Game Thread: NCAA R64 vs. Kent State - 3/17 @ 10:45 pm (no lie)ET on TBS

That is certainly the biggest question and the answer to that will have a large effect on the outcome of the game. -
I see that now. I was responding to a post talking about recent games which said IU only played poor defense against Iowa and MSU. I was pointing out that in the recent games against Maryland and PSU, they played worst perimeter D than it would appear from just looking at the end of game stats. The key word being "recent." I even gave numbers which could've been used to determine which game I was talking about.
-
It may have come in spurts but Maryland missed 4 3-pointers in the last minute and ended up 9-24 for the game. That means that entering that final minute they were 9-20 which is 45%. So through 39 minutes of the game Maryland was hitting at a rate of 45% and it just went down because they were jacking 3s to try to come back. That doesn't look like solid perimeter D to me.
-
For the majority of the games against Maryland and PSU IU was letting them hit well over 40%. The final percentages ended up in the mid 30%s but that doesn't tell the story of how poorly the perimeter defense was for the majority of those two games. Maryland, for example, was 9 of 20 until the last minute or so.

It makes even less sense now with the transfer portal being what it is now. Take a chance in a kid and if it doesn't work out they can be immediately eligible at a new school.

Dude is from France. Why did he even bother going to college if he's going to do this? This is from 2 months ago but it has him as a second round pick: https://www.nbascoutinglive.com/yohan-traore/

Ahhhh, poor Rutger. Counterpoint to the the Rutger fan: screw Rutger. Also, the totality of their resume wasn't good enough. The OOC portion was a total joke. Did I mention screw Rutger?

Providence 40% chance against pUKe. Oral Roberts 21% chance against Dook. -

https://theathletic.com/4300249/2023/03/12/ncaa-tournament-midwest-region-houston-texas-indiana-anaylsis/ What's worrisome is that one of Kent State's strengths on defense is steals according to that article. IU has allowed too many steals this season, so their strength is one of IU's weaknesses. -
"Although he had NIL money exceeding six figures, according to sources his priority was more NIL deals. And he was not happy about playing time. It was hard to justify that much more playing time for a player who stopped working, and acted as if he was better than his production. He is talented. He isn’t talented enough to be lazy." Ouch. They did also say some good things about him so I don't think it was just a hit piece. Sounds like a "pass" to me. https://www.star-telegram.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/mac-engel/article272966515.html

I guess that's one way to tell a player he's not welcome back next year. Just put his name in the portal.

So you're saying we're elite again! It'll be proven whether or not we can beat Kent State. :) -
Stewart was a Miller addition. He was also one that seemed to cause chemistry issues. Unlike Kopp and Xavier (although Xavier has made questionable decisions off the court). Durr was another Woodson addition.

Unfamiliar is probably the biggest factor. 4 days isn't that short of turnaround. -

78-18. Brutal. IU has had no answer for their perimeter game. Combined: PSU 26/54 = 48.1% IU 6/28 = 21.4% -
I don't really agree with him. Getting the players tournament experience is helpful, even if that experience is the NIT. Teams don't generally go from no post season at all to final four overnight. Besides, this stance doesn't make that much sense at UC. They've only been to 6 FF. 5 of those were in consecutive years from 1959-1963. Outside of that, the only other time was 31 years ago in 1992. So we're not talking about a school with a history of consistently making deep runs. Apparently, they've had tons of disappointing years.

Terrible call. Refs should get suspended for such flagrantly bad calls and fired if they make too many of them. Coincidentally, I'm watching a documentary about Tim Donaghy right now. They talk about some of the s**t that NBA refs pull along with how they'll hold grudges against players, coaches, and teams and call games according to those grudges. I'm sure NCAA refs are the same.
-
Yep. There will probably be a large influx of players entering tomorrow and Tuesday from teams with no postseason and then a steady stream for the next couple of weeks as teams have their seasons end.

Done if the top teams are getting injuries recently. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/35837414/marcus-sasser-injured-no-1-houston-aac-tourney-semi?platform=amp

Something definitely needs to change there. Most of this game, PSU was shooting well over 40% from 3 (they finished at ~34%). Even though Maryland ultimately finished at around 37-38%, until the final minute or so they were close to 50% from 3. 9-19 or 9-20. The premier defense needs to improve and do so quickly. -

Woodson keeping IU's tradition of not doing much in the B1GT, I see. Maybe next season let's lose that tradition and try something different, like winning it. -
