I was thinking he’s more like Hulls. Yogi was always much, much faster than Cupps. Yogi was too fast for his own game as a frosh, often running into traffic and leaving his feet before having the play/pass ready. Yogi also came in a 5 star with NBA speed and shooting ability and it got him there. Cupps does not have that speed. Hulls was that same cerebral type and excellent shooter without the high level athleticism. If Cupps is anything close to Hulls I’ll be a happy camper along with everyone else here. To me, that’s a better comp. On ranking of JHS? Had nothing to do with who he’d eventually play with, and it was his own game at IU, being the only player other than TJD who could create his own shot and the Derozan like pull up that is getting him drafted. Cupps doesn’t have that game, different player.

I had a lot of frustration with Woodson’s and staff’s decisions this season, including that we still shot a low volume from the arc despite that we had shooting at better percentages, while we continued to play through TJD/inside and even though his recognition and ability to kick it out of the double-T was much better - but, now we’ll see if what Woodson says about how he wants to play holds water, including in how he continues to recruit this year and next from the portal and HS, and how he spreads the floor. His NBA coaching style is consistent with what he’s saying, so there’s reason for optimism, I just want to see that change come fast, no reason for it not to.

That’s a pretty strong statement. JHS came in a combo guard but a clearly deserved 5 star who then ended up running our O very well, and his handle in traffic is good enough to make him a first round draft pick at point, and you think Cupps is on that level? Haven’t seen any scout consider or rank him like that, and that comparison would make him extremely under-ranked.

Maybe it’s just: $$$$$$$$$$$$

Yeah he's not a point guard, but he plays on ball and can cover the primary role at times
-
NBA point guards are still point guards for the most part. LeBron and Luka (neither of whom actually play the point) are extreme examples, they are two of the best in the League currently and likely all time. They're unique players. To go back to Paul George, he was largely running point because they were going to and did trade their point, then they went out and got Westbrook (which I still find ridiculous but it may work out) because they wanted a guy manning the point -- the primary on-ball player. The NBA is a lot more wide open for on-ball and non-positional play generally, but pg's are still mostly pg's.

I don’t see it that way. If you have an OG that’s your more natural wing (what he became at the next level, even though he was a forward under Crean). Gallo has on ball vision, he helps run sets, he brings the ball up. All said the 2 and 3 are interchangeable, but it’s the on ball play and offense orchestrating role that Gallo brings that makes him a guard for me. Bigger conversation is how the game has gone to non-positional play outside of the point. I’m a big Paul George fan (which anyone who knows me from HSN knows lol), his play this year has been really interesting, played a lot on ball / orchestrating the O, often the point, while playing wing, exceptional bball IQ, and while guarding the other teams’ best players. Gallo’s fine where he is. Add lengthy, athletic, 2-way players, he’ll shine right where he is.
-
Just look at that guard. That’s the kind of player we’ve been missing (not including JHS). Athletic, monster competitive, 2-way player, willing and able to lock down (why does my iphone try to change lock to lick every time, lol) the other team’s best while attacking offensively. Gallo’s the closest but a support player (as much as I love his game). More killer players, please.
-
He’s more a combo guard - i mean the 2 and 3 are largely the same on opposite sides of the floor, but Gallo often is on ball and helps orchestrate offense, and he tends to be our 3d leading assist guy. He’s a guard in my book

Yeah we have portal needs...

How far away is IUBB from being elite again?
HoosierHoopster replied to southernindianahoosier2's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Don't mean to quibble but UCONN is an excellent team that went through a tough conference stretch of 4-5 games. They're deserving of where they are. -
Welcome to posting here -- Yes it's here to stay, but it needs regulation. The wild west approach is just bad for the sport and college generally.

Indiana Players Now In The Portal

I like Leal and think he adds to the team, but if we're playing him much we're not winning at this level. -
I seem to remember Baumgart being one who doesn't really know what he's talking about but maybe I'm misremembering? What's his track record?

I get the Indiana sentiment, but only to an extent. We don’t need to be Indiana centric, that’s just limiting. Give me the best, explosive, lengthy, quick 2-way players, they can be Canadien for all I care :) -

I know you’re just clowning and you like JG, but I’d go with his excellent game @Illinois (starter, 13 and 8), or v Wisc (starter, 12 and 11), really kind of unfortunate he was immediately relegated to the bench just bc Race came back, and was then injured. -
(2019) PF Trayce Jackson-Davis to INDIANA

So cool to see both TJD and Moren win. And next year the women's team is going to challenge for the NC. -
Yeah we’re still shooting below avg on volume including in conference, running thw O through TJD. Should see increased outside shooting with TJD moving on. Both X and Gallo showed they can hit at a good clip but need another shooter or 2 with Kopp graduating.

Lol now you're critiquing me? Classy move. Instead of looking at his averages, which is just plain silly, why not just acknowledge that he had several good games -- which he clearly did -- along with what I specifically said, he couldn't find consistency, which, you know, will result in low average scoring. But hey, you be the judge. And while you can't acknowledge it, I guess because you're incapable of doing so, we all saw how well JG played during the team's best run of the season, after his sit down with Woodson, while Race was out injured. He played his best starting with TJD. But yeah, he just can't play. -

And he’s the guy Woodson specifically touted, repeatedly, coming out of the summer, and he did have several very good games, and he was very much a team player, and he has a high level of talent but didn’t find consistency. Unplayable the 2d half of the season is a real overstatement. If he moves on it’ll be bc it’s best for him, for his family, for what he perceives is right for his basketball future, or other factors we don’t know. I just don’t see the need to bash guys that gave it their all for IU.
