  1. Day 3 went about as expected point-wise for IU as they gained 1.5 points over their seeds. They had some disappointing swims but Burns going from seeded in the 40s to 6th made up for those. https://swimswam.com/projected-vs-actual-day-3-score-update-at-2021-ncaa-d1-mens-championships/ For Day 4, IU had 1 swim better than expected and 3 swims that were worse during prelims (expected 30.5). IU is also expected to score 13 in the 1650 and has Capobianco in the platform diving consolation final (10th seed - 7 points). Louisville (8 points behind IU) had 1 up and 1 down. No divers. IU expected to outscore them by 18 in swimming events, including 1650. T A&M (31 points behind) had 1 up and 1 down. Also no divers. IU expected to outscore them by 21 in swimming events, including 1650. NC State (38 points behind) has 3 1650 swimmers (1 up and 2 down). No divers. They're expected to outscore IU by only 6 points in the 1650. Virginia (56 points behind) has 1 up and 3 down. Expected to score 30 points from swimming. No 1650 or divers. https://swimswam.com/2021-ncaa-mens-day-4-ups-downs-cal-goes-8-2-texas-projected-to-keep-lead/ IU currently has a 50 point lead over OSU which is good because they'll pick up major points in diving today. They have 3 divers in the platform A Final. They only have 2 swimmers today who were down from from their seeds, and 1 1650 swimmer. They're expected to score 16 points in swimming. https://swimswam.com/2021-ncaa-men-ohio-state-purdue-load-up-a-final-in-platform-prelims-on-day-4/ 400 free relay: IU seeded 7th (24 points) NC State: 1 (40 points) Louisville: 3 (32 points) OSU: 9 (18 points) T A&M: 15 (4 points) Virginia: 11 (12 points) Exciting day. I like IU's chances to finish 5th.

De Sousa was a top 40 recruit, not in the 80s. So he was almost a 5*. Similar ranking to TJD and Kaufman. Is it him you're thinking of or someone else? To your point, yes, cheating happens even for players who aren't 5*. It is inevitable considering how much money is involved in college sports. Coaches are willing to cheat to keep their multimillion dollar salaries.
  3. I also believe that they've heard things. The people telling them these things probably believe what they're saying. What I've seen during recruiting is that the sources tend to be very optimistic. It becomes a game of telephone of passing information from one optimistic person to another to another. It goes from "we made a great pitch and have a great chance" to the last person saying "it's a lock and we have a silent verbal." Then he announces for Purdue. I think we're seeing some of the same here. I greatly appreciate everyone who knows anyone close to or inside the athletic department passing on the information they hear. I just take it with a huge grain of salt and don't think anything is a done deal until one of the parties makes it public themselves.

I think it's because they want an "IU guy" who isn't Alford but also realize none of them have the resume right now to get excited about hiring them. That or they want Beilein butt realize he's old and don't want another search in a few years.
  5. Andrew Capobianco successfully defended his 3m championship with a career high! 100 back: Burns took 6th place (40 places above his seed time! - he's had a great meet), Fantoni was14th, and Steele 16th. 100 breast: Backes finished in 7th place. 100 fly: Frankel won the consolation final (9th place), Burns was 13th. 200 medley relay placed 11th (5th fastest time in IU history) IU is currently in 5th place with 158 points. https://iuhoosiers.com/news/2021/3/26/mens-swimming-and-diving-capobianco-cruises-to-back-to-back-gold-medals.aspx The only senior of today's scorers is Steele.

That is my top 3, maybe even in that order although I think I prefer Oats to Drew at this point. Very close between those two. I've warmed up to the idea of Musselman.
  7. Day 3 Prelims: 100 back: Burns is in the Championship Final (5th) with Steele and Fantoni in the Consolation Final 100 breast: Backes is in the Championship Final (5th) 100 fly: Frankel and Burns in the Consolation Final (9th and 10th seeds) Other swims which did not qualify for the evening session: Gambardella: 29th in 100 fly Mathias: 38th in 100 fly Calvillo: 29th in 400 IM Brinegar: 35th in 400 IM

