IUBB @ Penn State - Saturday, 02.24.24 @ Noon on BTN
Hoosierfan2017 replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I cannot stand this guy. I never want to hear the name Mike Woodson again after this season. -
Nothing iubb-related pisses me off more and makes me want to support the team less than the ‘blame the fans’ take. The fanbase is the only good thing this pathetic program has left.
-
He’s already there actually lol. 27-28
-
This would be the worst case scenario because it would ensure another season of Mike Woodson ‘basketball.’
-
If you need nuance to sell a coaching hire, you’re fighting an uphill battle.
-
It’s already mostly gone, imo. Fans are pretty sick of him. But it could be fixed with time. If he comes back for another year though, he will completely destroy his IU legacy.
-
The Shrewsbury talk is going to turn me into a Dust man. Three years as a head coach, one winning season, and an overall 45-47 record. That’s not what I’m looking for… at all.
-
I would be surprised if a donor shelled out $12 million for a risky hire like Dusty May. If I was shelling out that kind of cash, I’d want to know that IU was going to hire a proven commodity. Imagine being the donor who shelled out $10 and then watched IU hire Mike Woodson lol.
-
I think he’d be a great hire but it sounds like he’s a weirdo.
-
Is Pearl really backdoor lobbying? Because if he is, retaining Woodson would 100% be a fireable offense.
-
The history of speaking highly of the IU opportunity is mentioned as a reason why Pearl would consider leaving Auburn for IU, not as a big plus in his favor.
-
Dusty May is certainly a legitimate P5 coaching candidate and he very well could succeed at IU or another P5 school. I’ve never said that he couldn’t. But I 100% believe that the fervent desire for him expressed by some is because he was a manager at IU. The IU connection is important for some people. It doesn’t matter at all to me. A coach could be an alum of Pyongyang University of Science and Technology for all I care. I want as risk-free of a hire as we can get. If we swing and miss and then end up with Dusty May, fine. We could (and have!) done worse. But in no world would he be my first swing, or even my third.

Folks are really overstating the “everyone wins at Dayton” stuff. Archie went to four straight ncaa tournaments. Dayton had been to four ncaa tournaments in 21 years before Archie took over. You’d think he took over the Duke of mid major programs. There’s a lot of revisionist history when it comes to Archie.
-
I picked a school at random to make my point that if he didn’t have any IU affiliation, fans wouldn’t be so adamant about him. Coincidentally he actually was an assistant at Eastern Michigan. Schools are going to take a look at him because he’s the flavor of the month. Guys going deep into the tournament and parlaying that into a better job is nothing new. I simply have no appetite for another rebuild. Absolutely none. My fandom can’t take more of it.
-
You can a say that you don’t care that he was an IU manager, but it’s 100% clouding peoples judgment. Folks are talking themselves into Cinderella because he used to wear IU slippers. When you take over a program with no history, you have no expectations. You deal with zero pressure. You don’t compete against premier schools for recruits. You can just slowly build your program along the way. IU fans want to win now. They’re not going to stick around patiently for Dusty May to slowly build a team. He’s not winning 54% of his games at IU and getting a fifth season. I want a coach who has proven he can win at the highest level of college basketball. That’s not Dusty May.
-
Archie Miller went to an elite eight and made four straight tournaments before coming to IU. His last four years at Dayton he went 26-11, 27-9, 25-8, and 24-8. Overall he won 69% of his games, and 67% of his conference. Yes, he had a better resume at the time IU hired him than Dusty May currently has. Why do the Dusty fans have such a hard time accepting that he's a very risky hire in a lot of people’s minds? If he was Dusty May, former Central Michigan manager, the desire would not be nearly as strong. But, he’s an “IU guy,” so his question marks get looked past.
-
He’d give me less hope than I had when Archie was hired. Archie had a much better resume. I just can’t get excited about a mid major guy with May’s resume. Not when the program is in the state that it’s in.
-
I wouldn’t be happy with Dusty but I would be happy to be rid of Woodson. So overall I would probably be happy.
-
He’s the same age as the football coach we just hired. Hiring someone with a shortish shelf life isn’t ideal, but Pearl and Woody are probably 15 years apart when it comes to energy levels, and Pearl’s been a college basketball head coach for 30 years. Woody’s low E, hadn’t been a head coach for almost a decade, and had never been a college coach before. Their situations are world’s apart.
-
Holy sh**…. Oh dear god.. not a … barbecue!!!
-
Bruce Pearl would be an absolute grand slam hire and anyone saying otherwise is lying to themselves.
-
I want to be Duke/UNC/Uk/Kansas, lol.
-
It’s not money, so I just want IU to hire the best, most proven coach that you can. And if you’re a donor who’s not looking to have to buy out another coach4 years from now, Bruce Pearl makes that a lot more likely than Dusty May.
-
Sounds like we’re starting from scratch next year regardless. Better to do it with a coach who has more than a few years left (and a coach who didn’t put us in this mess in the first place).
-
Imo, he only goes after plan A guys because his talent evaluation abilities are poor and he doesn’t put the time in to identify under the radar guys. He goes after guys top schools are going for because if they’re going for them then they must be good.
