Just got home and flipped it on. Didn’t even care that it was on. Went coat shopping with my daughter instead…lol -
RMK clearly built teams through recruiting cycles to be competitive every 3-4 years. It’s almost a forgotten concept. Crean was always going to be susceptible to teams who could slow him down in the half court because he relied on transition so much. His defenses without zeller were mostly brutal. Woodson-esque for different reasons. He was never going to be a championship coach.

I mean…as an IU fan I would be furious. But as a business concern, I couldn’t even be mad.
-
Ok…my sympathy only extends so far. :)
-
Do you think he’s at least getting a kick back? I would demand 10%. At least. He can’t be making much as a color guy. Kick-back Quinn…has a nice ring to it!

Crean was a supremely flawed coach. He would’vehad slightly better but still substand ard results anywhere in any era.

In the past I think those hires eventually fizzled because of recruiting. But with NIL and Nike, Duke is going to be a too 5 talented team every year. I haven’t watched him close enough to have a good read on him, but he seems confident enough to keep the ship pointed in the right direction. i’d say he’s there a good 6 to 8 years without a final four or 10 years without a title before his seat gets warm. He’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

Or McNeely. Weirdly we still got a good player in Tucker out of it, but he’s not a 3pt shooter and kind of gives us more interior scoring. I guess Woody is a known quantity in the recruiting world. -
Yea…been a good game.

15 attempts on average would put us nearly last in D1. So I agree with your overall point…as do 99% of Hoosier fans at this juncture. Goode finding 7 attempts is about right for a backup that gets hot. Getting 4 for Mbako is not enough considering how good he is from there. He should be averaging about 7 attempts given our makeup and his ability. Rice and Galloway have to get more looks. No idea if Carlye can shoot the 3 and Tucker is a midrange guy so they help very little in that regard. Personnel , lineups, style…whatever. It’s clear that Woody has little intention of changing things to emphasize outside shooting more. -
I don’t think Wisconsin is going to end up close to the top 15. But still…beating them in Khol is tough even when they’re not great.
-
Lol…I think 99% of the coaches discussed on message boards the last twenty years haven’t come to fruition for IU. Sampson was kind of out of left field. Alford was probably the number one name fought about then. I feel like Crean leaked a few days early and people talked themselves into it. But he probably wasn’t in the top 10 of people discussed until then. Archie…maybe because he was the hot young coach. Still lots of Donovan/Stevens talk that year. Woody…. not even close. So I’m guessing whomever we hire next will not be a name on people’s wish list if the past is any prologue.

I lived there ten years and went every year IU played. Thought for sure I’d see a winner at least once. Nope! That big lead that we blew in the second half in one of Woodys first years was a killer. We even left early to go get (more) drunk—that’s not frowned upon in Wisconsin—so thankfully I watched most of the collapse from the bar.

This is where the 12 team playoff causes oversaturation. Nobody really cares about this game. Both teams are in. Both teams know they have at least one, and very likely two more games to attend. The only other time I remember it remotely close to the above was like the third time in a row Wisconsin made it, they didn’t have a chance at a title and most people figured they’d get killed by Ohio state again. They didn’t travel that year and frankly Ohio state went every year too. I can almost see the SEC and Big Ten conf championship games getting like this every year where neither of them really matter and the fans don’t care to pay a ton to be there.

He could be coaching here now if he wanted. He could be sailing the pacific in a dingy uploading videos to YouTube if he wanted. My point being that a sitting GM leaving a team in the middle of a title run would be pretty unprecedented. One would definitely burn a few bridges leaving that way. It’s the type of thing an agent would throw their body in front of, but his wife’s his agent so maybe he doesn’t care. I agree. I think he would still be a tier 1 hire but maybe not as much of a slam dunk as I once did. You see so many other successful coaches getting out of the current NIL/recruiting situation I think it’s hard to know how a coach would do in it until they’ve been in it.

Timing is really rough for currently employed nba guys. The season doesn’t end until June and nobody is walking away from the defending champs before the season is over. (I can’t believe I am even Stevens poasting…but I’m bored with IU basketball right now and barely watched the game…)
-
Oh man… you missed the Lon Kruger to IU salad days. Like the Stevens deal except exactly the opposite. Lol
-
I think it was one of Dan Wetzels books that had a chapter on how Alabama landed Saban. Basically the exact opposite of IU sending out the doofus brigade.

I saw Rhode Island is higher than us in NET. Archie’s revenge tour?

Just to play devils advocate, I’d say the cig hire was a home run. Giving him that extension is upping the stakes. Plenty of schools have handed out big contracts to coaches after an initial bout of success and then regretted it. Call up your friendly Florida state fan if you want horror stories. As far as basketball didn’t dolson lead the failed Steven’s hire which led to Woody? And didn’t dolson give Woody a raise? Also, where would all the trust of dolson come from? If IU does things by committee wouldn’t those people want credit for hiring cig? And wouldn’t they want a say in the next big hire? (again, ftr I’m a cig fan)

That’s merely a reflection of their own competence. I listed one example I knew for a fact. Lickliter at Butler and basketball. Jurich at Lville was purported to have final say during his tenure. Either way, there are other examples of schools empowering talented people. Obviously the job involves schmoozing donors and placating alumni to some extent, but it’s simply not a fact that having a bunch of voices in the room for decision making time is the only way. It’s just how Indiana operates.
