Player and Recruit Retention News/Discussion & Potential Transfers
Hardwood83 replied to Brass Cannon's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I don't disagree with you, if he's really ready to go, then go. I would say that the overseas option isn't going to change by staying next year. So why not return, get your degree and see how the new staff/team works out? -

Gotcha, that makes sense. -

I know nothing about this kid's story, but at the risk of jumping off the tracks, are you two suggesting "Racism" is strictly a one-way street? If so then I believe you have bought into an ideology rather than observed reality in the world at large. If not then, what are you saying? -

I completely agree and would also argue it hasn't done the NBA any favors either. Drafting kids based on "potential" is a bad plan, but they apparently feel compelled to. If that pressure was off the NBA could draft players based on their actual skills rather than raw measurements and athleticism. How utterly ridiculous that Jr & Sr's are punished because you have a body of work to evaluate that shows their strengths & weaknesses. Freshmen are relative blank slates that might be spectacular. It's reminds me of penny stock speculating. There are a (very) few guys that are NBA ready out of High School, no reason to make them go through a 1 yr college charade if they don't want to. And no one HAS to go to college, overseas is an option too. I think the NFL and especially MLB approach makes way more sense for everyone. -

I don't know anything about Henry, but looks like he has a B1G body. -
Clearly he's not a hot commodity, but doesn't it seem like it's pretty common for coaches to take a year and do TV or something?

#IUBASE - 3 game series @ Purdue
Hardwood83 replied to ccgeneral's topic in Other Indiana Hoosiers Athletics
Yes, it's a risk so I am a little concerned about that. Miller wasn't one of my top picks but I like what he's doing so far (retaining players, bringing in a strong staff, etc) so we'll see. Atlantic 10 isn't the B1G, but a good coach should succeed, especially with the resources IU offers. -

I feel the same way, but it is very possible IU will lose 3-4 guards between now and next year (Josh, RoJo, JBj & Gelon), so will be plenty of room. -
Archie Miller's staff at Indiana will be Bruiser Flint, Tom Ostrom (Dayton) and Ed Schilling (UCLA),

Further down it mentions Lorenzo Romar had dinner with Sean Miller earlier this week. Arizona lost an Assistant to go coach UCSB. Apparently Romar can recruit, the talent they could draw would be scary if he joined the 'Zona staff. -
Who's declaring/transferring around NCAA 2017?

I'd cheer for rectal cancer before I cheered for that laundry. My sincere apologies to rectal cancer for the association with Kentucky. -

No matter their W-L record they are failures BECAUSE they are Kentucky. -

I think you read too much into what I wrote. I never advocated "Creaning" him or anyone else. Could Grant develop into a contributor at IU? Of course he could. I doubt it happens though, that is why I mentioned "him" realizing his future is murky at IU, but he could play more elsewhere. That is my opinion, but will be his decision. I don't follow him, nor anyone else, on social media. -

I think the absolute best case scenario for Gelon at this point is him realizing it's best to move on, finding a D-II school where he can have an immediate impact, play 3 more years, meet a nice girl and live happily ever after. -

So to update, Miller is meeting with all 3 LOI commits this week. There has at least been some positive indication that Newkirk, Johnson, Hartman, Morgan, McSwain & Davis are back. Nothing said, but assumed: Green, Jones, Gelon & Priller too. Possible NBA/Pro: OG, JBJ & Bryant Is that right? -

I'm buying what you're selling. I am not a fan of "position-less" or 3 guard line-ups. No reason to come up with anything fancy. UNC (spits) just won a NC (spits again) with a basically traditional line-up that plays good, fundamental ball. IU just needs to get back to doing it too. Talented players + fundamentals= lots o wins. -

Agreed. I feel the same way about Asst's as the head coach- get the absolute best available. I would LOVE to have IU guys on staff- if they deserve it, but not just to check some box. -
So what is the incentive to being a clean program?
Hardwood83 replied to Brass Cannon's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I would argue that what Carolina did was worse then Louisville. If an (allegedly prestigious) University like NC commits gross academic fraud, that cuts to it's very purpose for existing. At least at Louisville it was only the basketball program, not (as far as I know) the school itself. Granted laws and rules were broken and they most certainly should (but we all know won't) be severely punished. UNC should get a version of the death penalty. Make them field a team of all walk-ons for 2-3yrs. 0 Scholarships. The NCAA literally just rewarded cheating, not likely that will be a disincentive to others. -

Would love for you to be right, but I'm not seeing it. Put it this way, would you want your favorite NBA team to draft JBJ in the first round? I sure wouldn't. -

With no back-up center Davis needs to stay healthy too. Or else it's back to Collin playing center and I doubt that is what he's coming back for. -

Agreed. Priller only takes a scholarship for one more year. Jones can contribute. Gelon is the most likely, imo, if someone has to go. -

Yes, there is no doubt the issues his teams had over time reflect the coach. Leadership and direction are very important. Having said that I don't give the players a free pass. It's not like Crean was telling them "play matador defense!" or "throw the ball away regularly without any pressure". Crean allowed it to happen repeatedly and obviously didn't put them in the best position to succeed, so it's ultimately his fault. But I still say all of these guys have played enough ball at a high enough level to know not to do the dumb stuff they did. They aren't poor mis-guided children that were duped into playing mind-numbingly stupid basketball, they get some of that blame too. -
Congratulations, The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem!

That is fair. I've been griping, but it isn't Miller's at fault. First, I don't doubt that Miller is a good coach and as far as I can tell he's a great guy. Second he's not Alford, so that is good. My disappointment stems from wanting an established winner, not an "up and comer." Obviously Donovan would have been fantastic, but I would have even preferred Bennett or Marshall, guys that have consistently won at a high level at different schools. They aren't risks. It's great that Miller had some success in the A-10 and "has potential" and that National media and other coaches like him. I don't care, I want IU to win consistently and immediately. Not in 3yrs, now. I don't care if Miller could be here for 25yrs, I want to win right away, not after he's established himself. There was a lot of discussion about "is IU an elite job, still a blue-blood?" etc. I believe we have our answer now. When the elite schools have an opening they don't hire someone with potential, they hire the absolute best known commodity (see most recent hires at Kansas, KenSucky, No Carolina & Louisville, for example.) So long story short, I don't think hiring Miller screams "IU is serious about dominating the B1G and returning to National Prominence!" It says "we found a nice coach that can grow into the role and might be really good" Some will say "He's the best we could get!" Maybe, but if so that is Glass' fault too. Do better. I guess I took the Glass press conference to heart and expected a big-time hire. Best case scenario now is that Miller makes me look like an idiot with his outstanding success.
-
That is a reasonable approach. Consistent, high-level results in 4yrs or they both go.
-
Ehhh, he's not a train-wreck hire like Alford, Hoiberg or Fife- but from what I've read not really sure Glass even looked for, let alone hired, the best coach available. Seems like he settled for a reasonably hot name, over paid him and banked on the fact he's new and shiny (ie NOT Crean). Completely under-whelmed. I think Miller is in over his head, but can't blame him. Glass choked under pressure. I read on here last night that Donovan said IU never contacted him. THAT is pathetic.
