Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)

I actually only know of two instances where an NBA coach has ever been traded to another team. -

No worries. I used the word "forced" because it had honestly not been done before. Most teams are willing to voluntarily release a coach without asking for something from another team in exchange. I think Indiana may be running into Ainge wanting something in return for Brad. I am not entirely sure that Ainge would be allowed to prevent Brad from coming to IU without an unconditional release. I would have to believe that Brad would have one hell of an anti-trust suit if they tried to pull those shenanigans. -

I actually didn't really make a judgment on whether it is right or wrong. Danny Ainge is a shrewd negotiator and he is not going to let anything of value go for free. -

If they wanted IU to pay Romeo's salary, they would just include a buyout addendum to Brad's contract. The original question was whether an NBA team could fund the buyout, and I would contend that they could via draft picks. I doubt it could be a straight cash exchange due to the crazy NBA trade balancing rules. -

I would actually be shocked if Danny wasn't trying to stick it to the Pacers for a draft pick in order to release Brad. I also wouldn't be shocked if he isn't trying to trade for another head coach after hearing that Brad is leaving. -

I don't think so. That is essentially what the Celtics forced the Clippers to do in order to release Doc Rivers. Danny made them cough up a first round pick in order to release Doc to sign with the team. -

Agree. Let's logic our way through this thing. Brad decides last night to go to IU. He tells Danny this morning. Danny tells him to give him 48 hours to figure out how the Celtics want to handle it. I would imagine that even after they figure out how to handle it, they still have to look for a new coach (if he isn't staying until the end of the season), put together a press release, prepare remarks for a presser, and tell the team before any of that can happen. It is entirely possible that nothing is announced until after their next game. Everybody take a deep breath. I realize that waiting sucks and we all are feeling snake-bitten by the Billy Donovan situation but these things take time and we just have to wait for the process to play out. -

The non compete in the contract would have to be in the interest of protecting an organization's legitimate business interests. All that said, I am sure that Brad just wants to be clear of the Celtics having rights to him and they are negotiating how much it will be for IU to purchase those rights (which are essentially worthless to Indiana). It would be difficult for the Celtic's to claim that preventing Brad from going to IU protects their legitimate business interests, but the larger point is that something that you really want to litigate? -

Because Ainge is a narcissist. He wants to have all of the control. He is the classic boss that says, "You can't quit, I am firing you". He realizes that Brad is gone, but for Ainge is has to be on his terms. That way he still feels like a big man who has all of the control. -

I was shocked when I learned that there was an offer of Myles Turner & Doug McDermott for Gordon Hayward and Ainge asked for Tuner & Oladipo. What a jerk. Apparently Hayward was begging to be traded to the Pacers because he wants to get back home. Until I listened to the Tate & Titus podcast I never really considered how toxic it must be in Boston for Hayward to want to get the hell out of there when he clearly loves Brad Stevens. I wouldn't be surprised if Ainge traded Hayward just to stick it to Brad to let him know that he is in charge. -

I agree with this. Ainge is an @$$. He has to win every trade and transaction. If he is holding an asset that is worth anything, he is going to make you grovel for it. Brad's contract is clearly worth something so I am sure he is making this as painful as possible. -

How about Mike Ehrmantraut? Jonathan Banks is an IU grad. He would certainly scare the hell out of me if I played for him. -

We all should know better! For me the difference this time around is that Dolson made a tough decision to fire Archie and is now not hiding behind a "Search Committee" to make the decision. He is owning his position and I am cautiously optimistic that he is going to bring in a great coach. Maybe that is Brad Stevens, maybe it isn't. I just feel better about the process this time around. -

I believe on HSN you posted that unless something major had changed it wouldn't be Brad Stevens. Please correct me if I am misremembering that. Is it possible that something major has changed? -
