Been hearing this has been going on with Vonleh
DocLibby replied to NotTheReal HoosierHoopster's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
As an "insider" I doubt this is true HOWEVER it's snowing outside right now and it was 80 degrees yesterday. I hope that Noah's agent has him on a hush hush right now bc no one was a "talker" before draft. It causes skepticism and mistrust among future NBA teammates and no GM wants that cancer on a team. Believe nothing of what you hear and only half of what you see. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

My favorite article of the day by far (and not bc I'm in the title, teehee). It is actually very insightful and positive. You have to sift through a lot of BS today to find the good stuff. Although the players will have to adjust to a new roster, I believe it will be for the better. It's hard to play well for a team if you really do to want to be there. Noah HAD to leave. I would advised him to leave. It's too risky. And the others....well--GOOD LUCK. I teach my children that you are a product of the environment which you create. If your negative, then everything around you will take on that negativity as well. No matter where you go, your environment will follow you. Some players will hopefully remember that. [quote name="Adillac" post="50907" timestamp="1395403322"]Noah is not coming back next year. Let's get that out of the way. So, that means the Hoosiers will be lean in the front court. Naturally, that raises immediate and viable concerns. However, it has never been Crean's intention to utilize strong post players. Zeller got his touches and points largely from offensive rebounds, broken plays, and runouts. Vonleh averaged like 5 shots per game on a team with no other lottery NBA lottery picks and no good shooters. This fact has really irritated me about Crean but I guess I just have to accept that it's gonna be that way with Crean as coach. So be it. Now, on to why IU will be a top 10 team next year without a talented post player... As we saw from 2011-2013, Crean's system relies on spacing, driving, and 3 pt shooting. Those teams were pretty darn successful. Yogi is an all- conference caliber point guard. He is uncommonly strong driving and finishing in the lane and he has developed into an outside threat. Blackmon will be possibly the best pure scorer at the SG position in the Big10 as a freshman. He is that good. Mark it down- he will be conference freshman of the year. Yogi didn't have another elite guard to play alongside this year. I mean, Yogi can take his man off the dribble in basically every game he plays in but what guard was going to be the beneficiary of that penetration? Sheehey? Next year, Yogi can drive lane and kick out to either Blackmon or Johnson for 3 pt looks. Johnson is also an elite shooter. A writer at Scout.com thinks Blackmon and Johnson are the top two pure shooters in the class of 2014. That is big. Stanford Robinson is a talented guard who has a knack for getting to the basket. Maybe with some serious offseason work he could be a decent jump shooter by next season. Regardless, I see Stanford coming off the bench for Yogi and /or Blackmon and providing that second wave of attack from the perimeter. He could be as good a 6th man as there is in the conference. With some strength training and long hours in the gym working on his shot and his handle, Troy will be a beast. There aren't very many, if any, 6'7 wings in the league that have his length and athleticism. Hollowell was a huge disappointment as we all know, but barring a transfer, I think he returns and contributes more than last season. Crean won't need to experiment with his ball handling skills again as we will have that covered in spades next year. Hollowell could be used more traditionally next year as a 4, and that could lead to more production: rebounding and second- chance points. I'm not holding my breath over it but I still think there is a time and place for this kid to be successful as a Hoosier. Devin Davis and Perea will be solid rebounders and defenders with the occasional scoring outburst. It's looking like IU will get Anthony Lee from Temple as a 5th year transfer. This will be key for the Hoosiers. He is a 6'9 forward with a lot of experience. His numbers from last year are good: 13ppg, 8rpg. He could start and be solid, helping to shore up the loss of Vonleh. The Big10's best teams are losing a lot after this year. I'm not saying IU is going to necessarily win the conference title next year but I think they will be contending for it. No one in the league will have as good a backcourt as the Hoosiers. Yogi, Blackmon, Stan, and Johnson represent the best and deepest backcourt in the Big10 next year, hands down. As for the front court, consider this- what upper-echelon Big10 team this year had a dominant player in the post? No one, really. The game is and has been trending toward guards and wings and IU will be very strong in that area. The frontcourt duties will be handled by committee. Overall, I see IU running the fast break extremely well but also and most importantly, I see IU having an effective half court offense with Yogi, Blackmon, and Johnson creating effective spacing from their outside shooting. This will open the lane and baseline for Troy and Perea to really play more above the rim and behind the defense. The Hoosiers will be one of the best 3pt shooting teams in the league if not the country. I seriously think IU wins 25+ games next year. Call me crazy but I think we will be legit. Not sure about the "fake foot" injury that Noah "supposedly" had. I helped nurse that foot with suggestions on getting it better, so if he wasn't hurt then I've been duped as well as his teammates (unlikely). He doesn't come off as that kind of young man. Everyone knows where I stand on staying or leaving for the NBA (in my blog). It's no mystery that the entire draft is based off of potential. I happen to think he is more ready than Cody was and that's not saying much. He leaves because of the money. That's one reason why I like NCAA better than NBA. Student athletes have more love for the game. This chess board will move a lot of pieces before the summer is up. I'm just hoping it's all for the better. People may complain, but they will still keep watching IU ball. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Thoughts on a Season of Highs and Lows, and Noah — Will He Stay or Will He Go?
