(2022) - SG C. J. Gunn to DePaul
go iu bb replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
He says it's been a while since he was measured but the last time he was measured he was 6'6" and might be around 6'7" now. -
Because not all scholarships are based on hardship. Merit based scholarships, like athletic scholarships, are not based on need but on the skills of the individual regardless of their income or their parents wealth. The rationale is that they've earned that scholarship through years of hard work to become a good enough player to receive a scholarship from a D1 school and a P5 school at that in IU's case. The scholarship is one of the incentives for choosing that school over others. It tells the players that the school values them.

It amazes me how much some people who are obviously fans of college sports (otherwise, why would they be on this message board?) are so totally opposed to the players getting both scholarships and being able to get paid for NIL. Why not just be happy for the kids? They've spent a lot of time and put in a lot of work honing their skills enough to play at this level. College sports haven't been "amateur" for a long, long time. If they ever truly were. That went out the window as soon as schools started recruiting ringers instead of just having students try out for a team. Did that ever actually happen?
-
Slimy or not (it's not), NIL is here to stay.
-
Should students on academic scholarships pay back those scholarships of they have income outside of that? If your answer is "no", then why should those on athletic scholarships?

I wonder if seeing the deals IU guys are getting compared to what they're getting (or not getting) will cause some of the Purdue players to have buyer's remorse for choosing PU over IU. I hope so.

Mike Woodson and His Coaching Staff
go iu bb replied to Hoosierfan1901's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
From what I remember from last year is that they also have a retention bonus. I think $25k. -
Do you know that he's saying that to the coaching staff and they are begging him to stay? Or is it all just message board fodder? Last year he did put his name into the portal along with 1/2 the team since his coach was fired and at that time his family wanted him closer to home. It's probable that they still want that but is it known that JG is thinking of leaving? He hasn't entered the portal this season.
-
He comes off as a great pickup not only for his skill/talent but because of his attitude. He seems like a very important piece for improving the culture.

I don't think there is a rule against that. However, a player that is good enough to receive a scholarship to play basketball at IU is good enough to get a scholarship elsewhere, even if it's just at a school like State Fair Community College. That, combined with the probable and understandable perceived slight of having the scholarship taken away, means that it is unlikely a player would stay on a team if asked to become a walk-on after being a scholarship player.
-
I pronounce it the same way as you do which means you're probably right.

Keegan Nickoson predicted IU on the 17th, so that's 2 on the rivals site. No crystal ball predictions on 247. Edit: Had to look up Nickoson and it looks like he's probably biased towards IU.

Yesterday we heading towards landing both Reneau and Evans. Today Reneau hasn't committed yet so we must be doomed to lose him and every other recruit we want forever. Woe is me!
-
I think he was originally committed to MSU.
-
I saw something on social media saying he's #22 on the NCAA all time scoring list. I'm not sure if that's true but good for him, if so. That said. I don't think IU wants him and I'm fine with that for the reasons others have already pointed out

IUBB Players in the Portal/Draft Exploratory Status
go iu bb replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
We should know either way in about 2.5 weeks, assuming they want to play next season. May 1 is the cutoff to enter the transfer portal to have immediate eligibility. -
IUBB Players in the Portal/Draft Exploratory Status

While risking a career ending injury that would've taken away that possibility. The downside for him staying in college was greater than the upside. The NIL changes that assessment for some players. -

That was a one year thing for this past season only. He would count against the 13 scholarship limit. -
https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/33684066/only-21-130-ncaa-fbs-level-schools-say-plans-provide-allowed-academic-bonus-payments-athletes-year IU isn't on that list. A ton of SEC schools are, though.
-
Nope, sure doesn't. Wishful thinking on his part that he'll get drafted but I think he can have a nice career overseas.
-
That was not actually the purpose of NIL and free transfers, not even close. The purpose was avoiding lawsuits. However, the outcome will be that the rich get richer.

Seeing how many of the players that Miller recruited (both landed and missed on) have been busts at the D1 level regardless of their rankings shows to me that player evaluation was possibly his biggest issue at the B1G level.

Dodged a bullet with him going elsewhere.
