$8.5M is his opt out. The $17M buyout is what the university would owe him if they fired him. His opt out drops to $7M on May 1st. -

You are correct. Buyouts essentially act as a way to guarantee a coach time and also act as a pre-negotiated severance package. I think that it is interesting that Bruce Pearl actually has two buyout clauses in his contract. One is a coach's buyout that acts like an opt out and the other is a university buyout that acts like a guarantee of time and a severance package. The coach's buyout is much lower than the university buyout, which is why there was initially confusion on the buyout total for BP. Why would you negotiate a lower buyout for your opt out if you intended for your contract to act as a lifetime contract? -

Stop! You post $hit on here all the time like it is fact. You told me for a fact that Mike Woodson isn't going anywhere. Not your ******* opinion, a FACT. So don't turn around and spew your bull$hit about how you are so open minded and on some higher level than everyone else, when YOU ALREADY HAVE YOUR MIND MADE UP. -

This was a strategic decision by Wisky. They want to keep Woodson in Indiana for a long time. -

It sounds like there won't be a job opening at IU. Woodson will either be replaced immediately or continue to be the coach. -

I think that they were reporting the university buy-out and not the coach's buy-out. The university buy-out is 50% of what is remaining on his contract through the 2027 season and 25% of what is remaining through the 2030 season. That works out to just over $17M. The coach's buyout is a lower amount. -

I am not sure where the $17M number came from. His buyout last year was $10M, it is $8.5M if he leaves before April 30, 2024, and it is $7M if he leaves after April 30, 2024. Auburn has a University Buy-out and a Coach's Buy-out. The university buy-out is significantly higher than the coach's buy-out. Think of the coach's buy-out as an opt out clause for the coach if he wants to leave, where the university buy-out is a severance package if they fire him. I don't know who Pearl's agent is, but he negotiated one hell of a contract for his client. -

So what is he going to do to fix that? It is going to be hard to have experienced players when everyone hits the portal. -

Will Dolson talk to the players to try to get a sense of who is leaving and try to understand why they are leaving? -

If we lose out (including the BTT) it would be 0-9 to end the season. -

I think that Dolson knows that he has to have a home run hire waiting with pen to paper before he fires Woody. This $hit played out so badly last time with Stevens, you can’t have a repeat incident. -

You reap what you sow. The players see their coach smoking cigars and yucking it up after a beatdown and they emulate his behavior. He doesn’t give a $hit or work hard, why should they? Their leader doesn’t cast a shadow, he casts a cloud of cigar smoke and bull$hit. The standard you ignore is the standard you set, and the standard that has been set is to party after an L and blame someone else. -

I think the equation may be a little more complicated than that. I don’t know $h!t, as evidenced by all of my posts on this site, but I am pretty sure this is a calculus problem. Dolson has to thread three needles. 1. Keep unhappy donors happy enough to keep donating. 2. Keep Woodson supporters happy enough to keep donating. 3. Keep the team from being so terrible that people stop supporting them. That is a hell of a balance to strike, especially considering that keeping Woodson supporters is the easiest path to keeping your job (since Woody is a nepobaby), but is also your most likely path to pissing off other donors and making the team terrible, which in turn would also lead to your demise. Have fun, Scotty D! -

I also don’t know if IU has been put in the position that they are now where donors were calling all of the shots. -

Unfortunately, I do think they could bring him back. Dolson sold his soul when he agreed to take donor money to pay Woodson. He is now in the donors’ pocket and I don’t think he has the mettle to do what is needed without the express authorization of his billionaire overlords. -

I am sorry to rant, but the more I think about it the more it pisses me off. I can’t believe that Woody is trying to rewrite history and act like he takes all the blame and always has. If I wanted someone to blow smoke up my a$$, I would sit at home with a box of cigars and a short length of hose. I don’t need a guy with a cigar and a glass of wine to do it for me. -

Is it sad that I am so cynical that I think he is just saying this stuff to show Dolson how he is taking personal responsibility and showing self awareness? Also, you said you won’t blame your players after you have blamed your players. WTF? It sounds like he is trying to placate people so he can come back next year.
