General Coach Candidate News

Really? They’ve been a protected seed once since Alford was there. 0 conf titles. One tourney title since then. Any time before that and you start having to figure in our titles and FF’s. Fran’s their longest serving coach since dr tom and he’s never made a S16 -

I have thought about this some and it is just speculation, but I wonder if some of it isn’t Bloomington. It has to be about the smallest B1G town. When you’re talking about moving your family they are probably thinking about restaurants, schools, nightlife, shopping , etc… Bloomington is really small and insular compared to a lot of other places. It takes the right fit. Reportedly Woodys wife spent most of her time in Atlanta. -

I wouldn’t either. I think he was their immediate second right after Dusty bailed. He also had a mid major resume equal to Devries and mcCollum combined. Similarly, people keep forgetting Mark Pope was a P5 coach in one of the top 3 basketball conferences when Kentucky hired him. Kentucky pulls a P5 coach almost every cycle except the year they got Calipari. I’m not sure how far down their list they got, but they aim high. -

Wait…you don’t think guys like Bill Carmody and Tex Winter are good basketball coaches? If you are who your record says you are, Carmodys best season at Princeton is better than McCollums and a bunch of other candidates bandied around here. -

The thing you have to wonder about Collin’s is if he can come here and leverage IU’s resources in recruiting the way he and K did at Duke when he was recruiting there. If he could do that and build out rosters like Knight did with the best kids from Indiana and the contiguous states with the occasional nation-wide 5* like K did, he could build a monster. You fill out the rest of the roster with the Barnhizers, McIntoshes, and Leals of the state. I mean any coach could theoretically do that, but I say Collin’s specifically because he’s lived it up close with K, has the regional recruiting network already, and we know he has the coaching chops to succeed in the B1G. He’s my one dark horse candidate that I can talk myself into returning IU to its former glory not only in accomplishments but in “style.” (FWIW, my only other 3 are Stevens, Wright and Bennett. I think success under the other coaches is possible but looks and feels different) -

Just that. That’s the world we live in. UF has about no shot to lure away a player from IU that IU wants to keep. IU could pull one off UF. Just like we did to Arizona. And Wash St and Stanford. And Illinois. Or Duke did to national runner up Purdue. Just the money. That’s all that matters. To the coaches who haven’t figured it out yet, they will. If they’re having trouble they can pick up the phone and ask Jay Wright or Tony Bennett. Or Matt Painter. Yesterday’s success won’t keep your kids around. Just the money. Hell even the SEC football teams are learning the lesson after back to back B1G titles with some expensive UM and OSU teams. If IU doesn’t screw this hire up they’re sitting in a similar spot with their current spending levels on basketball. -

That’s quite the spectrum of candidates. Is Wade that much higher than Devries when you factor everything in? He doesn’t meet our criteria as best ever at LSU because the notorious Dale Brown had several seasons better than Wades best. -

That’s doubtful unless they can get their spend up. I really wish I would’ve saved this tweet but somebody broke down the tournament teams by last years spending. UF was below average at less than $8mil. Tops was 22mil and IU would’ve been in the top 5. Maybe it shakes out differently, but some of those coaches are gonna learn what it means to be a football school. -

He doesn’t provide that satisfaction because he hasn’t really accomplished anything that would be noteworthy at IU. That’s also what makes him not an A+. This board and many other places were filled with people saying the same about Archie. You’d think they’d learn their lesson. That doesn’t mean Devries isn’t the right man for the job. He certainly could be. -

That’s how I remember it. Collins was basically K’s right hand man and presumed heir apparent, but decided he didn’t want to wait around any longer. He was still considered the odds on favorite if K retired for a little while. But eventually Scheyer worked his way into K’s position as heir. Interesting that they all three are from Chicago. Obviously K played for Knight and the other two for K. Pretty decorated guards, smart guys. All seem relatively close knit. Of course, the other guy in that little group was Wojochowski and he hasn’t worked out. Capel is another one. -

Part of the job. Always has been but is even moreso in the NIL era. If you want to be a shy basketball nerd, there’s plenty of assistant coaching jobs to be had. -

I think you guys sell him a little short. Best coach ever at NW. consider that McCollum couldn’t have won at NW this year like he did at Drake because he wouldn’t have been able to get all his kids into NW. There’s probably about as good of a chance that he comes here and builds IU into a powerhouse as McCollum, imo. Collins was K’s right hand man forever. Was a good recruiter. Is a midwestern guy who would probably recruit the hell out of Indiana, IL, Ohio and Michigan like Knight used to. Of course, the downside for both would be pretty much where we’re at: mediocrity or worse. -

I think the way the Stevens news got out of control last time and blew up in his face, Dolson was always going to keep things tight this time around. It isn’t an indication of any specific hire, only that he was professionally embarrassed last time. If Brownell makes the FF the entire tone of this thread will change to “Dolson is an idiot for not locking up such a coaching genius when he could have!” Lol -
Probably not a bad thing in the long run. Let UNC prop up Davis for far too long. He can be there Davis/Crean and keep them out of contention for a decade-plus. Looking at the 4/5 seeds we were going to be one and done most likely anyways. Woodsons penchant for getting blown out in nonconf games makes everything else look bad.

I totally expect the NSA to be going through my bank accounts, porn history, and Todd Goldens instagram likes, but if they’re monitoring IU basketball they have to be more melancholy than I thought. Starting to feel bad for the spooks… -

They didn’t because there isn’t an explanation. It’s not a conspiracy. It’s just that they won’t embarrass the committee. Most of the people on it are not bright enough to understand the metrics they touted. That’s how you get a bunch of amateurs who are into stats and predicting (ie “bracketologists”) who look at the supposed criteria and say “okay x, y, and z should happen” and then be totally wrong. You can’t blame the people looking at the criteria honestly. You just can’t predict what a group of morons will do with any certainty. -

Tbf, even the selection show was like “UNC over IU” is crazy. 100% political trying to prop up the ACC. NCAA tournament is the only little bit of power the ncaa has left -
Hard to believe Xavier and UNC are in over IU. Sucks even though we deserve it
