IUWBB vs N. C. State - NCAA - 3/27/21 @ 6:00 on ESPN2

IU women just may win it all. This team is seriously impressive, has excellent poise and mental strength, has an incredible player in Berger, and is as well coached as anyone. Hats off to the women! -

In college at IU I had to take one - 1 - mathematics class for my major. I took Finite Mathematics because it had the word “finite” in it. This has nothing to do with recruiting or basketball, but you made me remember it lol. :) -

Thing is, the timing is normal. We want reassurance and answers, but nothing is off here timing wise it’s just that we want answers. -

Yeah the irony is the firing of Barnes who was in the tourney well, every year, recruited very well (hello, KD) and has continued successfully after leaving UT. But again Shaka just had a tremendous year here in Texas, he didn't win a tourney game this year but that just happens, and his recruiting leading into this season set up the team he built. From what I hear the talks with Marquette were his decision. -

It's another $2M but he may be. Haven't read through the thread but if not covered Shaka is apparently in discussions with Marquette. He just had a seriously successful year at UT, he lost in the first round but that happens as it did to other programs, seemed premature to assume that despite the exceptional year UT had and the recruiting that lead to it he'd be out because of the tourney flop, but seems maybe not premature as the talks with Marquette appear to be real. UT has tons of cash, another $2M means nothing to UT, but we'll see. -

Just saying here the timing is normal and should be expected. We fired the coach. They are getting their names in to have communications with other programs. If my kid were on the team I'd tell him to do the same. Just wouldn't read into it as a done deal that they're gone, we really just don't know, and say we get a Beard etc., why wouldn't they return? Again not giving you a hard time man just think we're in a wait and see. -
This is all correct and with the coach fired it is all the more true and basically normal for current players to add their names to the portal. People are still assuming that means they're all gone -- we do not know that and depending on who the replacement coach is some or all may return.

I think you know and not giving you a hard time, but just because get on the transfer list doesn't mean they're transferring -- this is basically normal, with the coach fired and it yet being unknown who the replacement will be. Depending on who we get, any or all of these could return, we just don't know. -

Fully agree and would add a similar thought or expand on the breadth of talent comment — the really good players used to all gravitate to the biggest programs. Yes the Dukes etc still get the top talent generally but there’s now a much bigger talent pool than there was back in the day, with the explosion of AAU and early bball development and the overall explosion of the game the depth of really good players has grown along with the evolution in supply and demand that you’re talking about. So really good coaches can succeed at a greater number of programs for a number of reasons -

In all fairness there have been plenty of opportunities over the past 20 years to land great coaches but the problems started with the U settling for Mike Davis to appease the players (Fife was leading the charge to leave us Davis wasn’t hired after RMK’s dismissal). The U / AD / Pres then landed a genuinely great coach in Sampson but rolled the dice on his lack of ethics and blew it. But he was and is a great coach, can’t really disregard that. Then the AD/committees got a guy in Crean who restored the U’s integrity and academics while bringing back B1G championships — was he the best IU could’ve landed then? No. Was he picked because that’s all IU could get? No. Was he the right guy at the time? Maybe maybe not. He did restore the U’s integrity, he did start playing a baseball player and Walkons courtesy of the u’s overreaction and caving to the NCAA’s pursuit of Sampson, but he obviously wasn’t the right guy long-term. Then we hired CAM. In retrospect that was a real failure. But it didn’t look like it at the time. I don’t think we’re where we are because big name coaches haven’t been interested and I’ve followed all of this for the full 20 years, fwiw. I do think we blew it with CAM and that this coach decision is the biggest one we’ve had since Knight was fired. I hope we don’t roll any more dice or settle. Get the guy we need now. -

OK this is just in fun -- no one thinks IU is pursuing her or that she's in any way in the running. That said, she's absolutely legit, she got the job with the Spurs on her merit, she was the one they / Pop wanted, for good reason. She's excellent. She has the love and respect of the players. She's really good. Anyone thinking to the contrary has no knowledge here. But it's all in fun. -
Unfortunate, but true
-
You could be right, but it's not foolish to think he also may be saying what he said, that's it's exploratory, while IU has no coach in place and that remains an unknown. If IU lands a big fish coach and/or he feels comfortable with the new coach, he could stay. That's not foolish or naive, it's the situation.
-
The move is "exploratory" He may or may not be gone. You're right though, he'll definitely have good teams 'recruiting' him.

What Are You Willing to Live With?

I'm personally good with playing in the grey area but within the rules, with the compliance dept. working TOGETHER with the basketball program, to assist it, in working within the rules (and not playing a gotcha role, as a limiter). Work within the rules, maintain the integrity of IU basketball, while pushing the envelope where there is grey. No, I'm not at all on board with violating the rules just because other programs (UNC, KU, UK, Syracuse, AZ, etc. etc.) do. Win, but win right, but also go full bore with compliance dept. assistance. -

Story from USA Today yesterday. Smith takes a not so subtle jab at CAM lol. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/tourney/2021/03/21/arkansas-eric-musselman-should-be-new-indiana-mens-basketball-coach/4793839001/ Musselman is "a coach that allows you the freedom, who allows you to play basketball," he added. "The main thing, honestly, is just confidence. I think the way we prepare and we practice allows all of us as individuals to have confidence." Kind of wondering why Musselman isn't getting a little more pub here. -
