I wasn't very excited about Fitzner when it was announced that he would transfer to IU. He didn't put up big numbers against weak competition so I didn't think he'd do well at IU. Then he had that game against Marquette and I thought I was wrong. In the end it turned out that my initial reaction was correct. I think it was a combination of the stronger competition combined with coaching. Stewart has had a year in the ACC and put up decent numbers as only a freshman and won't have Miller as coach. I think he'll turn out pretty well and really help the team this season.

Carmel junior breaststroke state champ Lieske commits to IU. https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/hoosiers-keep-ihsaa-100-breast-champion-mackenna-lieske-in-state-for-2022-23-season/ -
Based on what? His high school ranking? His actual stats at the D1 level don't fit that billing.

The whole thing was painful to watch. I'm glad it's over.

I love that they're not only making these changes to lead the way in terms of NIL but also that they're marketing it. I know I'm probably in the minority on this but I also hope they put the players names on the uniforms. I hope Woodson and his staff really embrace the NIL and use it in recruiting. When NIL gets implemented I'll make a twitter account just to give IU's athletes another follower. I hope other IU fans currently not on twitter do the same. -
Mike Woodson and His Coaching Staff

Sure, if he can coach. There's nothing to show that he can. He's been back at his alma mater in non-coaching roles. He's also being talked about as if he was part of the IU tree and mentioned along side actual IU alumni like Lewis and Fife. His dad played for IU and he grew up in Bloomington. There's nothing to indicate he has any strong feelings for IU. He certainly has no assistant coaching experience. If he wasn't Scott May's son he wouldn't be talked about here at all. Is the idea to pull him away from his alma mater to be DOBO at IU? Or is it to learn how to be an assistant coach at the same time the head coach is learning to do that at the college level? I want assistant coaches with experience and don't see any reason he'd leave to go to the same position at IU. -

Why do people keep taking about May like he's an IU guy? He's not. He's UNC. That's where he played and where's he's been working. -
You mean like the UCLA teams of the '60s and '70s? The UNC teams and Phi Slama Jama in the '80s? The Fab Five in the '90s? The last 20 years of Duke? UK under Calipari? This has been going on for a long time.

I'm guessing that at this point Roberts isn't being retained since there's been no announcement. -
I'll expand on this and add that it's only for seniors who stay at the school they were with this past season. If they transfer they will count against their new school's scholarship limit. Durham will be 1 of the 13 allowed scholarships at Providence, for example. So we (and other schools) can't just go out and grab a bunch of transferring seniors that don't count against the limit.

They can have him. I was never sold on him. He had a couple of really good seasons but outside of those hasn't been great. Granted that's at TT so maybe he'll do really well at a higher profile school but it's far from a sure thing.

I think Brunk is still a TBD. It looks like he will probably return since he's been at the team meetings but the last I saw it was undetermined whether he would return for next season or not. Of course, this was when Miller was still coach so maybe that has changed and I just missed it.

Miller's first year they lost by 20+. At Assembly Hall.

If the Celtics fire Stevens in the next few seasons maybe Woodson will hire him as the coach in waiting. lol -

And you think they started lifting during the season only during the last 4 seasons? It's not a new thing. The lack of shooting is more due to Miller than weight lifting. -

At least 3 back injuries that all seemed to come outside of games. They could've happened at practice or in the weight room. Crean had a problem with ankle and lower leg injuries in practice that seemed to mostly go away after Miller came in and abandoned the sand pit. For Miller it seems the common injuries outside of games has been back. There's also Phinisee's lower abdominal injury which could also have been from lifting. That's just speculation on my part as I have no insider info on how those injuries occurred. Regardless, other than the social media pictures you couldn't really see much of a difference in play. The players didn't seem stronger than many of their opponents and there wasn't a noticeable instead in quickness or athleticism over the last 4 years. I don't care if he goes, especially if Woodson can bring in someone from the NBA that specializes in basketball players rather than Marshall who was mostly football with some basketball and hockey players. -
I think Gonzaga will win but there is always the possibility that the pressure will get to them. They're going for their school's first NC and the first undefeated season in 45 years. I'm sure they'll be asked about those things many, many times over the next week. All it takes is one off game or, at this point, just a few bad plays to end the run. I don't think it happens though and they win it all.

I think his transfer is actually for academic reasons. I think he actually wanted to go to grad school for something that isn't offered at IU. I've thought this since he entered the portal instead of just moving on from basketball and college or staying at IU. I don't know him personally so that's just a guess. Doesn't he have a clothing business he's started or wants to start? Maybe Providence has a fashion major or something.

Kenny Payne just turned down a head coaching position at DePaul the other day. I doubt he'll leave the NBA to become an assistant coach if he didn't want to become a head coach. -

I wonder if that $400k Matta is making is a "transition cost" that the donor is ultimately paying. -

DOBO does a lot of stuff that the coaches don't want to do. I doubt Matta wants to do it either. For that reason alone I think there will still be a DOBO. Besides, why not fill a position that is there? The person hired could turn in to a future assistant coach or possibly head coach. -

This one is huge and it's one I've been wondering about with him. If he's aware of his weaknesses he can hire complementary assistant coaches to cover those. Self awareness of strengths and weaknesses is a quality I think several of our recent coaches have lacked and it showed up in the product on the floor. -

I don't hate this hire but don't love it, either. There were 4 coaches that I would've been thrilled with to varying degrees if hired. He wasn't one of them. So I was initially disappointed when this news broke but wasn't yet official. Since it's become official I feel pretty neutral about it. The addition of Matta certainly helped that. This neutral feeling is pretty much the same or better than I've felt about all the hires since Knight and what I was expecting. Dolson didn't let me down in that aspect. lol I will say this is favor of him: from everything that's been said he really, really wanted this job. He tried to get it before we hired Miller and then again this time. Whether that will help or not, it is certainly something that we haven't seen in any of the coaches we've hired since Knight with the possible exception of Crean. Davis had his eye on the NBA and never seemed to embrace the university. Sampson has always struck me as a mercenary who doesn't feel loyalty to the school he's at. Crean did seem to really love the school. Miller seemed to just view it as another job with no real love for the school. Another thing is that if he turns out to be very successful we won't have to worry about him bolting the the NBA. He's already been there and done that. I view this as kind of a compromise by Dolson. He wanted Stevens from the NBA but couldn't get him. A portion of the fan base wanted a former player, usually Alford. In Woodson he was able to get an NBA coach (and former player) who was also a former player but without the baggage and known mediocre college coaching record of Alford. I'm hoping for the best and really want this to work out. -

Sacrifice in the bottom of the ninth of a tie game that advances a runner into scoring position. Could be a great play that helps win the game or could just be one more out closer to starting over the next inning.
