    Fife on Woodson

That’s on the IU administration. By most accounts they set it up this way thinking it would be a positive when it was a negative. They hired Matta under the same concept. A major whiff on all fronts. It goes up there with the Sampson and Davis hires as “anyone competent should’ve known better but IU didn’t.” And still…somehow the Archie hire produced the worst results. Lol…

That’s where I sort of land. Dane styles himself as an old school college basketball traditionalist reminiscent of his mentors Knight and Izzo. Woody is obviously a pro guy and where he spent the majority of his basketball life. It was a bad match and unfortunately for IU fans I’m not sure either approach is all that relevant to today’s game.

All of that is in the box score posted— Pace, 3s, and Shot distribution are all quantifiable stats.

Seems hard to believe. 90% of it was public knowledge. The rest would’ve been known from simple due diligence on his end. All he had to do was ask about Crawford and Bassett. Because once he couldn’t keep that backcourt together it was a complete rebuild anyways.

lol..what? What do you suppose I’m not believing? I simply posted how the 3 game statistical profile would have stacked up for fun. I have no idea how you would judge schemes and style without having watched them. I thought maybe you went. A couple mins of highlights aren’t going to tell you much more than the box scores in that regard.

Maybe if you were there. Wasn’t televised so almost nobody saw it.

Just because it’s fun to extrapolate from small data sets: 29 attempts from 3 per game would put us in the top 10-20 teams in the nation in 3’s per game. ~29% from 3 would put us in the bottom 10-20 teams in the nation in 3pt %. For reference, Central Arkansas shot similar splits last year from 3 and were the 349th most efficient team in the country…lol. We’ll need to make more to be a top 20 offense. But in fairness, had Wilkerson not had a really off game one time and Devries shot better, those numbers probably look more like we want. We also got to the line 20+ times a game, converted 46% of our FG’s, and had 71assists over 3 games, so I am sure our overall efficiency was better than our 3pt percentage indicates. For reference, teams like Duke, Florida, and Alabama that shot high volumes of 3’s last year hit around 35-39% of their 3’s. Also, nobody averaged over 20 assists a game last year. I would suspect that if this team can get that 3pt% into the above range playing that style they have a shot at the top 20 offense some have mentioned. But then again we’re talking Puerto Rico basketball in August, so….

Sounds about like an average-ish high major team in terms of talent level. Of course, there are several other variables like coaching, cohesion, etc…that we’ll never know about that determine how tough of an opponent they actually were. But a nice opponent to measure a new team against in live competition. Also, I saw Ants previous tweet and I’m pretty sure this one was in response to all the whiner Purdue and Illinois teams saying that Mega Superbet sucked. Ant seemed to think it was a pretty solid showing by IU.

True, but the guy in the clip was decidedly not in good position. He closed out late and hard and got beat into the paint. What I thought was fairly athletic was not only did he get back in the play to contest the shot but he blocked it. Maybe the offensive player was small and slow…tough to tell from a single clip.

Whomever missed that close out at about :25 but recovered to get the blocked looked fairly athletic in doing so. Don’t think it was Bailey so either Sisley or Tucker. Also Bailey has looked pretty agile in the couple offensive clips I’ve seen of him. Maybe the concerns of how athletically overmatched we’ll be are little overblown? Would be nice anyways…

International exhibitions and all that….but you have to wonder if Sisley might contribute actual rotation mins this season.

I’ve been the same. Think it’s 25 years of futility mixed with not knowing anyone coming back. That’s not a knock against CDD but just the state of things. But I’ll reads the recaps tomorrow morning. And when Nov rolls around I’ll be excited to see what these guys can do. Doubt I can stay interested in another failure very long, though.

Hey GOLFman…football season also means the end of golf season ‘round these parts. Don’t wish the summer away! :) Also…somehow it’s going to be 90 degrees out and it is an IU basketball game day!

Is IU playing the fever in the next exhibition game? I’ve got IU by 80 and Ristic using his eastern euro aura (as the kids say) to score a date with the hot enforcer chick.

    2025-2026 IU Roster

Someone would have to define what “get out and run” means in that context for it to tell us much. The tails of the distribution on tempo get kind of long due to big outliers at the top and bottom. For example, Arizona and UF were pretty fast teams ranking about 50th-ish each. But both of those teams were much closer to the Div1 average in pace than they were to #1 Alabama. Similarly slow 300th-ish teams like Purdue and UCLA were much closer to average than they were to last placed Drake. So will we look like Alabama? I doubt it. Could we average a couple more possessions than the Div 1 avg, pushing us well into the top 100 in pace and play at a speed closer to Arizona/Maryland/UF? Sure. And that would constitute a fairly big departure from CDD’s previous teams.

I’m interested in seeing all of it. I can try and make some educated guesses on what we’ll see but I wouldn’t feel confident in any of them. There’s just not much in a consistent analytic footprint for CDD. I think I would agree with you though that we’ll be close to upper 1/3rd in tempo. Just a hunch.

Guy Mark-michel (or whatever) was french i believe, but terrible. Muzjinivic was the last decent euro I remember.

    2025-2026 IU Roster

Creighton under McDermont has had some good defensive teams. Oddly he kind of goes back and forth on which side is better… like CDD’s teams in terms of what is more efficient, offense or defense. So I’m not even sure what that’d mean to look like Creighton next year. It could be anything, from an analytics perspective, so long as they’re well coached. Worst Creighton has been is 44th on D in the last 5 years, but that was last year when they were 32nd in offense and only managed a 9 seed. In 2022 Creighton was 112 in OffE and 19 in DefE. That would completely subvert expectations if we looked like that next year. Similarly, I doubt we look like Alabama because of tempo. Alabama hasn’t been less than 14th in AdjTempo the last 4 yrs and they were 1st last year. CDDs teams were pretty avg-ish in tempo. WVU was 331st last year. That’s UW/Virginia levels of tempo. I really wont be surprised by anything next year, as there isn’t much of an analytic footprint to match up with the conventional wisdom on this years roster. I subscribe to the philosophy of “you are what you can guard” so if you’re the 5 and can’t guard other team’s primary post, then it’s hard to be effective in big mins, imo. I have watched as much of Bailey as I have Sisley and Dorn, so it’s all academic to me. I doubt (hope) CDD would recruit a guy that he didn’t think could defend his position at this level, so I’m not worried. I’m just stating that is the prevailing concern, and the reports from the single practice didn’t do anything to make that concern less of one. I mean…it’s the preseason. I hope Bailey is the next Bill Russell and have no data points to say one way or the other.

To play devils advocate, I think the concern is the physicality doesn’t allow his skills to translate. The kid from Ball State had the opposite, but similar, problem where the speed at this level was too fast. I’ve watched Wisconsin get by with finesse bigs for years so I’m less worried. But you can imagine how teams like MSU or Rutgers might maul some weaker bigs. I take no position in the debate though, because I’ve never seen Bailey play.

I thought Cupps handled himself adequately given the situation he was thrown into. I was really annoyed he didn’t fix his jumper in the offseason though. He should be a rotation guy at OSU. Not sure what I think about the Enright / Coneroy backcourt. On one hand I’d hope for a little more shooting. Otoh, it would go a long way to adding a little defensive punch. Either way, playing that small we’ll have to rebound like crazy.

An Xavier Johnson that was a better decision maker, both on and off the court, would be a pretty good player.

He might be the first “normal” coach hire we’ve had since Knight was fired.
