Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)
go iu bb replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Imagine that conversation. Dolson: We'll give $8M per year. Anything you want. Stevens: It's a deal. For my assistants I'll try to get ____, ____, and ____. Dolson: Yeah... about that. I misspoke. We'll give you the $8M per year and most things you want but we get to select your assistant coaches. So almost anything you want. -
Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)

Right. I'm guessing $4.5M. Probably in the $4M-5M range. -
Yes.
-
I'm neither of them but @IUwins0708 said he heard Mrs Stevens was ready to move back to IN.

The first post on page 420 of this thread is a tweet by someone named chronichoosier. Gotta love it.

It's close to back up. But you're right, this is fun.

He would sometimes post on HSN. I think he said before Miller was fired that he didn't have any intel on that so I'm not sure if he has more info than any of us about this.

Right? I was very opposed to Dolson becoming AD and was quite disappointed when it happened. I was wrong. Even if IU doesn't hire Stevens I was wrong. Just getting a donor to pony up $10M to fire Miller and another to help pay any costs for the new coach to fix the dumpster fire the program has been was enough to prove me wrong. If he's going as hard after Stevens as everything seems to indicate, I was very, very wrong and I'm ecstatic that I was.

Yes, that's the question and an important one at that.

You make good points about Drew but I look at it like this: He only had 1 year of HC experience before taking over at Baylor so he's been learning on the job as do all coaches. But many of them start low and work there way up with various stops at increasingly difficult competition. Other than the 1 year at Valpo, Drew basically started his coaching career in a tough conference. While his career winning percentage isn't great, you can see steady improvement. Baylor basically has no history in bball to fall back on. I don't remember the exact number, but before him they had been to the NCAAT less than a handful of times in their entire history. He has them at a #1 seed. He took over a complete mess. Worse than what Crean took over at IU. So he's literally built that program from nothing. That will hurt his career numbers. A big one for me, especially after the stubbornness of Miller, is that he's shown a willingness to make big changes to his system. For a long time he primarily used zone defense and they were decent but not great at it. He switched to M2M and they now have an elite defense. Pretty good recruiter. Maybe great considering the school. 31 4* and 5* players in his time at Baylor. He could do even better at IU. Has had talent but not a ton of it in his time there so is able to develop players and put a team on the floor that is greater than the sum of its parts. Last few teams have had elite offense and defense. It took him a while to get there but now he's a more nationally known name with a lot of momentum. I don't think it would take him long at IU to get things turned around. I think he has figured out how to win consistently. But, yes, he is missing Final Fours on his resume but does have 2 Elite Eights and another couple of Sweet 16s. He has an NIT championship but no Big 12 tournament championships. Stevens is my #1-#5 choice but I would be pretty happy with Drew. I'd personally rather have him as coach over Beard. Not a sure thing but I think he could do really well at IU.

So are we talking more along the lines of $8M per? $9M?
-
New here but not to IU forums. I started on the pre-rivals peegs page in the '90s. I forgot my password there at some point and had to make a new account. So since '01 on peegs/rivals I've been minneman. Since that site sucks now, I joined HSN last year (go_iu_bb). I've lurked here on and off but after HSN went down yesterday I created an account.

He talks about coaching the Celtics in the past and present tenses but not future.
-
Right. If we're going to take one of the out of work coaches out rather have Matta than Beilein. If he's healthy enough he could be the coach for 15-20 years.

Are you on mobile? You have to drag the page to the left to see the notifications, if so.

Regarding #7, IU may not have to pay the new coach's buyout. One of the donors has pledged to cover the transition costs. That may include the buyout.
-
Looks like also @madmax and @IU Scott. I'm pretty sure I've seen a few more newcomers whose names I recognize from HSN.
-
I think some are making too big of a deal about Stevens using past tense to talk about his time so far with the Celtics. How else is he supposed to refer to the last 8 years? He also used present tense, "I am the Celtics coach" or something along those lines. That said, he didn't talk about the future. At all. In 2017, he did. And he does seem to be considering it just from his rambling answer without an absolute, no more questions asked denial.

Of the names being thrown around, he's pretty low on the list of those I want. So I agree that he would be disappointing. He's very old so only a short term solution. System coach who has taken several years at each stop to have consistently good teams. He's not coaching now and that likely won't change between now and the end of the NCAAT when other coaches will be available, so no reason to rush hiring him. Then there's his comments at Cleveland which may affect recruiting. There's at least 5 others I'd want before him.
-
At this point, I'm not sure he can control that. He'd probably trash the head coach (himself) out of habit.
-
I think Nebraska has a bot set up monitoring the transfer portal that automatically contacts any player that appears on it. It seems they contact every transfer and are one of the first schools to do so. Nice list for Durham, though. Maybe he wasn't as bad as some fans like to say. I wish him good luck.
-
That's kind of my take on Beard, as well. Plus, I've read from people that have watched way more of TT than I have that his offense isn't great. I think he's be an upgrade from Miller (not hard) but I don't know if he is the answer that would have everyone happy in 5 years or so.

Which was yesterday. The site has been down since ~11 or 12 MST (1-2 PM EST) yesterday. Sometimes that server has issues with too much traffic but this isn't that. There is another issue. I hope they figure it out soon.

Error EX144. Looks like a corrupted database. It's been down since yesterday.
