participate in the grade the season thread cause I don’t really know what that means. But I’ll say that Woody seems to say the right things, imo, with regard to what needs done. The thought of a little more off the ball motion and perimeter orientation (just taking a stab at what he means by “style “), better shooting and more athletic defenders on the wing has me excited. If we can keep that top league defense (or close to it) and get top ~40 Kenpom offense, then we’ll compete near the top of the B1G and have a seed giving us a chance to make a run in the tourney. To that end, seems like if we’re bringing in transfers we want another stab at a 3/d type wing and a big who can rebound and help defend a little.

Well yea. We played bad against a team who was favored to beat us and played well. Difference is our defense often kept us in close competitive games most of the year, and we didn’t seem to have the energy to muster that level of defense. Sans the travel stuff maybe we keep it closer, but would’ve still lost. XJ had a great BTT but reverted back to his old form. We got nothing tangible (I do think they tried hard) out of Kopp and Stewart or Phin or Durr down the stretch. We played pretty poorly Tuesday (minus TJD), but nobody wanted to talk about because Wyoming had a bad night too, wasn’t as good as us, and we won. Recency bias and emotion had everyone overrating how we did on Tuesday and now have everyone mad about last night. We weren’t any less prepared than any of these high seeds that blow games to nobodies. It happens in the tourney.

Funny to hear some people spout off about stuff they don’t quite understand. This has been a known issue to affect play in the NBA forever. Gamblers have been favoring it in for years. The NBA has increased the length of the season twice (I believe) to try and address the issue. In other words, yes NBA players “can” do it, but almost everyone that follows the sport understands it is detrimental to a team’s play.

God willing he gets some horses in here. Then we can criticize his coaching a little more. There are things I like and dislike. At the end of the day, this team was not talented on the offensive end. So he crafted them into a good defensive team and they got better as the year went along. I think that’s a net positive. Let’s hope we can build off of it.

I agree. I think the truth is that you need both, though. Zeller/oladipo were smart players but also exceptional athletes. Same for Cheaney/henderson, isiah/turner, etc… It’s frustrating we’ve went about a decade without putting together such a roster.

Bro…there isn’t an offense in the world that works with our shooters. We could run Knights 3-2 motion to perfection but we don’t have one guy to knock down those shots. Even in the lean years we had a bailey, evans, guyton type player. We have no one remotely close to that. We need a talent upgrade. Maybe woody gets outclassed on the sidelines then, but you have to have a scorer or two.

Purdue has a 100+ ranked defense. Unless they just get lucky, they’re going down and probably early. And I don’t hate them as much as most. But they’re flawed kind of the opposite way we are.