DocLibby posted a topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
First things first … Yogi not being named to All-Big Ten 1st Team is unbelievable. Naturally, I’m extremely biased, and perhaps some of you will agree with him being on the 2nd team (which no doubt is still an honor), but this is my post, so I get to vent. Is there a category for Most Improved? If not, there should be. No hard feelings though. It definitely gives us something to look forward to next year. We don’t hold grudges and we don’t focus on something we have no control over. But it will create a drive that will foster late night dates with a theme of hardwood floors and leather that is all too familiar for top NCAA basketball players. We shall live to see another year. Stronger. Better. Smarter. Inspired. Season of highs and lows comes to and end As we dribble toward the end of another season, we can’t help but look back at the good and bad times. Although the bad undoubtedly outshines the good this season, the Indiana University men’s basketball team once again created memories that will last a lifetime. We were able to rush the floor at least once this year. We won when we thought we should have lost and lost when we thought we should have won. A player became homesick. Expectations were shattered. New hope has been restored. We will no doubt live to see another year of highs and lows like an ESPN special … which I’m sure will be boycotted by me at some point during next years season. However, next season does hold promises. What will Noah do? We are certain of the talent that will be arriving. And, like clockwork, at the end of any season we worry who will stay and who will go. Some worry about Yogi’s timeline, but most overindulge on the idea of our star center Noah Vonleh. Despite the fact that we have shown that we can function without out him for one game, would we be able to develop into a team next season without a strong center? Yes, I have more information than most as to the expected future of the team, but I’m not privy to the last word on what Noah will do. I’m just as selfish as the rest of you when it comes to holding onto Noah for just one more year. As a parent of a star player, I’ve often wondered how I would counsel Yogi when it comes down to should he stay or should he go. Here’s the speech I would give Yogi (and Noah): The final decision is yours. It’s one that you have to live with, although many will have their input, no doubt loaded with persuasion that somehow fits into their own agenda. Should you decide to stay, you can improve on your already blooming skill set. You can help a team advance deep into an NCAA tournament. But you will also run the risks of injury or moving down the draft board as the pieces on this chess board are rearranged and reset after every season. If you are projected to go in the top 10 (with the understanding that nothing is guaranteed), then the money offered right now does not compare to what you will be offered at any other point in your life. You can always finish school. I encourage you to finish school. An uneducated person with money will soon become front and center in the unemployment line … dreaming of what once was. As the Bible says, a fool and his money are soon parted. Seek after your education with the same passion and consistency that you have for basketball. Fill the void that will most likely haunt you when the lights and fans have moved on to someone else. The average career of an NBA player is approximately 4.7 years. What will you do after you’re done? You can’t play basketball forever and an education gives you a solid future. No one can take away your education. Don’t become a washed up NBA player (60% go broke after being in the league). As Noah future remains ambiguous, I will sit in anticipation with the rest of the general public when he gives the final word on if he will stay or go. He’s got a fan for life, regardless of whatever he decides to do. The future is bright Hints of next year’s team are promising. Troy Williams is finding himself and realizing his potential. Stanford Robinson will be the slasher who will continue to find seemingly impossible ways to get to the basket. Jeremy Hollowell will gain the confidence he needs and emit the passion as a strong forward. Yogi will improve on balancing his role as a facilitator and playmaker. These young athletes are still pliable and developing. Coach Crean …. well, he’s Coach Crean. No doubt he will continue to recruit top players with the help of his staff. I’m confident he will look back over the last year and use it to evolve his game and coaching skills as well. The summer will be a time for reflection and growth. Big Ten Tournament Thursday we will be watching our Hoosiers enter into the Big Ten Tournament. As they work on their physical game this week, I hope that they have the mental stability to play 40 minutes of fundamentally sound basketball that is not plagued with sloppy ball handling and poor shot selection. After each inevitable missed field goal, I pray for a lazy short term memory of the players as they keep up energy and enthusiasm during these taxing end of the season rituals where only one team will remain standing. If Indiana can win a tough matchup against a hot Illinois team, then #1 Michigan will await. I’m sure Michigan isn’t excited about a potential matchup, because they know that the Hoosiers will give them a run for their money … especially on neutral territory. The bigger they are, the harder they fall. I’ve said more than once: You rank ‘em, we spank ‘em. On Yogi’s Recruitment and the Impact of Social Media (Plus a Message to the Naysayers)
