I think Brunk is still a TBD. It looks like he will probably return since he's been at the team meetings but the last I saw it was undetermined whether he would return for next season or not. Of course, this was when Miller was still coach so maybe that has changed and I just missed it.

Miller's first year they lost by 20+. At Assembly Hall.

If the Celtics fire Stevens in the next few seasons maybe Woodson will hire him as the coach in waiting. lol -

And you think they started lifting during the season only during the last 4 seasons? It's not a new thing. The lack of shooting is more due to Miller than weight lifting. -

At least 3 back injuries that all seemed to come outside of games. They could've happened at practice or in the weight room. Crean had a problem with ankle and lower leg injuries in practice that seemed to mostly go away after Miller came in and abandoned the sand pit. For Miller it seems the common injuries outside of games has been back. There's also Phinisee's lower abdominal injury which could also have been from lifting. That's just speculation on my part as I have no insider info on how those injuries occurred. Regardless, other than the social media pictures you couldn't really see much of a difference in play. The players didn't seem stronger than many of their opponents and there wasn't a noticeable instead in quickness or athleticism over the last 4 years. I don't care if he goes, especially if Woodson can bring in someone from the NBA that specializes in basketball players rather than Marshall who was mostly football with some basketball and hockey players. -
I think Gonzaga will win but there is always the possibility that the pressure will get to them. They're going for their school's first NC and the first undefeated season in 45 years. I'm sure they'll be asked about those things many, many times over the next week. All it takes is one off game or, at this point, just a few bad plays to end the run. I don't think it happens though and they win it all.

I think his transfer is actually for academic reasons. I think he actually wanted to go to grad school for something that isn't offered at IU. I've thought this since he entered the portal instead of just moving on from basketball and college or staying at IU. I don't know him personally so that's just a guess. Doesn't he have a clothing business he's started or wants to start? Maybe Providence has a fashion major or something.

Kenny Payne just turned down a head coaching position at DePaul the other day. I doubt he'll leave the NBA to become an assistant coach if he didn't want to become a head coach. -

I wonder if that $400k Matta is making is a "transition cost" that the donor is ultimately paying. -

DOBO does a lot of stuff that the coaches don't want to do. I doubt Matta wants to do it either. For that reason alone I think there will still be a DOBO. Besides, why not fill a position that is there? The person hired could turn in to a future assistant coach or possibly head coach. -

This one is huge and it's one I've been wondering about with him. If he's aware of his weaknesses he can hire complementary assistant coaches to cover those. Self awareness of strengths and weaknesses is a quality I think several of our recent coaches have lacked and it showed up in the product on the floor. -

I don't hate this hire but don't love it, either. There were 4 coaches that I would've been thrilled with to varying degrees if hired. He wasn't one of them. So I was initially disappointed when this news broke but wasn't yet official. Since it's become official I feel pretty neutral about it. The addition of Matta certainly helped that. This neutral feeling is pretty much the same or better than I've felt about all the hires since Knight and what I was expecting. Dolson didn't let me down in that aspect. lol I will say this is favor of him: from everything that's been said he really, really wanted this job. He tried to get it before we hired Miller and then again this time. Whether that will help or not, it is certainly something that we haven't seen in any of the coaches we've hired since Knight with the possible exception of Crean. Davis had his eye on the NBA and never seemed to embrace the university. Sampson has always struck me as a mercenary who doesn't feel loyalty to the school he's at. Crean did seem to really love the school. Miller seemed to just view it as another job with no real love for the school. Another thing is that if he turns out to be very successful we won't have to worry about him bolting the the NBA. He's already been there and done that. I view this as kind of a compromise by Dolson. He wanted Stevens from the NBA but couldn't get him. A portion of the fan base wanted a former player, usually Alford. In Woodson he was able to get an NBA coach (and former player) who was also a former player but without the baggage and known mediocre college coaching record of Alford. I'm hoping for the best and really want this to work out. -

Sacrifice in the bottom of the ninth of a tie game that advances a runner into scoring position. Could be a great play that helps win the game or could just be one more out closer to starting over the next inning. -

Beilein was recently (I think in the last week or two) asked if would ever consider being an assistant coach. He said, "no." -

