Yes, Recruiting and development do go hand and hand (you are subtly changing you original statement) You stated he failed to develop players last year. My point was that he failed in recruiting so he didn’t even have the type of perimeter players to develop this past year (ie it was a recruiting fail). In regards to “any freaking coach can buy talent”…Actually that is correct as every freaking coach is buying talent. I would bet that this year every single player (HS player or portal transfer) on every top 25-30 team will be “bought”. I wish we had 3-4 HS guys coming in and only needed a couple of portal guys but even in that scenario every one of those guys would be bought/receiving $$$$$. It’s just the way it is.

The amount of made-up BS stuff being thrown around is more than I ever recall. There are many posts in which there is zero chance the poster is in a position to know if their statement is remotely true. A couple months ago we had the pleasure of reading many “takes” that Ware was shutting it down for the NBA (entitled, selfish, why we shouldn’t recruit a 5 star, doesn’t care etc etc) but instead he came back and initially was clearly playing hurt. Since then the made up shite has snowballed to an even greater degree.

It would have been difficult to develop Bates this year as the coaching staff’s commute back and forth to Missouri would have been a grind. Anyway, I stand by my point that recruiting, not development, was the issue as Leal, X, Gallo, Gunn and Cupps didn’t have a lot of one year developmental upside. That being said, once you moved the goal post to the need to recruit via the portal, I agree with that point. As far as “buying talent” being put in a negative light….It is what it is. Let’s face it, every guy we go after is going to be “bought” either by us or another team.

One of the “hot” coaches, Byington, won’t be hot after a few years at Vandy…LOL

It’s an indictment of Woodson not landing talented offensive perimeter players. He bombed in the portal last year (from a perimeter standpoint. Ware was a great get) and recruiting this year (so far). Who was he going to develop on the perimeter this year? The only choices were X, Gallo, Cupps, Gunn and Leal. The way X played I would argue none of those 5 would start for any of the top 5 of so seeded teams (Gallo would have been an important 6th man for some of them). MM could be considered a perimeter guy and he developed. We will see if someone else develops Gunn but I don’t think we will see a whole lot unless he steps down to a Ball State type of team.

Banks reminds me a bit of Geronimo. Both athletic and many expected both to develop. Geronimo did get twice as many minutes at Maryland vs his junior year at IU. With that extra playing time he got to shoot twice as many threes which he shot at a blistering 17% pace, had twice as many turnovers vs assists, shot a career worst 43% from the field, etc. Sometimes it’s lack of development but sometimes the guys just aren’t all that good.

I’m admittedly not a long-term aficionado of women’s basketball game but man I have been surprised at how physical the games have been and how the refs let them play (while, of course like the men’s refs, occasionally calling touch and/or phantom fouls).

Winner gets the chance to beat the shite out of S. Carolina…..or something like that.

UVA has scored 11 points, in nine second half minutes, but compared to the first half it feels like a run. A scoring deluge.

3/4 of number 1 UCONN’s guards, including their leading scorer, arrived at UCONN via the portal, not HS. Yes, Dickinson and Love were proven out of high school but they are still portal guys. Knecht did join a core of guys, as you stated, but he is scoring 10 more points that their next leading scorer which seems to indicate he was an important portal guy to land. I don’t get the take that “it doesn’t count” if they have been at their current school more than this current season. Do you consider Lander at WKU a portal guy or has that designation expired because it’s his second year there ?

It’s not mis-leading at all. Everyone I referenced were portal guys and I was responding to the comment that portal guys rarely impact teams. They do. I didn’t say they all switched this past season. UCONN’s leading scorer, Newton, arrived at UCONN via the portal, played at East Carolina for three years but you don’t count him as a portal guy? Doesn’t make sense.

Portal guys can help….a lot. The top 2 scorers for #1 UCONN are portal guys. 3/4 of their top scoring guards are portal guys. #1 seed UNC has four double point a game scorers. 2/4 of them are portal guys. #1 seed Houston’s leading scorer is a portal guy #2 seed Arizona’s top FOUR scorers are all portal guys #2 seed Iowa State’s leading scorer is a portal guy as are 2/4 of their double point a game guys (and 6/8 of their top scorers) #2 seed Tennessee’s leading scorer is a portal guy (21.9 a game and their next highest scorer is at 11.9) Many other examples such as Kansas top 2 scorers are portal guys, etc etc etc.

They will make less than they did this year but I’m going to guess they (Gunn/Banks/Sparks) assumed , or were told, that the bank $$$ would be closed for them next year.

No matter what happens, or how bad it gets, there is no way (zero chance) the fan base will be permanently fractured if someone comes in at some point and starts winning in a big way. A Final Four etc would bring back the “Ill never watch or support IU again” crowd.
