Marquette is a better program than IU now and since MU has extended Smart through 2029 I would assume there’s a pretty expensive buyout in place as well, similar to Otzelberger and Iowa State.

Not sure being unable to finish is a deal-breaker at IU these days -
Transfer Portal w IU Interest

I gather Filipowski has a brother at Harvard who’s entered the portal? Maybe a twin brother iirc -
Maybe guys like Sprinkle, Medved, English, etc.

My fear is that in order for Woodson’s staunchest (and wealthiest) supporters to give in and let the AD make a change, it may take another season of not making the NCAAT. If so, I also fear that the job will no longer be as attractive to potential coaches as some IU fans think it would be, even with the compensation, tradition, facilities and NIL involved (and presumably the NIL might go down with Woodson’s exit). It could be a scenario where no “proven” or established coach would want to take on what might be (by next March) a major reclamation project, portal or no portal. Dolson might then have to just roll the dice with an assistant from a successful P5 program who’s not been a head coach, or with a guy who has a successful HC resume at a lower level.

think Gentry was also an asst for Underwood at Illinois at one time
-
If I were at OkSU I think I’d be going after Devries (Drake coach)
-
You could also say the IU job is kind of toxic, and that the Big 12 is a better basketball conference than the B1G 10. I assume Okla State will open up (if it hasn’t already)
-
He also turns 70 this year I believe
-
So does his buyout.
-
I’d be really surprised if May would take another P5 job this off-season and then bail on it a year later. If Dolson wants May, I suspect he’ll either have to hire him this cycle or hope he stays at FAU for another year.
-
and currently has about an $18 million buyout ($15 million a year from now)
-
Neither team had very good seasons, but maybe the IU staff might as well try to bring in 1) Furman’s entire backcourt and 2) Pepperdine’s entire frontline.
-
So if next season circles the drain, will their rationale shift to “hey, Crean got 9 years…”?
-
Yup, just like Arkansas—except for those Elite Eights and S16. Other than that…
-
Would Matt Graves take over for Schertz at ISU if Josh left? I was hoping Woody might consider adding Matt to his staff, but maybe it’ll be someone like Wittman instead. More “NBA lite” stuff, I suppose.
-
Yeah, I’d almost be inclined to hold on in Terre Haute for another year rather than make that move. Maybe the money’s significantly better? Think Schertz is currently making about $365,000 fwiw.
-
Welp, if nothing else at least it freed them up to do a coaching search. Wonder if Schertz ( or May if OSU fell through) would be interested.
-
And if they do, IU will likely not be given any credit for doing so by most of the people who habitually criticize IU for being “too impatient” or “changing coaches too often.”
-
Agree, because imo MM (if he’s back) should be a 4, not a 3. Regardless of who plays the 5–Reneau, Sparks (!?!), or a portal addition.
-
I don’t see any realistic scenario where IU could hire May a year from now unless he stays at FAU. Certainly not if went to OSU, Louisville or Michigan. Probably not even if he went to WVU or DePaul. He’d probably have to request an “out” or “exception” clause in his new contract (in the event IU wanted to interview him) and if I were the AD at those other schools a request like that would be a major red flag.
-
Maybe JerryYeagley and Scotty D have been rounded up and sentenced to a “not true fan” gulag in one of the nearby quarries
-
Maybe so—thought he had some connection to IU, like maybe Woodson coached the kid’s dad, or something along those lines.
-
Is the Stanford kid that IU recruited going into the portal? Big shooting guard iirc
