(2018) SF - Jerome Hunter Transfers To Xavier
HoosierHoopster replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
It’s not either or for me - Geronimo has monster potential, best nba potential on the team imo and he can shoot and we should see a lot more of him and his shooting under Woodson — but, Hunter has the ability to really spread the floor. He may or may not ever have that explosion you’re talking about again, but his game was always a more smooth - sort of Wat-like game, not built on quick-twitch / explosion. If he returns fully healthy I see a lot of Wat - like game in him - and remember Wat went from a guy people complained about for his inability to move laterally quickly on D and soft attempts at the rim through his soph year to one of the best on-ball defenders on the team -

Also consider the source, just more confidence destroying by cam -

Yeah he showed a really nice baby hook early when Cam ran some sets to get him looks, converted well, and then poof we never saw cam run those sets for him again (another mind-boggling failure to run actual available offense). That baby hook is sweet, would love to see more of it -

I've been more of a Hunter fan than some, really like his upside and potential in Woodson's anticipated get-up-and-down / spread-the-floor 4-out offense. He will have the "green light" he's needed to regain his confidence, which CAM and his plodding, limit the 3-ball offense seemed to undermine. He is the type of player who should really benefit from Woodson's system. He's better than a 34% shooter, and would bank on him shooting in the area of 38% or better in Woodson's offense. Pulling for the kid, really like what he can bring. -
Who will be most improved player & Why.

Really hard question this year, especially because it comes with a complete change in offensive philosophy to go with a complete change in coaching and new veteran players. I can see reasons for several players to show real improvement in production. Hunter for his shooting and a full season removed from his lost year — confidence and spacing for the arc. Lander as he’ll now have a college body to go with the experience he gained, and in that offense, and not a pac line D, he can shine, his P&R potential with TJD is huge. Geronimo— this kid has so much potential, he already has the athleticism and D, his floor awareness is now ready and yes he can shoot, I expect him to bloom under Woodson whether or not it happens early on. Leal for his shooting, this kid can really shoot in a system that utilizes spacing, he has more work than say Lander to round out his game but the opportunity is there -
Yeah they have a Few reasons to be good bad dad joke of the day :)

Agree it's the shiny new thing syndrome in full effect. And Galloway is getting underrated and dismissed out of hand. The kid is good, he just 1) needs to develop a jumper, and 2) is a frosh that needs to make that frosh-to-soph jump. There's no reason to think he won't, the talk all past summer was that he was playing so well and hard in summer scrimmages and practice that he might start. Then, ultimately and after playing strong, really the best of the frosh, he did. Then his lack of a jumper was exposed, teams scouted him and sagged off, and he gradually played less -- as he should have until he develops the jumper. But he was a FROSH who showed promise. Developing a team -- which Woodson is very good at -- means developing the players you have along with adding (now through the portal) and building on the chemistry you have. We have transfers, we have upper classmen, we have young players with promise, and maintaining and building on the chemistry you have is important. I would bet on, and look forward to seeing, Galloway continue to develop and add to the team.

Over the summer CAM touted Rob as one of the team’s top 3 outside shooters (with Al and Hunter). That was from over the summer scrimmaging and practice not games but he was hitting. He has the form and the ability imo, a lot seems to be about where his head is and whether he’s being encouraged to shoot. Hope he can show that shooting in games next season -
Not following you. Among several available possible lineups -- TJD, Galloway, Stewart, Rob, Johnson / TJD, Stewart, Johnson, Rob, Lander etc. etc. Not getting your pushback. The team will run multiple lineups, as usual except under CAM, with multiple looks. We have depth, as in actual depth, and in a 4-out we're not talking traditional power forward/center lineups, that's the point, more guys can run at what this piece is defining as the "power forward" spot. So Baylor started a 6'10 forward and basically 4 guards. All I'm saying is the article is looking a the "4" as a traditional PF, that's limiting, we're going to see a lot of lineups and I'd bet on some pure small ball sets.

same applies to Hunter. He's better than a 34% shooter, the spreadout game is going to benefit him -
Good with Race, but there are other guys not included who can play within a 4-out. It's a "power forward" breakdown. It doesn't look at incorporating more small ball sets such as using Stewart, Galloway or Leal. It's a height-based look. Galloway's strength is downhill attacks and finishing at the rim, we all know he needs to develop a jumper but he could potentially flourish with shooters around him. Stewart and Leal are 6'5 shooters. I'd bet on seeing some true small-ball lineups, this writeup just doesn't look at guys under 6'7 except Geronimo because of his obvious athleticism.
-
Decent writeup but I think it's a bit off on the "power forward" analysis, it's more of a traditional analysis than a 4-out. Will be interesting to see how Woodson implements his offense at IU.

(2021) SG Tamar Bates to INDIANA

It’s funny, my initial reaction to the Woodson hire was straight disappointment - with all of the build up surrounding Beard etc. But after just a little time, starting to think about the draw Woody could and probably would have in recruiting as a successful, long- term, well-respected NBA coach, and his IU pedigree and the likely immediate credibility all of that would bring, and his record of improving teams in the NBA, I then thought wait, this could turn out to be really good. And now we’re seeing major early returns. Talk about hitting the ground running. I mean, damn. Beyond impressive. Immediately brought players back and filled clear needs in transfers and landed a true two-way stud, elite recruit. And already connecting well with the players by all accounts. I’m not sure what high school recruiting is going to look like in a year with this whole portal thing, but I am sure our recruiting is going to be strong going forward — and with that there’s every reason to believe now that we’ll be a really strong program again and soon. -

Gotta add that splitting hairs in the 'rankings' doesn't really mean or reveal anything. Guys are ranked based on who saw them, when, how often, against what competition, what they're factoring into the ranking (e.g., athleticism, next-level potential on body-type, competition level, and so on), etc. The difference between a guy ranked 75 and a guy ranked 45 or 50? Often, nothing or you could even flip the two. Just saying that looking at a service's ranking has limited utility, it's why coaches scout heavily and offer guys close to our outside the top 100 all the time. Consensus top 10-15 or top 25 or so are usually in a different category depending on strength of class, but the higher you go the less the difference is. -

Kid is the perfect example of the type of player Woodson will be bringing in, imo, length, shooting and defensive minded — the bring in a lot of NBA stuff in our offense is exactly what I’ve been talking about and looking forward to seeing. Our shooting is going to improve quickly not just with new players like Bates — who will absolutely improve our outside game as he grows into a college player — but with the spreading of the floor and green lighting of the arc, we have guys who can shoot and what they can do is going to look better. I’m pretty high on our upside going forward now. -
When did we change our name to OSU? :)

I’m going from early practice feedback from players and the way he developed over the first half of the season to work his way into a starting role for a bit. Then teams scouted him and sagged off and he couldn’t hit shots, and maybe he hit that freshman wall. I think his work ethic is there just needs a lot of work on his shot, mechanic is off. If he can develop a shot ....
