Soon to RETIRE Coach Woodson Thread

Mike Woodson is shameless when it comes to excuse making. The idea that he was caught off guard by JHS going pro is so utterly ridiculous. -

I doubt it. None of them really give any signs that they get particularly upset about losing. Woodson doesn’t strike me as a particularly demanding coach. They get paid a lot of money in NIL. They’re probably pretty content with their lives right now. -

It was unnecessary, arguably unwarranted, and (I think) raised the buyout figure in the event of a disaster like this season. No one was coming to hire Woodson away from us. His first two seasons were better than Archie’s tenure but nothing to get overly excited about. I just really don’t think a nearly 25% raise was deserved at the time. It was a classic IU overreaction to positive developments. -

I don’t disagree that culture guys are important. I just don’t know that we need to have 3 of them all on scholarship. If your 1-11 guys are good enough then it’s probably fine. But, well, Woodson’s roster isn’t even good enough 1-5 lol. -

Ehh… of the bolded names, Galloway is the only one I’d want to see back, and I wouldn’t be all that sad if he left. Leal and Sparks are dead weight imho, and Cupps has a lot of ground to make up to be a serviceable player in the Big 10. We need a big talent infusion and those three aren’t doing it for me. -

I don’t know for certain, but the press release at the time makes it sound like he decided to give it to him: ”Upon his arrival, Coach Woodson immediately re-inserted our program into the national conversation both in terms of an elevated level of success on the court and in recruiting," said IU Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Dolson. "I knew that returning our program to the level that Hoosier fans rightfully expect would be a process that wouldn't happen overnight. I have been extremely pleased with the steps we have taken during the last two years. I believe under Coach Woodson's leadership, we have positioned the program to compete at the highest levels in recruiting, which in turn will enable us to compete at the highest levels within the Big Ten and in the NCAA Tournament." -

Idk how Scott Dolson could believe that this season is just a “fluke.” All the signs were there during Woodson’s first two seasons. Year 1 - we lose 7 of our last 9 games to finish the regular season, including 5 straight losses in February. We manage to win a couple of games in the conference tournament to sneak into the NCAA tournament, only to lose by 29 points in the first round. Year 2 - we go into the season with sky high expectations. So many talks about this is the “deepest IU team in X years.” Had an ok but not great regular season. Lose by 16 points in the second round to a higher seed. Finish 23-12 Big brain Dolson decides those results merit a million dollar raise. Woodson belly flops during portal season. Year 3 - Without an all-time great player in TJD to hide some or the warts, they’re all on display in Mike Woodson’s third season. Lose to UConn by 20 points. Lose to auburn by 28 points. Lose to Nebraska by 16 points. Lose to Purdue by 21 and 20 points. Lose to Wisconsin by 12 points. Lose to Penn State by 14 points. Throw everyone under the bus and blame everyone except yourself. Can’t wait to see what year 4 has in store for us. -

People on here get upset when folks “attack his character,” but Mike Woodson’s attitude absolutely stinks. He exhibits an arrogance that a coach with his college coaching track record really has no business exhibiting. -

His legacy as a player 40+ years ago will be completely overshadowed by his failures as head coach. When people think “Mike Woodson/IU basketball,” this is what they will remember. -

I can’t believe we’re stuck with another year of Mike Woodson because Dolson pinky promised him four years lmao. -

We’re 8-6 WITH Xavier this season. 4 of those wins were against mid majors. 3-5 in conference play. I’m so sick of Mike Woodson and the IU administration. We need a completely overhaul from top to bottom. -
But but but firing Mike Woodson would be bad publicity!!

I want him. He gone to as many sweets 16s since 2018 as IU has gone to in my lifetime. He’d be much better than Dusty. -

Louisville getting Musselman while we’re stuck with another season of Mike Woodson would be absolutely brutal. -

That’s how I’ll remember him. I wasn’t alive when he was a player at IU. Heck, my parents were in elementary school when he was. His tenure as coach will be the only memories I have of him. Wine, cigars, and Ls. The Mike Woodson way. -

Dolson will probably give him another $1 million raise like he did after Woodson achieved the unthinkable and took us to back to back NCAA tournament blowout losses. -

It’s the ‘woe is us’ defeatist attitude that the administration wants us to have so they can excuse cheaping out and making a mediocre hire. It’s not “IU can’t.” It’s “IU won’t.” Use some of that surplus and offer $7 million a year. If you still can’t get a proven coach (they definitely could) then just shut down the program completely. -

Literally no one is saying that. We’re saying we don’t want to hire a mid major coach with one great season in his coaching career at a time when the program is on life support. -