I don't know if the Oats buyout is a big deal or not. There is a large donor committed to paying "transition costs" which seems to me might include buyout costs of the new coach. If it's not that, then what would be the large costs of transitioning that would require a donor? Dolson didn't say salary costs so it doesn't sound like this donor is helping pay the next coach above the level IU is willing to pay. So it seems like it would be a buyout that the donor is willing to pay.
  9. IU didn't do as well as seeded tonight. Luckily, so neither did most of the other teams to be concerned with, although NC State had a huge day and moved into a position to be a threat to overtake IU. Projected to finish 6th. https://swimswam.com/projected-vs-actual-day-2-score-update-at-2021-ncaa-d1-mens-championships/
  10. 400 medley relay finished 5th in 3:02.38. 200 free relay took 9th in 1:16.60. There were also no seniors on either relay as @BeerBQ pointed out for the 800 free relay. The team sits in 7th place with 84 points. https://iuhoosiers.com/news/2021/3/25/mens-swimming-and-diving-no-9-indiana-in-seventh-on-day-two.aspx Tomorrow could be a big day for the Hoosiers as some of their stronger events are then.

    Candidate Thread: Nate Oats (Alabama)

He just signed an extension 1 month ago so I doubt it.
  12. Capobianco is in the 1m Finals (5th seed) and Franzman advances to the Consulation Final (12th overall seed) of the 50 free. https://iuhoosiers.com/news/2021/3/25/mens-swimming-and-diving-no-9-indiana-adds-two-individuals-to-evening-finals.aspx
  13. I can't take credit for it, swimswam is a good source for info and they do a really good job of covering the sport. BTW, I compared the predicted scores from the most recent link to an earlier. It doesn't take in to account diving. So swimming points only and IU has a really good chance at 6th place. IU should score points in diving from Capobianco. I think OSU has some pretty good divers too. I'm not sure about Texas A&M or Michigan.
  14. IU beat its seed time by 1.44 seconds and its seed by score by 6 points (2 spots from 11th to 9th). Right now it looks like they have a good shot at finishing 6th. Their main competition for that position are Texas A&M, Michigan, and OSU who lost 2, 12, and 8 points from their seeds, respectively. So a good start for IU. I think these predicted final scores do not factor in diving so IU could move up or down depending on that. https://swimswam.com/projected-vs-actual-day-1-score-update-at-2021-ncaa-d1-mens-championships/
  15. It sounds like you're close to him. Have you ever had discussions in the past about him becoming a D1 HC? Not necessarily at IU, just in general.

Open vs not would only really influence a small sample size, but I don't think your sample size was small. Since it wasn't a small sample size that is taken into account as there would be plenty of perfect shots taken, plenty of terrible shots, and everything in between. Basically, you're seeing what you see in the real world and not just hypothetical stats. And if you think about it, it makes sense. The farther from the basket you get, the lower the shooting percentage will be, regardless of being open or not. So as you move away from the basket the efficiency of the shot drops until you hit the 3 point line and then it jumps back up again.
  19. Based on seed times, IU is projected to finish 8th. They're in a tight group of 4 teams separated by less than 10 points on the psych sheets so they could easily finish as high as 6th (5th looks out of reach) or as low as 9th. Lower than 9th is unlikely unless they really bomb, which I don't expect. https://swimswam.com/scoring-out-the-psych-sheet-for-the-2021-ncaa-mens-swimming-championships/ https://swimswam.com/2020-2021-ncaa-mens-swimming-diving-power-ranks-final-edition/

I haven't seen anyone mention Jimmy Allen. Hiring the Army coach has worked for IU in the past as well as Duke. tic

Probably the fake amateurism of college ball.
  22. Well, Stevens hasn't publicly stated he's not interested in the IU job since last week. Maybe he's had a change of heart.
  23. More conference games means there is more pressure to recruit players that can win games in conference. Winning games in conference means playing to the limits of what the officials will allow. That means very physical and slow paced versus other conferences. It may get worse since the 20 game schedule is relatively new. OOC games go from 13 down to 11 so performing against conference opponents is even more important. Recruits have already shown that many don't like the style of play in the B1G. It's not just IU that has had players go elsewhere because of pace, the league has had trouble recruiting large amounts of top talent for a while. 5* and high 4* players tend to go to ACC, SEC, Pac 12, etc. So the problem is twofold: the B1G teams seem to have trouble adjusting to playing other styles after so long in conference and the overall talent level in the league isn't great. Both of those can probably be blamed on how the league games are played and a lot of that can be blamed on officiating. In the late '90s through mid '00s the league had a 16 game schedule. I think it was ~10 seasons.
