I would relish a Brownell rejection. It would be embarrassing if IU actually contacted him, but I want nothing to do with his painful mediocrity.

Easy to feel that way and certainly true to a degree, but as othes have mentioned, Loserville and pUKe just went through this a year ago and pulled in guys clearly down their list. As much as I detest Kentucky, they have cache...and that got them Mark Pope. The dynamics of college basketball have shifted so dramatically in the last 5yrs it's hard to say what the new normal is. There are tons of variables at play and timing is huge. IU almost certainly could have gotten May last year, but dropped the ball, so now have to live with the current landscape of who's available and willing.

I have to agree, reality isn't that great. I'd rather pretend IU is getting a good coach instead of Mr. Mediocrity, Brad Brownell. That is sad and discouraging.

Excellent point. I agree with what BGleas posted recently. The "negotiation" would be pretty simple and quick, not weeks & months of back & forth, will he? won't he? If it did? Huge red flag.

You sweet summer child. I love that you live in a world where this would be possible! This is a officially the "General Coach Candidate stream of conciousness" thread.

You are correct in that comparison, excellent point. Similarities in extremely poor coaching hires after the legendary coach and losing their identity. Neb unable to run the ball or play defense!? IU unable to shoot or hit FT's!? IUBB does have the advantage of a much stronger recruiting base. Neb FB needs most of their skill talent from Florida, Texas where they compete with everyone, IUBB could still do well pulling most of their roster from within 4-5hrs of campus. I'd also say basketball is easier to build & maintain. Which makes the last 30yrs all the more discouraging......

Sorry, I thought it was clear I was being a super condescending d!ck. Read that again dripping with thinly veiled contempt and you'll get my drift.

No one here has the slightest idea. But since nature abhors a vacuum we've convinced ourselves that IU will be lucky to get Brad Brownell if we triple his salary and beg. Apparently "we" expected the next coach to be hired 15 mins after Woodson's announcement..... in February. The fact it hasn't been announced can only mean the absolute worst possible outcome. Fortunately we've had a lots of posters repeat this over....and over....and over. It's been an impressive pooling of ignorance. So yeah 40 pages of that.

What HAVEN'T we argued about yet? History!! How about this- Vicksburg was more important to ending the war than Gettysburg. Discuss. Here's some trivia for you: John Tyler was the 10th President, born in 1790. He has 2 grandsons that are still living! He had children late in life and so did his son. Remarkable. What does this have to do with IU's coaching search? You know what John Tyler did not have? A beard.....make of that what you will. Video

Fair point, BUT IUFB literally had nothing to lose. IUBB is a different story.

That is the key to me. Beard is a good coach, but not outstanding. Regardless of his personal issues, IU can do better, IMO. If Beard was a choir-boy with a spotless reputation he still isn't top tier.

Your assesment is reasonable. I just hope it doesn't come to that, since I have no interest in Cronin. He's got a decent enough record....I just hate that evil little leprechaun.

Kinda where I am. I don't think he's the best "coach". His quality as a human being is another story. Not saying he's terrible or not an improvement, but IU can do better.

Still Worth it. Woodson is a total loser in every way, he has showed his ceiling is under-performing with solid talent. The good news is IU doesn't need 8-10 top tier candidates. They need one. No, it's not gonna be Brad Stevens, not likely Dusty May either, but there are other coaches that are 2-3 levels above Woodson, even if they aren't big names.

I understand not all success is a straight up path. Also, recognize that, Collins for instance, could do better at IU than NW with better resources. Having said that, why reward mediocrity? I believe the goal is for IU to hire the best option available, not merely someone that "isn't a complete train-wreck "or even "has some potential." Identify the best option and pursue. Repeat until you have a coach. Of course there will be trade-offs and sacrifices, there are no perfect options. If the best coach IU can get it Richard Pitino, Jr? Well, I guess that mean Purdue is right, IU sucks and we get what we deserve.

If coaches are getting T'd up at a 3rd grade game someone is taking themselves way too seriously. From your description, sounds like the refs in this case. Reffing little guys is a thankless job for sure, but they should have been embarrassed responding like that.