DocLibby posted a topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Yogi’s 5th grade AAU picture I decided to give this blog post to the fans. I gave the readers an opportunity to ask me some questions this time around. Question: What was Yogi’s recruitment like? (via @MisterFindley) As many of you know, recruiting started fairly early in the Ferrell household. Once the article placing Yogi at the top of the fifth grade hoopers list was released, things became a bit different. No, the colleges did not start calling and setting up unofficial visits, but the AAU games became a bit more crowded. He was recruited at that time … by other AAU teams. A mini-recruiting frenzy you could say. Some good. Some bad. Yogi definitely had a target on his back. It was good to see things die down after he was removed from the AAU circuit. He took time to be a kid and interact more with his siblings. Serious inquires from colleges started late in middle school. It started with a letter or two, mainly showing the beauty of some of the campuses. There were some incognito visits by assistant college coaches hidden deep in crowds full of fans (yup, I saw you). Or, a friend of a friend who knows somebody… who knows somebody … who coaches at a particular university. (But no, no rules were broken, so don’t go calling up the NCAA regulations board.) As the years passed, the interest grew. I had to sift through mail that was no longer my own. This was Yogi’s mailbox now. I think I opened more mail than he did. It was exciting to see the interest from pretty much every Big Ten school. Florida was definitely high on the interest list as well. We heard from schools as far away as University of Seattle (I think I may have “accidentally” misplaced those letters) and as close as Butler. I can’t say that any one school was overzealous or pushy. Nevertheless, it was some relief that Yogi verbally committed to Indiana at the beginning of his junior year at Park Tudor. Some recruiters said “It ain’t over ’til the fat lady sings,” and this of course meant that the calls did not completely stop until he signed his letter of intent to play at IU. Recruiters obviously have been able to sway some individuals or families into reconsidering their college, but Yogi never second guessed it. He wanted to play with Cody Zeller, his AAU and Adidas teammate. Yes, Cody helped to sway his decision. As they say, the rest is history. Question: How does social media impact teams, players, and families? (via @Brock_Iseminger) Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram (among others) are giving people a whole new sense of bravery, believing it allows them to utter every positive or negative thought they have about Indiana Basketball and its players. That old saying of “If you can’t say something nice, then don’t say it at all” has gone out the window. Despite the fact that we love Yogi so much, it does not stop the opposition from digging in when they can. I’ve read everything from “How could anyone name their kid Yogi?” to “Why won’t he get a haircut?” and “What a ball hog!” and “He is so overrated!” Then some things even get down right personal and racially motivated. Yogi is heavy into social media, as most young adults are, but he is not at all influenced by the negative words. Fortunately, I have a young man who doesn’t let too many things or people get to him. He is truly a down to earth kid. He is genuine. When it comes to his game, he is harder on himself than any one person or negative comment could ever be. He understands that he is only as good as his last game. Anti-fans will use the veil of social media to unload their frustrations no matter who it hurts. Coaches understand this. They have even gone as far a banning players from interacting online in any capacity. We all know the recent story of Iowa coach Fran McCaffery, who demanded his team shut down their Twitter accounts until the end of the season after a fan and a player did some mud-slinging. Of course, I don’t get the same attention Yogi does, but if you’re messing with him, you’re messing with me … and I’ve done my share of using Twitter to lash out. It’s easy to get emotional, and I have fallen victim to it. Some may remember the one-way exchange I had with Jeff Rabjohns when he leaked the story of where Yogi would be attending college. Jeff and I are friends now (so don’t try to start anything), but I was guilty of inappropriately unloading on Twitter because it was an easy outlet. It felt good at the time (really good actually), but it was probably an exchange that I should have been handled with a bit more tact. And a few words on the game in Madison (plus a message to the naysayers) I lulled myself into a false sense of security by halftime on Tuesday night during the IU-Wisconsin game. Perhaps I was still nibbling on the success we had at Northwestern. We played well for 20 minutes against Wisconsin. Actually, we played well for 40 minutes, but we failed to adjust our defense after they changed their offense. It was like listening to “The Song That Never Ends.” Or in our case “The Game That Never Ends.” The season drags on. This loop, sports fans, is on repeat. The second half has become our enemy. My signature is on the imaginary petition for no halftimes that was started by Assembly Call’s Andy Bottoms. It’s so hard to look away, and on some nights it is difficult to watch the games. However, I will continue to support this team, like a faithful fan should. Sure, it’s easier for me because I have a son who shines, but I challenge you to hang in there for better days. Adopt Yogi if you must. I fear the crowd is getting restless though. I am beginning to feel like Will Smith in the movie “I Am Legend” as the ravaging fans come out as the night falls on this very talented team. I am searching for the few folks who haven’t had the life sucked out of them. Naysayers, please spare the true fans your commentary. Say something nice or don’t say it at all.
