Everyone expecting a tourney team are actually asking for a top 40 team(OSU 41, Boise St 44, SMU 46, WVU 51didn't make it; UNC 36 Texas 39 were last 4) all made from ashes(0 returning players) of the MW era. I hope he starts to focus on HS recruiting, but there isn't much available at this point, so patience may be needed. As of now, of the 7 or 8(Goode) on next years roster 2 are returning for 26-27. That is not a receipt for sustained success.

Hurley started at UConn in 2018 the portal launched on October 15, 2018 so he still missed the tourney and had 3 seasons without a tourney win even with the portal. They also didn't have to replace all 15 players in their first season. Oh and IU was 54 in Net. I don't imagine you won't be throwing a fit if IU is in the same boat as they were last season. Drawing a pass fail line in the sand based on making the tournament is worthless. Everyone hopes for season 1 success, but building a culture, rebuilding in state recruiting ties, constantly trending upward is essential the first season or 2.

Todd Golden was 16-17 in his first season, so was Dan Hurley and he didn't win a tourney game until season 5, both of them starting their current jobs during the portal era. Jim Harbaugh was 1-6 in bowl games before his Natty. Highlighting exceptions to the rule doesn't make it the norm.

Yes it's different. CDDV arrived with zero or 1 returning player. The portal giveth and the portal taketh away. This is more like Crean's first season than Archie Millier's. Of course rebuilding a roster is much easier now, but CDDV is still relying on mostly 1 yr rental players to get things rolling. For sustainable programs the 1 yr portal players are a supplement to recruiting not the main course. UF got rolling 2 seasons ago with portal transfers but this season 60.2% of minutes played and 56.9% of scoring returned from 2023-24 roster and 5 of their top 6 scores were return players. So expecting a top 20 team and a top 5 to 6 NCAA bid, while it would be great, is far from the bar for a successful first season.

DDV is attempting to do just what Golden and Kelsey have done and build a "team" not what Rutgers attempted and failed at accomplishing. Your example of Duke surrounding Flagg with "role players" was just wrong. That is more the Lebron Miami Heat model of star players joining forces. Until you have success of a Calipari UK, Williams UNC, or Coach K Duke no amount of studying is going to help create that flow of talent coming in below market cash value. Understand Duke offers much more than just the cash. Until IU offers realistic yearly chances of Final Fours and NBA lottery pick status to suggesting theirs is a repeatable model is laughable.

You act like teams pay a player once upon arrival to the program, those 8-10 players currently with teams are still getting paid so it's not much if any different. Fans expecting 3 or 4 of the top 20 portal players are just being unrealistic. Unrealistic on BTB? No way! This team will be built much like UM or UL last season, a lot of names you don't know and will inspire angst with BTBers. It will be up to CDDV to build a cohesive unit. UL most mirrors IU's situation as they had 1 recruit and 13 transfers last season Their leading scorer...77th in the portal from JUM Their leading rebounder...218th in the portal from CU Their leader in assist and steal ... 101st from Wisc Their leader in blocks...274th from Charleston Others to average over 20 min/g ...273rd, 283rd, 309th If IU has that portal class this place will be unvisitable until at least 6-10 gamses into the season.