Frozone is the nickname I've used for Durham for quite some time. It's absolutely because of the chin. I think Durham is gone either way. It'll be interesting to see which players in the transfer portal Woodson wants to return and if he's able to convince them to do so. -

The players will still be enrolled at IU and not another school until the end of the semester. So even if they commit to another school I think they can still back out. It's not as though they sign another NLI. So that gives IU some time. -

Here's the day 4 results. IU finished 6th overall. 200 fly: Burns 7th, Frankel 10th (PR) 200 back: Steele 15th, Fantoni 16th 1650: Brinegar 10th 400 free relay: 10th Platform diving: Capobianco 10th Disappointing finish to get edged out for 5th in the end but a great meet. UL looked way ahead of them coming into the meet based on seed times but IU almost caught them. https://iuhoosiers.com/news/2021/3/27/mens-swimming-and-diving-indiana-finishes-sixth-at-ncaa-championships.aspx -

Not a great relay for IU. 1 second slower than their seed time. That dropped them to 6th. UL was on fire today. UL 211 IU 207 https://swimswam.com/2021-ncaa-mens-championships-day-4-finals-live-recap/ -

Albiero for UL pulling out the win in the 200 fly really hurt. It'll come down to the relay. It'll be a very close finish for 5th place. UL is seeded 3rd and IU 7th. If they keep their seeds, IU beats UL by 2. It'll be an intense race. -
Buyouts for college coaches are very common so the chances of having to pay one for the incoming coach is very high. About the only way he wouldn't expect to pay one is if they hired someone out of work or an assistant. I'm not sure if NBA coaches have buyouts to terminate their contract early but it wouldn't surprise me if they do.

Day 3 went about as expected point-wise for IU as they gained 1.5 points over their seeds. They had some disappointing swims but Burns going from seeded in the 40s to 6th made up for those. https://swimswam.com/projected-vs-actual-day-3-score-update-at-2021-ncaa-d1-mens-championships/ For Day 4, IU had 1 swim better than expected and 3 swims that were worse during prelims (expected 30.5). IU is also expected to score 13 in the 1650 and has Capobianco in the platform diving consolation final (10th seed - 7 points). Louisville (8 points behind IU) had 1 up and 1 down. No divers. IU expected to outscore them by 18 in swimming events, including 1650. T A&M (31 points behind) had 1 up and 1 down. Also no divers. IU expected to outscore them by 21 in swimming events, including 1650. NC State (38 points behind) has 3 1650 swimmers (1 up and 2 down). No divers. They're expected to outscore IU by only 6 points in the 1650. Virginia (56 points behind) has 1 up and 3 down. Expected to score 30 points from swimming. No 1650 or divers. https://swimswam.com/2021-ncaa-mens-day-4-ups-downs-cal-goes-8-2-texas-projected-to-keep-lead/ IU currently has a 50 point lead over OSU which is good because they'll pick up major points in diving today. They have 3 divers in the platform A Final. They only have 2 swimmers today who were down from from their seeds, and 1 1650 swimmer. They're expected to score 16 points in swimming. https://swimswam.com/2021-ncaa-men-ohio-state-purdue-load-up-a-final-in-platform-prelims-on-day-4/ 400 free relay: IU seeded 7th (24 points) NC State: 1 (40 points) Louisville: 3 (32 points) OSU: 9 (18 points) T A&M: 15 (4 points) Virginia: 11 (12 points) Exciting day. I like IU's chances to finish 5th. -
De Sousa was a top 40 recruit, not in the 80s. So he was almost a 5*. Similar ranking to TJD and Kaufman. Is it him you're thinking of or someone else? To your point, yes, cheating happens even for players who aren't 5*. It is inevitable considering how much money is involved in college sports. Coaches are willing to cheat to keep their multimillion dollar salaries.

I also believe that they've heard things. The people telling them these things probably believe what they're saying. What I've seen during recruiting is that the sources tend to be very optimistic. It becomes a game of telephone of passing information from one optimistic person to another to another. It goes from "we made a great pitch and have a great chance" to the last person saying "it's a lock and we have a silent verbal." Then he announces for Purdue. I think we're seeing some of the same here. I greatly appreciate everyone who knows anyone close to or inside the athletic department passing on the information they hear. I just take it with a huge grain of salt and don't think anything is a done deal until one of the parties makes it public themselves.
