Coach Curt Cignetti to INDIANA

Better a search committee than a Fred Glass who hires the first guy whose office he surfs past on his way to pick up his Hawaiian button down from the dry cleaners. -

That dude was on a rant yesterday blaming everyone and their brother for IU’s failures. It was Tom Allen-esque with the way it’s everyone’s fault except for Tom’s. The ‘lack of support’ isn't the reason we lost many of the games we lost. -

The inverse is true too. Take over IU, have a few years of success, and some big name programs are going to be calling your name. Even if you get fired after, say, 5 years at IU, that’s $25 million in earnings. Kevin Wilson made $1.4 million/year as an OC at OSU after he got fired, which is more than what Candle makes now as a head coach. Unless you go full Mel Tucker there are plenty of jobs in college football that will pay a pretty penny in the event it doesn’t pan out at IU. -

It’s certainly a different landscape, but how much did being at a school like Northwestern hurt his ability to adapt to the new landscape? Both with NIL and with admissions? NU has an acceptance rate of 7%. There’s some wiggle room with athletes, but it’d be a different story at IU. And hey I’ll admit that I don’t know a lot of the names being thrown around (I like the mention of Whisky’s old coach), so maybe there are far better realistic options out there. -

Chances are whoever we hire will have a worse resume than Fitz.. -

Northwestern started playing football in 1882. Fitz took over in 2006. Northwestern made six bowl during that span. Fitz made 10 bowl games between 2006 and 2022. He won at least six games in 11 seasons. He had three 10 win seasons and two other 9 win seasons. He won 5 bowl games. Sure he fizzled out in his last four seasons, but he won at least six games in 10 of 12 years before his last four seasons. 9 bowl games in 12 years (IU has played 13 bowl games in our entire history). At freaking Northwestern. If you’re thumbing your nose at him, who would you be happy with? Dude would be a grand slam hire for IUFB. -

Crazy that an average/above average QB on the worst team in the Big 10 is being offered that kind of money. -
I just really hate the ‘woe is us, who would want to come here’ attitude. Yeah, we’re not a good football program. We’re not going to go poach a rockstar. But we’re not a charity case either. We have solid things to offer. With NIL, the transfer portal, and conference realignment, it’s a new world in college football. We raised $20 million to fire Tom, which I didn’t think we could do. No reason we can’t go make a solid hire.
-
To take a job in a top 2 conference making $5+ million a year? I’d sure hope so.

Let’s gooooooo. Christmas came early. Now let’s not hire a goofball this time.

He fizzled out at the end, but before that he won at least 6 games in 10 of 12 seasons, including two 10 win and two 9 win seasons. The program had went to 6 bowl games in its history and he made it to 10 of them. Northwestern has much tougher academic standards than IU, so he wouldn’t have to worry about that here. Plus he’s only 48 years old. I’d love for IU to get him. -

Maybe CTA is a good guy, maybe he’s not. The only CTA I know is the guy who goes out and loses every Saturday and then points the finger at everyone but himself afterwards. Maybe he’s a different guy in private. I don’t think anyone blames Allen for the contract. If someone offers you an incredible deal you take it. I do blame him, though, for the abysmal team he’s trotted out the past 3 years. -

Just knowing the way IU is, I see zero chance that we hire Fitzgerald. But he would be a grand slam hire. -

And look, I acknowledge that the AD couldn’t really have sat back and done nothing at the time if other programs were sniffing around. But between the buyout number and the automatic extension for bowl seasons (which apparently Allen didn’t even ask for), it seems like we went way overboard when it wasn’t necessary. It doesn’t seem like he really stopped to consider IU’s ‘out’ in the event things went south. Even if Dolson finds the money, that’s money that could’ve been spent on other parts of the program. -

Heading into the 2021 season, Tom Allen had the 4th biggest buyout in all of college football. The top 5 at that time? Jimbo Fisher, Dabo Swinney, Nick Saban, Tom Allen, and Ryan Day. One of those 5 is not like the others… https://247sports.com/longformarticle/college-football-coaching-buyout-ranking-the-10-most-expensive-jimbo-fisher-dabo-swinney-nick-saban-ryan-day-173603213/amp/ Surely there’s a middle ground between “investing heavily in the program” and doing what IU did after the 2020 season. An AD shouldn’t allow himself to become a prisoner of the moment. The 2019 team didn’t beat a single team with a winning record and the 2020 season was played under utterly bizarre circumstances. Our AD let his emotions guide him and gave Allen a bigger buyout than OSU had for Ryan Day. The other schools on that top 5 list can easily afford huge buyouts. IU, not so much. The AD’s horrible decision after 2020 is the only reason it’s even a question whether they’re going to fire a guy who has went 3-24 in conference play over his last three seasons. At any other P5 program it wouldn’t even be a question that he’s gone. -

People would say all the time how great hiring someone like Tom Allen is because “if he succeeds at Indiana he’ll stay forever!” If giving him a top 5 buyout in the entire country was the only way to get him to stay, how much does his ‘willingness to stay’ really matter? Giving him such an enormous buyout was a horrible decision. -
What an incredible throw and catch in the Alabama game. God I love college football.
-
3-24 in conference play the past three seasons. If that doesn’t get you fired then idk what to say.
-
Fire Tom Allen now. No need to wait until the end of the game.
-
Tom ‘full diaper’ Allen shows up every time we’re in a one possession game. Then again, we see what happens when he doesn’t play not to lose (MSU last week) and it’s equally depressing. He’s just an atrocious coach who has no business being a P5 head coach.
-
If Allen still has a job this time Sunday evening it will be an enormous bat signal from Dolson that he couldn’t care less about football. Will be an interesting two days.

Screwing up off the court before the season even starts and then severely underwhelming on it once it does isn’t a good combination when it comes to endearing yourself to the fan base. Especially when you’re a highly touted recruit. -

Woodson is an improvement over Archie (would be hard not to be), but he’s not elite. And he doesn’t recruit at a high enough level to the point that he wouldn’t need to be elite, a la Calipari. So this is what we get. -

The reality is that we lost a ton and didn’t bring in enough to make up for it. And that was from an above average but not great IU team last year. We’re in for a rough season. Our outside shooting is utterly nonexistent, which is not how you want to play in 2023. We’re very weak on the perimeter. We heard so much about how Woodson doesn’t like playing with multiple big guys but was forced to do so with Trayce/Race. Well, neither are here anymore yet our frontcourt is still our only positive. -

MM is looking very disappointing. Nothing about him says 5-star talent.
